There i« an animal inhabiting our wnrtsrn wilds, to reuiarkaoto for it* sagacity chat we lists thought our young reader* might lm imr rested in « short nc- count, most of tha (acts of which we glean from GvMhnan'i Natural History. This animal, which iuhabita the western prairies, and which is, therefore, often culloil tin Prairie Wolf, closely resomlilot* thn domestic dog of the In dlsiirt iu appearnnee, and is reffiurkuhly active aud intelligent. Hn harks so aa to imitate the common dog very distinctly ; the first two or three notes are not to he distjuffiiishorf from choir of a small tor rinr, except that hu adds to these notes a lengthened screuni, giving a iioculiar wildness to Uirsn sounds. Ills most winnle rial quality is his extraordinary sa gacity, ol which the naturalist Say givos, In th# Journal ol Incog's Expedition, the following anec dote :— “Mi*. (Titian)Pealoconstructed and tried various kinds of traps to tako them, ouo of which wu» u shallow box, supported at one end thn well known kindoftrap-stickcalled 'figure four,’ which clevuied the iVoutof the trap upwards of llireo feet £ buve its slab flooring ; the trap was about six feet ug, and neurly the same in breadth, and plentifully baited with offal. Notwithstanding this arrange ment, a wolf actually burrowed under the flooriug, and pulled down the bait through the crevices in the floor; trnche of different si to were observed about the trap. This procedure would seem to ba the rc suit ore faculty beyond mere instinct. " The trap proving useless, another wits construct •d in u different part of tho country, formed like n large cage, through which tho animals might outer, but not to return. Tills was equally unnuccesslul; tho wolves attempted in vain to get at tbu bait, us tiiny would not enter by the route prepared for them. A large double 'steel trap' Was next tried ; Ibis was profusely baited, and the whole, with the exception of the bait, waa carefully concealed beneath the fall en leaves. This was alio unsuccessful. Trucks of the anticipated victims were ucxldn v observed to be impressed in numbers on the earth uenr the spot, but still tho trap, with its seductive charge, re mained untouched. The bail was then removed f>oin the trap and suspended over it Ironi the branch of a tree ; several places of meat we to also suspend ed in a similar inaniiiior from the trees in the vicin ity. Tho Pillowing morning the bait over the trup alone remained, tfuppoiing that their exquisite sense of entcll warned them of the position of the trail, it was removed aud again covered wills leaves, and the baits being disposed of as before, the leaves to « considerable distance around were burned, aud the trap remaiued perfectly concealed by ashes ; still Hi? halt over thn trap was avoided." It was not nntil a log trap was tired, that on individual or this species was caught. Tins log trap is inudo by raising one log above another at ouo tind by inunns of an upright stick, which rests upon a rounded horizontal trigger on thn lower log. We rouieinbor an instuuce of shrewdness, i what approximating this, iu the case of the inon rat, which, as Dr. Hodman remarks, ami as every one knows, “ is the veriest scoundrel in the brute ereatiou," although he acta solely accurdiug to tho impulses of nature, and is therefore ut>t so bad as scoundrels of a higher order of beings, who know better, and have not this apology to off.)r. Being much annoyed by a throng of uncommonly mischievous and impudent ruts, wo resolved to outgenerul and eutrap them, Knowing their su perlative cunning, ws buried » powerful steel trup iu X mess of bran, alter this material had been allowed to become very familiar to them for sc duyy, during which their trucks were fouud mark every part of its surface. Hut to deprivu them of the advantages if acute scent we took can :*» u.o a spoon in nioviug tho bran, aud in coverini the .rap. Portions of cheese wore then scatterei r:*er the whole surface, The next morning these hud all disappeared, except over that part where the imp lay concealed, and numerous tracks seen on uvery other part of tho bran. Dr. Eights of this city bus furni-iicd the following anecdote of the Prairie Wolf, which cawo under his own observation : A few years siuce, a pair of these interesting ani mals were sent to this city, nnd kept by a friend ol ours during tho winter, in the hay loft attached to his stable. The peculiarly cunning expression of Ihecoouteuance, and restless activity of the eye, immediately attracted the attention of visitors, when for tho flr»t time they beheld them. During thn fore part of the day they remained comparatively quiet, but us the evomog drew to a close they lie '-Hu Mu* ‘I* 1 " 1 ".’.. 1 "- "WWlB-fl'Wg-W Dry Goods, Clothing, fco. _ pib^lTvm^ jt or e . ureal »ac*l4cc AX MAAS 8c HEYMANN S CLOTHING EMPORIUM. iiiJoouatr/, thrt Oi.jr.r.BO* ,.r.,..r.J to olf.r of the largest and best selected stocks uf OIAIT HI NO, and a general assortment of Gen tlemen e FURNISHING GOODS and Fancy •ver°brought to this city, suitable for fall and winter wear, at prices nevtr known or haard of Id t>Ws ouu- 'wo enumerate a fsw leading articles in onr line, to which we invito •peeial attention: Extra Heavy Overroats. Tlie case wbleb has in duced us to pen this article waa that of a young lady of onr acquaintance, who by frequent exposure to the night air, contracted a Cold which settled on ths Lusts before its ravages could be stayod. (This occurred two yoars ago this winter.) Various remedies were used, but with very little effect or benefit. The Cough new worse, with copious expectoration, and the sunken eye, and pale, hollow chook, told nlaiuly that pulmohary- disease was doing its worst on ftor delicate frame. The family physician was consulted, and although he would not admit to the youug lady that she really had ths Consumption, yet he would give no encouragement u to a euro. At this crisis her mother wae persuaded tc ‘ make use of a bottle of Dr^Rogera'a Compound Syrup of Liverwort and Tar, and we aro happy to state she was perfectly cured in less than threo months by this medi cine alone, after oven hope waa destroyed. It is use less to commont ou snob a ease as this, for the aimple truth will reach where polished fiction never can. if any doubt the authenticity of this statement, let them call at this office.—17. ,S.
