Wo give hie own RiOiiinrenila on iho subject, so ns not tu inaUo eny inieieke in a mutter of ho much itupor' tnce: lit tho uiginoB of the celoric ship, and the Ericeimn angfliiH working nt New York, iho lire being applied to one end of the cylinder nausea ait unequal aapanviou of iho Inner, and S rent difficulty in keeping tho piBton-paukiiig ght. The Iosb of limited ujr from this cause, in Iho Ericsson, is nearly twenty per cent. Tire air, aAef it has forced tha piston up, (Hill conliuues to bo boated, ant) its final escape into the outward air, at thirty degrees, is an unnecessary waste of fuel. The arrangement »f tile mans of woven wire forming the ** leganeratnr," causes a loss of power bv the retardation of the air punning through lit. The final healing through cast- iron one und a half inches thick, requires the engine to be run slow in order to get up the nvcnsHory expansion, the maximum speed of the " Eriissotf* engines being only twelve involution* for a stroke of eix feet. These objections are intended to bo obviated bv my improved hot-air engine, and are ex- plained by the drawing of a horizontal, double- acting engine, having ono cylinder and ono air-pump. The improvements about being patented, it is not proper to describe in detail, ut the present time, further than us follows ; My ariangeiuent of tlia “ Uogoncator,” or ** Reactor,” as it should bu called, is effectual in absorbing and giviug out heat with a much less resistance of the air passing through it than in the Ericsson engine. No fire is applied directly to the cylinder, and the bitter's expansion is theiefore equal throughout. Neither is the air increased in temperature after it has performed its work of pushing tho piston to the end of iho cylin der. After the hot air returns through iho “ re actor" it outers a ** condenser," and is robbed of nearly all its remaining heat, which is made available to heat fresh air. A simple method is adopted to keep the piston-packing and tho piston-rod from becoming overheated. These improvements fit this engino for our river boats, ta more power can bo obtained in iho snttto space, greater economy in working, and much less weight is required than *' ~ Ericsson plan.
