The ’scale upon which the map is draw* gives am ple scope for.a faithful delineation of the plan of the town, and to give prominence to those features which distinguish the city of Ogle- tborpe from all others. The old city, tho now, and the prospective, are all displayed with suf ficient of the sdjaceut surroundings to give the stranger a very satisfactory idea of our location. The engraving is well executed, the coloring good, and aa far as wo have been able to examine it, the minute details ure faithfully &ad correctly given. [From the New York Cwsriee A Enquirer, of Saturday.} The Mn VMRtsnh writ New York Hiram Ship . AagiiMtn. The trial trip of the third steam ship I in tho “New York nud Savannah Strom Navigation Company's” lino yesterday, was made tho oc casion ol an excursion, which for the com pletenese and perfection of its arrange ments; judicious selection of guests nod gra tification of tho anticipations of all con cerned, seldom leaves New York. The hour of departure was-to have beon 10 A. M., but in c on sequence of a dense fog upon the waters at that time she did not lenvo her pier until noar 12 M. Tho construction of her machinery beiug iu some points new and pe culiar, hor movement fioin the dock was look ed for with interest by a number ol theoretical and practical engineers who were on board. Owing to Hie delay they had an opportunity of examining the vessel and appointments mi nutely, and nad formod favorable opinions con cerning the whole. It is sometimes tho cose with now machinery, that slight adjustments are necessary after “ steam is up” before start ing ; but it was not so with the Augusta. At the word she glided from hor pjer, nnd conti nued her course as smoothly as if sho had mode many trips before ; and rstumsdin the soon man ncr. We have already published the dinicn sions of this vessel in detail, and consequently will now only state them in general terms. 3he was built by Win. H. Webb, of long-standing celebrity as a ship builder, and is 220 feet in length, 35 J foot broadlh of beam, 22 feet depth of hold, and 1600 tons register. Her model is without reproach. She is what is called 41 very sharp fore and aft,” and so perfect are her lines, that when moving at tho rate of fourteen miles por hour, scarcely any agitation of tho water is di*ccruiblo other than from the action of her wheels. Her engine wan built by Stillman, Allen Ac. Co., of the Novelty Works, which is, aside from ocular demonstration, a sufficient guar- untse tor its being a commendable specimen of a single oscillating engine. Tho cylinder is 85 inches in diainoter and 10 feet stroke, and •bout 1400 horse power. It is peculiar in being a single oscillating engine with the in- tioJuction of the American Puppet valves, and in having its pump worked without the use of the crank shaft. The crank ehaft is dispensed with, by a motion taken from tho top of the piston. By this arrangement of engine 95 p. c. of Ihe power is communicated directly to the crank to which the wheels are affixed, and remaining 5 per cent, bcare upon the lever, which works tho pumps. It is claimed that this arrangement is loss liable to derangement; as compared with other forms of engines, the friction is vastly reduced. It is also stated that while there are thirteen principal parti*', in tho side lever engine, through which its power is transmitted, this engine has but four. In thus reducing the friction end liability to de rangement, lies in the opinion of tbo builders, : ts great value. To these may he added toe fact that it occti- SAVANNAH MORNING NEWS, THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 1853. [Sto the Ditty Morning Nows.] The Form or Spring. IV ALLA MOOUK.
