Editor of Savannah New* : The wharves are again filled with wet goods end materials of vetssls lost on the rsef, sod the sue* liooeer’s bell is hourly culling upon the speculfting community to como together and make bargains. Calicoes by the cart load, de Lains, trunks of sad* dlmg, cares of books, drugs, medicines, ale, portrr, locomotives, railroad iron, heme, butter, all in pro miscuous coufosion are spread out in lots to suit lho wants of all. We saw last week cases of slegent esddlury, kurnosses silver plated and richly trinunod, sold for almost a song. Everything was soaking wet, but all we/a sot ruined. A stranger couiiug to town during these seasons of wrecks would think wo were all in the luuudry business. Every fence, every twig .and bush is covered with wet goods “liuug out to dry,” and they flap about iu the wind, showing stains that soap will not wash oil'. The schooner Sarah, Cant. Moore, from Havana bound to Norfolk and Baltimore with molosaoM, ar rived on the 12th, leaking budly—n survoy was hold upon the vessel and hor discharge recommended. She will be lakeu up on the ship ways of bowuo A Curry to whom she la consigned. The schooner E. G. Willard, Willard, from New Orleans, with a cargo of bacon Ac, bound to Charles ton, 8. C , ran ashore on the Lon# Key Bank, on the night of the 9th. Was boarded by the wreck ers the next rooming, and assistance taken. Vestel bilged the sumo day, aud dumaged THE CARNIVAL AT PARAGUAY. BV OKS. 8. RAYMOND. Among all lho holidays kept at Paraguay—and they are not a few—the season of the Carnival is the most eagerly looked forward to, as she season ol fon and frolic—the most enjoyed of all others while It lasts, and regretted whm over. On the occasiou of my secoud visit to the coun try, arriviug in Assumption some four oi five days before tho beginning ol the festival, we found every body, malo and fomale, old nud young, all on the nui vive preparing for tho approuchlng festivities. Firo-warka, innoka, torchon, and grotesque cos tumes w ere In process of construction; and kb I hud spout several yoais iu Carnival countries, I was supposed to bn well enough acquainted with tho various kinds of sports usual upou such occasions to act as leader of our party (most of whom had never seeu anything of the kind] in the coming throe-days' jubilee. The first day passed ofT rather quietly, but at day light on the second morning the wild revels began with a vengeance. All sorts of hideous looking monsters, dovits, giants, locomotive puncheons, satyrs, ferocious war- chiefs of Homo unhonrd-of snvngo ruco, gaily dressed and superbly-mounted cavaliers, bouutlful sylphs, naiads, and pretty dower-girls, great monstrous upe» aud doukeys, walking on their hiud legs, traversed the streets in masks ; shouting, singing, wlioopiug, and chattering, and pelting each other with egg shells filled with cologne or scented water. Some fired showers of confectionary and sugar bullets among the crowd from enormous spring guns ; hun dred* of fanta»tically-dresMd urchins darted hither and thither iu every direction, carrying huge sy- ringos, with which thoy played firemen upou ladies, cavaliers, or who or whatovor else they got wilhlu range of their unglues. Thus for two hours the revel wont on, while wo, perched upon the roof of Don Jose Alinaxa's man sion, fronting the Plaza de Justice, looked dowu upou the huge throng, uutil several of our party became impatient to mingle in the good-huuiored melee, whereupon we descended from our perch, sallied forth into lho plaza, and set out in search of adventures. Filling ou^ pockets with cologne eggs, wo battled way across tho greut squnro and besieged splendid puluce-liko muiision, tho residence of u I’uruguayan hidulgo, but who or what ho was wo neither know nor cured. It w <s tho Carnivel, and we would call on tho ladies, provided there wore any thore, and we could gel in—of which wo saw little prospect in front, as the door was secured, jalousies all closed, balconies descried, aud the houses, too, wo might have thought, but for the glimpses we got of a dozen pair of great, black, lustrous eyes, peering out through the slats of the closed jalousies at us. Finding the fortress impregnable in front, we passed round to the rear, uml making a scaling- oompauions, wo managed to ladder or two of . .. w __ cliinh the wall of tho court-yard, from whenco clambered upou tho roof ot the kitchen, hauling lip our human ladders after us: and than, removing u few tiles from one corner of the roof, we slid down into the culinary department, from wbenco we emerged into the court-yard, where we wore set upon by a score of dogs of all colors, breeds, and sizes. But our gaueka frocks and leather leggings, donned for the occasion, were dog-proof; and having routed our canine assuilants, mo made a rush at the real entrauco of the mansion, which we found open, mid traversing the groat corridor, we mounted the broad stairs to the second floor, from tho jalou sies of which wo had discovered tho battery of eyes directed at us. As we gaiuod tho landing, we were greeted with a volley of cologne eggs, which came from tbreo doors along the side of the hall, flung open the moment we rained the floor, discovering some ten or twelvo Corn Meal, ft bushel,... A second later, and down from the staira leading out roof came a dozen streams of water, from as many inverted buckets, square upon our bonds, com pletely drenching us to tho akin, while tho pcul of •y laughter from the fair water-carriers above our Leads, and the clapping to of the trap-door through which they escaped to the roof, served to remind u*. that although the fortress was gained, it was not yet won. Separating iu two divisions, one half our party dashed up the stairs to tho roof, while 'he remain der, of wliom 1 was one, rushed in through the three doors from wheuco tho first fire had beeu given, in search of the friendly oneray. Three of us, Captain Faber, Dr. Brent, and my- solf, touk tho front part of the mansion, and after passing two sumptuously-appointed chiinbors with out finding our quarry, we came to h closed door, which was so firmly secured within that it resisted the captain's utmost efforts to open it.
