The Hotel ofthe Invalids la n vnat oatahliah-
ment, luiindoil by Louis (ho XIV., but grcntly
enlarged from time to time, and at the present
time covering, with its numerous courts, six*
teen acres ol ground. We passed a number
ot pieces of heavy artillery, os we approached
the gate of entrance ; and everywhere, at the
gate, and in the court, nnd galleries, some sent*
od on chairs, and some walking ; some with
one arm remaining, nnd others with one leg,
with diversities ol uniform, hut all, apparently,
in good spirits, and chattering excessively,
were tho old associates of my guide—the bro
ken, but indomitable romnants of the wars ol the
Emperor. Too old to fight, and too much
mutilated to labor, they felt ibetnsofven happy
in not being obliged to 1>eg.
The Hotel ofthe IovhIkIo, constructed with
a view to the accommodation oft large number
of soldiers, displays n front of six hundred and
twelve feet. There are four refectories—*or
dining rooms—lor tho occupants, each ono
hundred and fifty foot in length, and eight spa
cious dormitories, besides smaller oues, con
taining fifty bods each. The dome of tho In
valids, winch has a sort of historical celebrity,
i« spacious and lofty, and is seen si a greut
distance. Among thevother accommodations
pertaining to this establishment, it has a libra
ry of 1,500 volumes; consisting chiefly of
works of general literature, jurisprudence, and
military strategy ; and it is here ns might na
turally be expected—that we find deposited
many of tho trophies which the French have
taken from their enemies. In the time of IVa<
iioleon there were three thousand flaga col
lected here—:ho memorials of war and of con
quest, all of which were burnt by the French
themselves on the evening previous to the en
trance ofthe allied armies into Paris, March
31, 1814 ; so certoin is it that war brings with
it its own retribution.
In this building ore the remains of Napoleon
—tho dust and ashes of ths man who was f. .r
many years the idol of France, and tho torror
of Europe. It is not surprising that visitors
should constantly flock to see tho splendid
monument of a man of such wonderful power
end of such strange vicissitudes; at the
age of twenty-eight the conqueror of Italy ; nt
thirty the first Consul of France ; and at thir
ty-five the Emperor of Franco, but in his pur
pose of conquering Europe dnvon back by the
llamas of Moscow, defeated at Waterloo, and
finding death oil the rock of St. Helena.—
The hoof of his war norse trod in the blood of
millions.
As I returned from this place, the sun was
sotting bohind the distant hills. 1 passed
through the mqjestic grove of tho Elysion
Fields. The autumnal leaves, gleaming in
the departing radiance of day, /ell around me.
My heart went back to America. Tho sound
of her rivers wee in my ears. Her vast forests
spread out before me. 1 remembered tho vast
ness, the wildnoss. tho repose of nature, end I
fluid to myself, *• These works which I have
seen in foreign lands—the efforts and tho me
morial of genius—are still the works of men.
Imperfection marks their origin; decay com
pletes their progress. Beauty and deformity,
life and death, are mingled together. Mania
here ; but where is the Makor of Man 7 I sigh
lor my native land. I wish to hear again the
prayers and tho hymns of her cottagers, in-
spired by the blessings arouud them. Hor
rivers are lines ol beauty; her hills are hor
monuments; the mighty* firmament is her ca
thedral ; and Uod—*heard in the sigh of the
winds—seen in the richness of the forest—and
etomal in the reproduction of her wild and va
ried magnificence—God is every where."
J9P* A’n Englishman never dances above
his waist. His feet may cut pigeon wings, or
his legs go into vibrations, but the head and
heart of the man never gels above proso and
buttons. John enters into a cotillon not so
much to enjoy himself as to do penunce. He
labors like a slave at the oar, and throws away
more muscle in a Spanish dunce that he would
make use of to fight a half-doEen Frenchmen.
Bull lacks grace and agility. Ho is no moro
calculated for the bounding movements of a
marine hornpipe, than a hippopotamus is lor
tliroiviug somersets.

(Mo.) Republican, gives a long editorial stating hi*(af
flictions. and that Ho was cured by this remedy. Th#
editor of St. Louis Intelligencer ahK> gives notice of its
wonderful affects ia curing a severe case of ebronto
rheumatism. Tho editor of 6L Louis Organ and Re
veille devotes a long editorial in bohalf of it* wonder
ful effect* in curing hundreds of oases in that city. Tha
oditors or St. Louis Amoriean Banner, Temperance
Battery, and St. Louis Union, have all awarded to it
unpreoedoutod success in oaring this dlseaso. Tho edi
tor of Belleville (111.) Adrooate writes and publlshosit*
magical effects in curing him and many around him.
Tho editors of the Glasgow Times, American Eagle,
and others of the South and West, have given volanta
ry evidence of thoir knowledge of its virtues. The
u "ar ofthe German National Gaaotte, published at
21 Spruoe-street, in the city of New-York, uuder
date of Sept. 9, 1852. give# tie history of two Important
cases of whloh be has personal knowledge. One, tlie
wife of a wealthy merchant, who had for years triad
the springe, and had the treatment of the most eminent
physicians of onr oountry; they oould effect nothing.
She was atflloted with chronic rheumatism in its worst
forme. Ho was instruraontai in Inducing a trlai of this
compound, aud it effected a complete euro. He also
states that, a few weeks slnoo, he bought a bottle and
sent it to a gentleman, a friend of his. who seemed a
victim to this disease: this bottle cured him.
We might add editorials, and tiU.ihi* entire sheet, but
will give a few names of prominent physicians, mer
chants. and others, cured by it.
W. 8. White, M. D., an eminent physician of 6t.
Louis, writes to a brother member ofthe profession, Dr.
Reese, of New York; **I have witnessed the effects of
this compound in severhl cases; and so snoecssful have
been its operations In performing a perfect cure, when
"~ry other remedy had been ineffectual, that I would
hositale to reoommend or prescribe it. I think,
when i/u virtues are ascertained by the profession, it
will supersede over/ other remedy in the treatment of
Rheumatism. It la adapted to every form of She-disoase,
and I know no complication contra-indicating its use. I
hold it to ne the duty of a physician, when convinced of
tho eflioucy of a remedy, and ita superiority over all
others, at least for the sake of humanity to uie 1L’
J. M. Rose. M. D., writes from Centre College. Dan
ville, Ky., ‘'that a young man, a member of tue Col
iege, was so low, that in consultation, he and other pro
fessors had derided that he canid not recover. They
finally oonoludod to try this remedy, and to their great
astonishment one bottle restored him sound ami well,
although he had not walked a step for six months pre
viously; and that, during twenty-five years’ practice,
he had never boforo witnessed such a remarkable cure.’ 1
Professor H. L. Dunham, M. D., near Clndniutl,
Ohio, joins in a oertifieat* for publication withtwoder-
gymeu of the Baptist Church, stating th* caso of a
highly respectable lady who was for eighteen years af
flicted, and had beoome helpless, and that all ether
todies known, as well as the skill of tho mostemi-
t physicians, had felled, and there seemed no hope
of recovery, until they finally obtained this remedy,
-- 1 cured her toundand well.
..LJ.U. Carver, an old resident and highly res

Mr. P. Price, merchant of New Orleans, writes that

and for three years could scarcely turn himself iu bod ;
it had affected his whole system. He tried all remedies
he oould hear of. and all the most celebrated physicians
but found no relief until be obtained this compound,
and it oured him effectually. We night give hundreds
of such cases oured in Now Orleaus and the South.
Levi Hills, merchant at Ottawa, Illinois, writes that

shrunk from his limbs j the most expensive efforts bad
been tried for years, but he had lost all hope of rooove-
