SAVANNAH MORNING NEWS, THURSDAY. MARCH 31. 1853. T1 MM NWS. Tho Krlrimoii. The new ship Ericsson ia a prominent sub* joct of newspaper discussion in Now York at present. The Timet says : A great deal itua been said about the lack of speed which the Ericsson linn shown. In point of fuel, the speed attained has been great* er than was ever promised with fourteen feet cylinders on so large a ship. Hut, iu no case has tha full power of the engines yet been used. They arc built for a pleasure of 13 pounds to lho square inch. Corn. Hands, it will be remembered, in his Report to the Sec retary of the Navy, states that during the voy age to Alexandria the pressure was never al lowed to excood eight pounds. Cnpt. Erics son uindo a similar statement in his letter. The reason why it wns thus limited was sim ply this : The bottoms of the working cylin ders, which it will be remembered are convex in form, were made of wrought iron, because no foundry would undertako to cast them. It was found during tho first trial trip down the Hay, that under anything like/u// pressuro the wrought iron bottoms would prove tuo elastic. In fact, oil that trip, when the pruasuro was ul- lowed to reach nine pounds, one or two of the bottoms yielded from hulfto thrce-qunriors of an inch. Upon t!.e next trio, therefore, tho pres sure- win. still »?«s; and during tho voyage South it was neve* allowed to exvced eight pounds. The e.igines thus exertod only two- thirds of their actual power. The remedy for this is simply to substitute cast iron for the wrought iron bottoms used hitherto. Messrs. Hogg & Dolamuter urn now engaged in casting thorn; in tho courso of i very few weeks, they will he fitted to the cyl inders; and (ho Ericcson will then he sont to England, partly ns a test of her capacities, und partly to give John Hull an opportunity of in specting the next “ Yankee notion" by which her merino supremacy is to he contested. Wo trust, meantime, that the American pub- Dry Goods, Clothing, &o. MJ lie will not considor Caloric wholly extinct, even if steam should continue to he used ex tensively for some months to come. Captain Ericcson has labored very patiently upun this invention for n quarter of a century ; ao that ho is not likely to work himself into any spe cial fever now, merely to oblige thoso who liuvo hitherto bccu in no great hurry to witness his success. A delay of a few weeks, more less, will not seem half as serious a manor to him, as it does to thoso who insist—as do all Americans, according to Charles Matthews— that everything shall be done in about“twenly minutes.
