At the Are! iwaaion of the Thirty-second
Congress juat closed, a resolution was offered,
the rffect of which, if adopted, would have
been to render inoperative the fugitive slave
law. Mr. Chupmnn, whig, of Hartford and
Tollnnd district, Connecticut, sustained the
resolution. Colin M. Ingorsoll, democrat,
from New Haven and Middlesex district, voted
against the resolution. He also on that or
some other oocaaiun at the same season, made
on effective speech in favor of tho compromise
measures, one and all, and against abolition
ism. At the recent election in Connecticut,
both were candidates for another term. The
result is, that Chapman is defeated by l,JdO
majority, and Ingorsoll re-elected bv on equal
maturity : difftrece, 9,400. Ingorsoll si;

The peanllar principle from which the abovo Mill de
rive* iu greatest merit, ia more especially valuable in
it* applioation to the Gang Saw frame. The Kugiue
stand* immediately nndornoath the Hash, to which the
Piston ltod is directly attached. The motion of the
Bash is thus directly controlled by the steam in the
eyUnder, and by the introduction ol this at a particular
point, the luroe of both the up anddownwanl siroke(usu-
ally railing with such jarring effect* ou lbs plumber
blocks and wrist pins,) is entirely arrested, the bash
being thus always suspended os it were on the 8teain,
relieving thereby the journals and wrist, (so liable to
heat In tne usual application) of all hcatiug tendency.
JJy virtue of this principle, practical demonstration
ean be furnished that these mills are capable of an ea
