Peblle Meeting. At a meeting of the citizens of Savannah held yesterday morning at tho Exchange, on motion, his Honor the Mayor was culled to the chair, and C. A. L. Lamah appointed Secretary. The objeol of the meeting waa explained by tbe Chairman, after which Hon. T. A. Marshall ol Mississippi, addressed the citi- tens present in an able and argumentative speech, in which be set forth the importance of the road which he represented as a link in the chain of ruilroads between tho Atlantic and tbe Valle/of the Mississippi. Ou the close of Mr. Marshall's remarks, the following preamble and resolution were offered by Capt. John W. Aepxhaov, second ed by Dr. R. D. Arnold : The citizens of Saraanah are fiilly impressed with tbe great importance to their, and the geuerul iuiorest, of the complution of the line of railroad near this parallel of latitude to the River Mississip- pi. They bulievo that the speedy completion of that hue would scoure an extensiou, in u few yours, as far, at least, ns the western boundary of the 8tnt«i of Texas. They are, therefore, not unwilling to give aid towards this interesting work, when the pe riod shall arrive at which tho people of tlio South generally shall lake the matter in hand, and deter mine, in concert, to provide means to baiid up the •adre Uu# of Railroad from Montgomery, Alabama, to Braudon, in Mississippi But, upon tbe present occasion, they think it would be injudicious tomakc n subscription to the stock of tho Southern Railroad whilst they have no guaranty or distinct assurnnr.o of any provision to nil up the gap in tho Une occur ring in the 8lute of Alabama, which pap would ex clude davuuuali from the Mississippi improvement*. Therefore, Resolved, That whenever the various interests, in the South, shall manifest n determination, in con cert, and by ample provision of funds, to build up the warning link of rend, entire, from Montgomery *® Brandon, this city will co-operate and subscribe. — ui.uuuu, IQII CKJ will cu upeinio aim luuicriur. with iiberal|ty, according to its menus then in hand. Dr. J. P. Screven, with a low reinarka, of fered the following substitute : The ciOneiis of 8avunnali, lu town meeting assem bled, have listened with much pleasure to tho ad dress of tbe Hon. Thomas A. Marshall, President of the Southern Rail Road Company, sud have derived much Instruction from the information he bos im parted concerning the connection of Savannah with the inures* he represents end prospectively wiJi the Great Pacific Road. They ore fully impressed with tbe importance of these connections to their ciiy,| at in view ofihomai magnitude of tho eater- prises Within the vicinity of their own state to which they stand pledged, and of the necessity for large expenditure to improve their harbor nod the river, for whioh purposes tho resources of the city should be husbanded, it would bo imprudent at this timo to embark in remote enterprises, lie it, therefore, Resulted, That they respectfully decline nt pres- •ent to subscribe to the Block of the Southern Rail Road Company. After a few remarks irotn Dr. Arnold in favor of Urn original resolution, and from CoL Jos. W. In consequence of this interview, iheBriga- Mr. Oh! that is another question," said • that, as British By no means," replied my friend. 44 There are not two questions—there ia but one, and it is very simple—How T” The 14 Illinois" and 44 Prometheus" steemers left port on the 20th iuat., the former for Aa- pinwall and the latter for Ban Juan de Nicara gua, with Mails and n very large, number of Passengers for California. You will have observed, that by a new ar rangement iulended to relieve the U. fi>. Mini, gold is assayed aud issued iu bare and ingots, the standard value of which is stamped on each. This change has a direct commercial tendency, which does not seem to hove beeu generally noticed. Hhipments of Specie to England have hith erto been made in U. H. Gold Coin, which, on arriving on the other side, either at the Bunk of England or in private Imtids, has been im mediately consigned to the moiling pot and assayed, at the expense of the chargee made by the metier and annayer. It has then beeu •old to the Bank of England, at a certain rate fixed by Law, for coinage iuto Sovereigns, bssides these charges on the actual amount of gold remitted, the coinage here into Eagles or double or half Eagles, as the case might be, had lo be borne. 1’he new arrangement of the U. S. Mint completely alters these circum stances. The issue of the Gold in Ingots dis penses firstly with tbe cnarge of j per cent made by the U. 8. Mint for Coinage. In oth er words, an Ingot worth 11000—would pro duce in Coin, only |995. The Ingot of thie weight is therefore worth $5 more lo the ship per (that is, $5 in actual metal.) than $1W0 in Gold Eagles. Besides this saving of one halfper cent, the cost of melting and assaying in England is dispensed with, tho ingot b'eing in precisely the position required by the man who sells to the Bank of England ; the U. 8. Slump which mark* its valua, being entirely sufficient for the lequirementaof the operation. It follows, therefore, that if remittances of Spe cie can he made so much cheaper than here tofore, or in other words, if the cost of placing in England Standard Gold in a raw state much diminished, immediately the rates of ex change on England rise beyond the reduced par value of Gold, this metal will be resorted to for remittances, is preference* to Bills, tho rales of Freight and Insurance being the same as they were before. This combination ol circumstances will of course keep down the E rices of Bills on England, while on tbe other and, shipments of the precious melsl will be much more freely resorted to than has hither to been the case. Whether this facility for 44 sending tbe Gold out of the country "—(a con tingency which has frightsued wise heads in a great tunny countries over and over again,) is likely to prove disastrous or otherwise, is it question which must bo reserved for another occasion. 1 have already been nourishing this dry topic loo long for tue patience of your readers. Freeh arrivals are almoet daily takinr place, of articles intended for exhibition in tbe New York Crystal Palace. It is fortunate that (hero is abundant storage room in the city,— else, what would become oC these goods, were to have been exhibited on the 1st May, but which, according to present appearauces, will scarcely find their destination before tho 1st July.—would bo a problem. i'lio Feiitival of St. George of England will bo observed this evening by the British resi dents of this city. The dinnor will, as usual, corno off at the Astor House, sod 1 have no doubt that the largese in favor of the charitable society so creditably maintained by our English friends, will he liberal and abundant.—Few Englishmen can withstand the call for charity to their compatriots in a foreign though friend ly country, when that call {• banked by the cry of “St. George for Merry Euglund." You will have seen by your Euglish files that the Uueen of England has given birth to another son, this being her eighth child. The name had not vet beeu decided on. There are few of the ltoyal Circle who will not miss the presence of the late Duke of Wellington at the christening. He saw their mother and her eight children receive the sacred rite, and the Uuccn of England loved her aged friend and faithful counsellor so tenderly, that she cannot chooso but regret Iris absence an this occasion. Our city was vixited lost eveuing by a severe thunder storm, which however was of but sbprl duration. The cotton market hae been extremely buoyant since my last, and with a good de mand from shippers, prices have been fully maintained. Exchange on England is at 9 a 9J per cant, hut Bankers' rates between 9ja9L have been but irregularly maintained. Nessuno. ho, (the consul,) despised this insolent lan guage, proper only to the corrupted end infa mous lips that uttered it, lie could not but grieve to see tho slave trade flourish with un abated success: and that slaves dsdy land on island. 44 It u not so, Senor Consol, It is not so," answered Canedo. 44 the trade is constantly de creasing ; not so much on account of the vast expense your government ie at in sustaining flouts to repress it, for 1 alone am sufficient to ensure that not a single nugro now finds his way imu Cuba. 44 Then how is it," proceeded the consul, 44 that oniy two days ago twelve hundred negroes were lauded in the Biguapa, at a place called 4 Li Guazitna Y* " 44 It is not possible," replied the General. 44 As your excellency doubts it," said the consul, beckoning tu two cf the negroes who waited at the foot or the stairs, 44 here are two of the Africans landed among the rest." Gen. Canedo alfected to bo overwhelmed with surpriee, and said ho should have to lake to hanging and killing to put a stop to these outrages. Tho consul informed him how many days tho vessel had spent on the voyage; who the owners were, their relative shares and their residences ; the persons to whom the negroes had been sold, aud where they might be found ; not oinittiog lo mention the massacre of 200 en voyage ; and then de manded that a commission should nt once bt numed, who should inuko a summary inquiry, and punteh tho offenders with all the rigor of KEUKU*TH or COTTON. Don J osc Bare, another partner, succeeded in eluding the officers. The examination brought out the atrocity of the affair in Ihe broadest light. Capo directed his course to a Portu* gueso (negro) colony, on tho coast of Caffraria, and finding they Imu no negroes to sell, he de termined to fill bis ship without being at the expense of a purchase. Ho therefore took every possible means to ingratiate himself with the inhabitants, and secure their confi dence, awaiting an opportunity for a coup de main. VVheuthe time struck him as favorable, the whole population wus hidden to a splendid feast on hoard skip, and plied with drugged rum until the great iiioab of thorn were com pletely stupified with their potations. Orders were then signalled to make all sail, and when tue unfortunate wretches recovered their senses, they found themselves out of sight of shore ; and lhc«e of their company, who had beeu more moderate in their cups, already secured in irous. Naturally enough they attempted ihe first thing to release themselves, by rising on their kidnappers. But they possessed no weapons, while the crew was Urge, and armed at all points ; so that notwithstanding repeat ed effort* to liberate themselves, they were uniformly over-mastered. These encounters were murderous. Large numbers were thrown overboard, or cut to pieces with knife and vabra, ao that the loss of life during the trip waa at least two hundred persona. A correspondent of the New York Times, writing from Matenzas. April 2d, gives a high ly interesting account of how they manago to take and keep slaves in Cuba, from which we compile the following facts. It seems that one Don Antonio Copo recently succeeded iu land ing a cargo of blacks At Guazitna. After getting his human freight fairly ashore, Capo presented himself at the entrance of the harbor of Cardenas, with the American colors at Iris mast-head, and signalled for a pilot.— Having procured one, tire vessel wae directed to tho iee-side of the Cayo Piedra, where it was run aground and set fire to. It was burn ing throughout an entire day. And all this was douo with the knowledge end cousent ol tho authorities of Caidenas. Some eleven or twelve hundred negroes were "run in." The original cargo exceeded 1,300. About two hundred penshed in the course of the voyage, iu consequence of at tempts lo release themselves, three several ef forts having been made unsuccessfully. The subject waA at once brought to tire notice of the British Consul, who was informed with re gard to the minutest particulars hy means of a negreas, who was one or the kidnapped, und who had hoeu purchased hy a friend of mine. The girl disclosed, iu secret-session, all that had occuried on the voysge ; end by dint of close inquiry, furnished every detail regarding Ihe names of the partners in the enterprize, the officers of the vessel, and the crew. There ia some like lihood of difficulties arising, from the meeting of.British men-of-wur and American vessels in the seas near Cuba. If tho cruisers are not vigilant, tbe elavera will get by with American colors flying, and if the British make search ou board of American Teasels, it will be re sented, so Mr. Bull hae not su easy a business to perform ae was expected.
