Liverpool Market.—'The Liverpool Cot- tnn Circulars of the 12th iner., say that the sales of cotton (or the two days amounted to 20,000 bales, speculators taking 3,000 and ex* porters 2,000 baies. The demand was fair, and holders firm, with moderate sales to the trade. The quotations are : Fair Orleans, Gjjd ; Mid dling, 5|d ; Fair Upland, C|d ; and Middling ;>jd. The trade in Manchester remained un changed. A Jcsp&tch says that all qualities havo slightly advanced, although the quotations given are the same ae those that ruled at the departure of the Arabia on the 9th instant. The London Money Market.—Consols aro quoted at from lOOJ'dlOO}. Foreign Items.—Queen Victoria is rapidly recovering. The French Funds have improved. Advices from Constantinople, to the 25th tilt., elate that affairs between Russia and Tur key ora unsettled. Prince MenBchikofif Imd demanded on interview with the Sultan, which the latter had declined to grant, as ho refuses to negotiate respecting certain questions until the arrival of the English and French Ambas sadors. It is supposed that Russia desirea to negotiate a secret treaty with Turkey, end if he fails to do so, that the Emperor will take Constantinople by a coup du main. Two Turkish fleets, and a French and English vessel of war, were in the vicinity of Constat)* tinople. Nothing of importance has transpired in Italy or on the Continent of Europe. The insurreution iu China is spreading, and aud creating great consternation iu Pekin. Havre Cotton Market.—The sales of cotton at ftavre for the week ending on the 13th inst., were 7,000 bales, and the imports fo/tbe same period 4G,000 bales. The stock was 74,000 bales. Solomon Swallow wuh a bachelor, and n rusty one, to ; but, nevertheless, he hud made up his mind to one thing, that he was the only man Lying who hud acquired any knowledge of the art of taking care of a wife. 4 All the marriud men aro dolls,' was Solo* moil’s constant asseveration. * There, for in* stance, is my neighbor, Torn Tangible ; his wifo iiiakas a sort of throa*legged si jol of him ; she moves iu one corner, and then in unolher, and sits on him ami wulks on him us if lie was uobody iu the house, while he, poor man, takes it as easy as though it was the most natural thing in the world. Now thut 1 were only Tom Tuugible, I’d first write a series of matrimonial articles, and if Mrs. T. didn’t abide by them, I'd submit her to the wholesome discipline of bread and water and a padlock; and might, perhopB, brighteu her ideas touching her con jugal duties, by Ilia application of a good cow hide. Aud there uguin, ure Evert Easy, Dick Snooks, and u boat more of them in the same condition, but I—I'm the boy tlint will set them all right, il they only follow my example alter I have condescended to endow Home for tunate female with the legal claim to the title of Mrs. Swallow.’ Hrave Solomon Swallow . * VVell, Solomon,' said a neighbor to him one morning, * as you ure always boasting of your skill in inaiiuging a wife, how comes it that you are not married ?’ 4 Why, because I have not perfected my sys tern! You poked your lioud into the noost without making any preparation, and hence, Mrs. hverly makes what alio likes of you. But 1 go to work logically. 1 begin by study ing the erudite works of Ziugrubazo, « On the philosophy of woman’s holding her tongue.” 1 then read several treatises on “the effect of bread and water discipline in making good wives.” Shakspeare’s 44 Taming the Shrew” furnished mo a few excellent practical lessons. Aad I am now generalizing all the systems into one, which shall carry the swoy iu all future generations, and convert the plague of matrimony into u blessing. In the ~ y ear or so,’ added Solomon, * my ‘No 7’ ‘No.’ 4 I’ve a way to make you.’ vliide.’ How ?' 4 Simon diet, locks, chains and 4 Mr. Swallow !’ 4 What V 4 You’re a bruto!' and Mrs. Swallow threw herself back, and looked desperate. Now this wus a climax. Mr. Swullow was called a brute at his own fireside, ami by Ins own wife, which was the worst of all. lie, Sol omon Swallow, the celebrated founder of a system of matrimonial observation, called a brute, and by no less a person than Mrs. Swal low. At first ho wus so astonished at aucli open manifestation of rebellion of his royal course of •* jui du, uuuuu ooioinon, * my “ Rules for the Regulation of a Woman” (1 intend to publish it) will bo completed, and then 1 shall take me u wife.’ And Solomon was as good as his word, for, at the age of thirty-five, feeling himself pre pared to give buttle to any womau iu or out of the land of the Amazons, he got married. At this important period Solomon was as puffy, comfortable-looking a little fellow as you’d New York Cotton market. New York, April 26. By ref-rence to our advertising columns it will be seen that a re Ward of one hundred dollars is otVered for hte apprehension. On Wednesday, 20th inst., Mr. J. J. Walton has been held to boil in the aum of seven hundred dollars to appear at our next Superior Court to answer to a bill of indictment. * Farewell, Lola. This morning, the wayward’ but kind-heart ed Loin Aloiitez, Countess of Landsfeldt, leaves °ur city for San Franqisco, where she intends remaining until the Full, except at interval^' "men she will ‘‘rough it” among the stout miners among the mountains. The lauy whom Solomon hud chosen for his 4 worscr half,’ was Lpparently a lamb-like creature, so that the chances wore very fair that she would not only be a tractable wife, but thut Solomon would require no help from his system to make her so. Now Solomon had the forbearance not to interfere with his ludy’s sayings and doings on the night of the wedding,'nor is it recorded that ho assumed special authority on the next night either; but about six o’clock the next morning, he softly insinuated to his sleeping partner that il wus ti'.je to get up. 4 And,’ he added, * when breakfast is ready, you may call me, but be sure not to burn the toast.’ 4 Brenkfusf and toast!’ said Mrs. Swallow, 4 why, what do you mean 7’ 4 Why, uiy dear—I mean, madam, that I have begun my system.’ 4 And won’t you get up too V 4 Yes, when breakfast is ready and my stock ings aired!’ Mrs. Swallow was about to reply, but ahe checked herself, os she was ashamed to say much to him ou so short an acquaintance; but though in the present instance she did precise ly as she wca bid, she resolved in her heart that it wus tiie lust time she woulJ get up at six iu the morning to prepare breakfast. At eight o’clock, everything being ready, Mrs. Swallow called Mr. Swullow. 4 Breakfast is ready, Mr. Swallow.’ 4 Is the toast made f’ 4 Yes.’ 4 Not burned?’ ‘No.’ 4 Are my stockk;a aired ?’ 4 Yes.’ 4 You’ll do,’ quoth Mr. Swallow, and to breakfuBt he went, having received the services of theblustiiug Mrs. Swallow to assist him in dressing. The breakfast, however, did not turn out to be the thing it hud been cracked up for. The toast wus doue a little too much, and the tea wasn’t done quite enough; the slop-howl wus ut the wroug und of the troy, and there wero several crumbs un the carpet. 4 The servant hasn't been here this morn ing,’ observed Mrs. Swallow. * Servant!’ returned Solomon, ‘ I discharged her yesterday. You dop’t thiyk 1 can afford to keep a servunt ayd a wifo too!’ The lady was ugam posed, and she said no thing, but tho doy wore to its close before she could bring herself to the helief that Mr. Swal low had actually made use of the word 4 ser vant’ and 4 wife’ iu the same sentence. The next morning at six o’clock, Mr. Swal low again iiil'ormed his wife that it wus time to get up, coupling the remarks with tho sugges tion that in the future sho must save hitn the trouble of reminding her of eo necessary a Mr. Swallow, however, benefited nothing by this soft insinuation, for at the moment she either was, or pretended to be, fast locked in the arms of Morpheus. 4 Don’t you hear, Mra. Swallow 7’ quoth Sol omon. But alas! a sight consciousness was the on ly response from Mrs. Swallow. Now this was a ticklish point with Solomon, but he was prepared lor it. “ What says my system on his hood 7” said lie to himsell, musingly. “ It soya that a lazy wife who lies abed in the morning may be very properly re minded of her duty by tho judicious opplica- tiou of a coercion pin. ' And this magnificent idea hud scutcely crossed the threshold of his braiupau, thun he inserted the poiut of a huge pin in the right arm of the sleeper. As might be expected, the intended effect instantly fol lowed the causo, for the astonished Mra. Swallow sprang from the bed as though elie had been thrown from it by an earthquake ! But ales, her ugility was too strikingly muni- lasted, fur sho uut only ullbut annihilated pool Solomon in rolling over him, but she dashed his patent lever (ruin the nuil which suspend ed it to the wall, and broke the dial into a tliounund pieces. 4 What a dreadful dream,’ ejaculated Mrs. Swallow, pressing her left baud on her wound ed arm. ^ 4 What a dreadful reality,’ shouted Mr. Swallow, contemplating the fragile ruins of his demolished timo-piecc. Here wo puss over the interval between this occurrence und the time when tho happy puir iu question were seated at breakfast. . Now, Mrs. Swallow,’ said Solomon, 4 see ing that I can t awaken to call you up iu the morning, or eot burned toast, or drink raw teu, it is lime I should begin to instruct you will, that lie only looked aghast ; hut when he came to himself, ho saw that something mutt be done at once, or the field wus lost for ever. 4 You called mo a brute, Mrs. Swallow.’ 4 I did,Air. Swallow.’ 4 A brute 7' 4 A bruto !’ 4 I’ll go mad and breok tilings, Airs. Swal low.' 4 An you like, cir.’ And Mr. Swallow did go mad, but lie had a method in his madness, for he seized tho cheap est article of delf that wan on tho tuhie (an old plate with a crock in it) and dashed it into _ thousand pieces on the hearth, an if he was in a tremendous passion. 4 How do you like that, Mra. Swallow 7’ * Vastly, Air. Swallow,’ try it again!’ And again he did try if, (for ho had become desperate,) and demolished the cream-jug. ‘Now,’ said the ludy, 4 it is my turn ;’ and jumping up she sent the slop-howl to keep company with its teu-table companions. This was, of course, too much for Solomon: it snapped nsundor the Inst remaining cord of the littlo reason he had left, and he slapped his helpmate—we use the word in its most positive sense—on her right cheek ; but scarce ly hud the echo of the blow melted into silence, ore the indignant dame seized the tea-pot and shivered il into atoms against the heud of the devoted Air. Swallow. Nor was this all, for nm he was rolling heels over head from the efTect of the awful collision, she piled the remainder of the tea-traps until there was scarcely a bone in his body which Imd not echoed to thn shock of cups and anucora, and rounds of but tered toast. Unable to carry ou the war any longer for that duy, Solomon gathered hitrself up as well as he could, and, vowing vengeance ? he stuck his pipe in his mouth, his hands in Ins pockets, and thon commenced whistling a jig to tho tune the old cow died of, looking as if lie could bite a piece ofT the griddle, without set ting his teeth on edge. Ilia good lady, too, being determined to follow the example of her lord and master in other matters beside the delf- breaking, placed another chair hack to back with Solomon’s, and after providing herself with a novel, sat herself down and begun reading away, as if there was no such things as beds to make, or stockings to mend, in oil Christendom. Here this affectionate couple sat for six mor tal hours, each bent upon sitting the other down, and ruminating the while upon their relative positiou. But it must be confessed that Airs. Swallow had the best of the bargain, for independent of Solomon’s mangled head, parboiled neck and shoulders, he saw as clear as mud, that the wutclidial and the crockery must be replaced ; so that the reducing of the first chapter in his voluminous system to prac tice must be attended with an outlay of at engaged in raising the fabric of Amoricnu power. If tho energy of genius rind ambition impels him into political life, ho brings to tho councils of the country a heart burning with haired of England, and a mind fertile in expe dients by which to baffle its intrigues and crip ple its power. In the event of war, the una venged wrongs of centuries would inflame his hostility and multiply his strength. In no aspect of tho case does the Irish exodus bode good to England. 15F* There are three kind of men in the world—the “will’s,” the “ wool's ” and the “cunt's.” The former effect everything, the other oppose every thing, and the latter fail in everything. I “ will ” builds our railroads and steamboats; I “won’t” don't believe in ex periments and nonsenso: uhile 1 “can't” glows weeds for wheat, and commonly ends his days in the slow digestion of e court of bankruptcy. This being the case, I might as well bu hung fur a sheep as a latub, thought he, and with that .he softly rose from his chair, s.ole soltiy from the room, aud turn ed the key upon the gentle Airs. Swallow. The turning of the key made her awuro of Ins intention, when she rushed to the door, but it was too late. 4 Open the door this instant, Mr. Swallow.’ 4 Not unf»l I have kept you here seven dove upon bread and water,’returned the victorious Solomon, as he went ins way rejoicing. But. nlus! how fleetiug is human greatness —in about half an hour he returned to see how matters were going, but scarcely put his eye to the key-hole when he began roaring like a bull,^ for Airs. Swallow had torn every one of kis line liuen blurts (that on his hack ex cepted) into pieces, to make a rope to let her self down from the window ; nor was this nil, for upon furthor examination, he discovered that she had also thrown n variety of chair- cushions, bed linen, &c., into the dirty yard, to muke her descent sale. Oh, chop-fallen Solomon Swallow! The archives of the Swallows arc silent as to the remaining occurrences of this eventful day, but on tile very naxt morniug, about seven o’clock, Air. Swallow popped his head from under the blanket, and said,' Airs. Swal low, dear, isn’t it time to get up?' 4 Yes,' returned the lady, 4 and you moy coll me when you have lit the fire, and put on the kettle.' Poor Solomon! There was no alternative. So he sat about Ilia work with un alacrity which showed that he had the terror of u broken head and demolished body linen run ning strongly in his memory. In short, Solomon was a conquered rrifm. That day he had to prepare breakfast, sweep the room. etc. The next, his assistance was required in the rubbing of the furniture, and the making of beds; and. before tho week was out, he was in itiated into the mystery of washing towels. Degenerate Solomon Swallow! Nay, in after times, when the Swallows began to gath- or about him, it is whispered that his belter half used to employ him at yet more deeply conjugal offices. About five^vears after the celebration of Iris in your duties.' 4 And what are those, Air. Swallow 7’ 4 Be silent, uiadum, if vou please; not to talk, but listen, is one of the most important of them.'- * Proceed, sir.' And Air. Swallow, liking daggers at her for the second interruption, proceeded : nuptials, a friend called to see him. 4 You must go with me to the theatre, Air. Swallow,” said a friend. He shan't,’ said Airs. Swallow. He must,’ said the friend, 'and so must you.’ 4 1 may, but he can’t,’ replied the dame, 4 fur he must stop at home with the children.’ And Airs. Swallow did go to the play, and Solomon^stopped at home. O, hen-pecked Solomou Swallow ! The moral of this authentic tulo is that bachelors’ wives and old maids’ children’ ure always excellent iu theory, but as bad as can be in practice—and that a managed wife is bet ter than no wife at all. Had Solomon only treated his better-half decently iu tho begin ning, things might have gone on smoothly to the end, but as it was he compelled her to be a Tartar in her own defence ; he had to take the consequences. Tbe lrlah Exodus. The Washington Union, commenting on the rapid reduction of the population of Ireland by emigration to the United Slates, says— It would be a strange retribution, indeed, if Ireland were to avenge hor wrongs on Eng land by means of the emigration of her chil dren. Yet it is not an impossible retribution. Already is tho loss of labor beginning to be id deplored in the various branches of in dustry. It is by her hitherto exhaustleso sup ply of pauper labor tint England has been en abled to maintain her commercial aud her po litical ascendency; but this supply is no lon ger inexhaustible. Her very cxistenco depend ed on her ability to undersell all other compe titors, and for that advantage sho was indebted to her abundant supply of cheap labor. The abject subjection of labor to capital is the ba sis if British power. The emigration ol a por tion of the Irish people liberates those who remain from tneir bondage, and enables labor to throw off the oppression which degrades and impoverishes it. Iu Great Britaiu labor strikes tor higheriwuges. 11 Knows its position aud feels its power. The capitalists ate trimmed, and their calculations uf profit are disturbed by visions of a deficient supply of labor. Much ie said in England of the abolition of American slavery, but we hear uothing of the emancipation of British slavery—-the slavery of labor to capital. And why 7 Because England knows that the doy wliicb witneasea tbo emancipation of her laboring population sees tho spell of her power broken—the basis .. overthrown.
