Additional Particular»—Another Steamboat
Disaster—Further California News.
New Orleans, April 24.—Tha Picayune
learns the following further particulars oi the
laful wreck ol the steamer Independence in
the Pacific. There were about four hundred
passengers in all rescued from tho wreck, who
were taken to fSan Francisco. Many of them
suffered groat distress ond were almost roduoud
to a state of starvation. Up to the departure
of the steamer Cortez, it was not ascertained
that of tho passengers on hoard the Indepen
dence, ono hundred and fifty had boon lost,
bourteen of the ciew also supposed to be
drowned, ua nothing was heard of them after
the disaster.
I he steamer Page, running between Sacra
mento and San Fronciaco, burst her boilers in
Sucramento river, by which four persons were
killed and many seriously injured. Tho boat
was partially insured.
1 ho loss by the inundation of Marysville is
very serious, and the suffering of the inhabi
ts* steamer Tennessee,'haretnfiire reported
wrecked, has been abandoned. She was fast
going to pieces.
Nothing of importance in the Legislature be
yond the passage of a bill imposing n tax on
foreign miners. A resolution was offered on
the 25 of March, which passed both houses, to
adjourn sine die on the 15th of April.
Tho passage of the foreign miiiers’ tax bill
was received with great rejoicing by the
native miners. The impression prevails that
that its effect will be to drive many foreigners
from the mines.
The United Slates steamer Unicorn sailed
from Panama on the 8th for Australia with 150
passengers. 'There were but few passengers
at Aspinwali waiting transit to the Statee.
The Alta California says that considering
the enormous stock of must articles on hand,
and the heavy imports known to bo on'the
way, it is not expected prices will reuct for
several mouths to come to a point that will
yield a profit even to shippers.
Flour ims further declined, with sales at $9.
50 per bbl. Sales also on private terms—sup
posed to be at $9.50 to $10 per bbl.
Amoug the passengers lost in tho ateamor
Independence, are : Mrs. Ayres, aud child, of
Georgia; Martha Lackey, of Georgia, and

Pierre Savon tho barber, and Jacquoa Menu-

pipes with Hoste, Baptiste, as their custom
was. To them was related the story of the

his horse ; how he abused Baptiste, aud order

For nearly thirty years, Baptiste Pyrrho-
nien was laudlord of La Belle Esperance, u
pretty little hostel near Fontainbleau. Bap
tiste was a fat man, with a dull eye aud a big
nose. It took three good yards to circum
scribe his huge corpus. Ilia voice was as
deep as a well; aud when it was about to give
words to his thoughts, you might hear it gurg
ling and struggling far down.
Ouebouutilul evening, in a summer not very
long past, while Baptisto was eittiug in his
berceau, smoking his pipe, his attontiou was
attracted by the clatter of hoofs on the high
way. A horseman rode rapidly up, and stop
ped at the door. Baptisto waddled forth at tho
lop of his speed, touched his cap to the tra
veller, and held the bridle while he dismount
ed. Tho stranger descended to terra Jirma iu
n very awkward fashion ; never had Baptiste
seen a man get off his horse so clumsily ; in
deed, had not ho himself held out his hand
with dexterous promptitude, the traveller’s
head would have touched tho grouud before
his icet.
‘Confound you! what are you doing?*
cried the clumsy ono in a rage, as if Buptiste
were tho cause of Ilia tnaladrcste.
* Pardon, monsier, pardou,’ murmured Bap
tiste, with a how, which told the other that,
notwithstanding he had taken a great liberty,
he should be excused.
‘ To the stablo with him!’ cried the travel
ler,. tossiug his hand fowurds his steed, which
appeured to huve been subjected tu severe
exercise. ‘ Rub him down; give him beans
and hay ; and put a bucket of water near him,
ad that he muy drink when he likea. Take
great care of him.*
‘ Bien, Monsieur!!’ And Baptiste handed
the auimal to hia u arc on d’ ecurie aud gave
him instructions with great stato.

Holla! I forgot. l)ff with the bags, and

detuched from the nuddb, and carried into the
bur ol La Belle Esperance, whither tho tra
veller hud slowly proceeded, walking labori
ously aud painfully, as if jaded oy long
riding.
* Monsieur Trictrac! Trictrac—Trictrac—
Trictrac—a remarkably odd name,’ muttered
Baptiste, aa he spelled a card attached to ouc
of the bags.
‘ Odd! What’s the matter with it ? exclaim
ed the traveller, whose sharp ear had caught
the aside. * Come, come; don’t take my
name in vain, or 1 shall be angry I*
‘Pardon, monsieur!’ exclaimed Baptiste os
before, a little flushed at finding himself in col-
lisiou with so mettlesome a gentleman. M.
Trictrac was a very elegantly-hulli young
man, petit and slender, with a profusion of
rich brown hair, eud an effeminate voice. Of
hia features, Baptiste could not see much, lor
he had a lacs handkerchief over hie mouth :
but z pair of bright black eyas, restless and
piercing, seamed to shoot their lightning
glances on ell aud everything el the same

heud mysteriously. • This looks mirhty suh-
piciuus. If tho police pay you a visit all
along of this man, don’t aay I haven't warned
you !
* Bah !* rumbled Buptiste scornfully, though
obviously alarmed ut the idea.
‘ It’s no joke to harbor a criminal—as I
warront this man is, from what you tell me,’
continued Bavon.
‘ May bo he had a hand in the goings-on at
Lyons, conjectured Jacques Menuble.
I bus the trio chatted, as they smoked their
tobacco and sipped their wine. 'The night
advanced. As it grew dark, the lamp was
lighted. 1 he dame and the rest of the house
hold retired to rest. M. Trictac furnished nn
exciting topic for the three cronies; busied in
speculation respecting him, they remained
with Baptiste until long past the usual hour.
When at length they prepared to depart, they
discovered that it was raining heavily, and ao
returned, and recommenced smoking and talk-
ing, resolving to wait till fhe storm wus over.
A vivid flash of lightning eclipsed for a mo
ment tho feeble rays of the lamp ; the thunder
clap that followed aeemed as il it would shat
ter the little hostel. A violent summer-tempest
ensued. The trio, weary and awe-stricken,
ceased their talk, and sat listening in silence
to the hurly-burly of the elements. As the
thunder continued la roll in frequent pauls,
quick and heavy footsteps were heaid over-
i *n^’ 'Trictrac could not sleep, it appeur
ed. Baptiste wondered whether this fierv
guest were rating the weather. At any rate, It
was very unpleasant—enough to make any
one figety and nervous—to beur, amidst thuu-
aer, lightning, wind and rain, the incessant
sounds of looisieps, as of u person pacing
hither and thither agitated and restless.
‘ Hark ” exclaimed Pierre Savon all at once,
"'"wb* r ' W ‘ ,h 11 face dismally pale.
•Linton! Attain nnd again.’ The othera
list.tied attentively, hut heard nothing. -It
has ceased now,’ said Pierre: -but no—

which was repeuted at short intervals, became
more and more distinct, aa it whoever pro
duced it were rapidly approaching.
Apparently, M. Trictrac heard the eojinds
also, for he ceaeed hie agitated promenade,
and opened his window. And what was the
astonishment of the three listeners, when, as if
in response to a sustained note from lho dis
tance, they heard the sound of a horn issuing,
sharp and cleur. from the chamber of the
strange guest! Thoughts of conspiracy, re
volution, robbery, rupine, and everything hor
rible, took possession of the trio ; and each in
voluntarily rose to his feet as the loud notes
siieained from the window of M. Trictrac.
The sound of approaching hoofs, as of several
horses urged tu tho top of their epood, was
f iresently distinguished, end shortly afterwards
bur horsemen stoppod in front of the house.
Almost besido himself with astonishment
and alarm, Baptiste hastily extinguished the
candle, and went to the window. The alurui
had ceased--the clouds were tearing wild
ly away—it grow lighter evey instant.
One of the horsemen, wfiu kept liimaell
somewhat in advance of the rest, doffed bis
cap, and bowed towards M. Trictrac’s window,
at which, uo doubt, that individual had sta
tioned hin°.elf.
You aro come! it is well; and you seo I
here also,’ said M. Trictrac.
Teu thousand thanks? Oh, how shall 1
repay thee ?’ exclaimed the horseman iu a
lone of passionate gratitude. ‘ Did I not
swear that nought should make me break my
word ? and, behold, here I am in spite of thun
der, lightoing, wind, and rain!*

in which the mysterious Trictrac was arrayed
tho day before.
After a rapid embrace betwixt Comte Besu-
jou end the mysterious fair one, he handed
her, with a delighted and gallant air, into the
carriage, took his place by her side, nnd the
whole cortege had driven off before Baptiste
had descended.
4 Diablo!’ cried lie. ‘ Ten francs—not a sou
paid. But there’s lho horse in the stable—
that's something . Baptisto was like a mau
n dream : he could understand nothing.
An hour afterwards, another traveller rode
up with frenzied haste to the door of Ln Bello
Esperance. A tall elderly gentleman dismount-
ed hurriedly Iroin his foaming nnd punting
steed, and strode into tho bar. Ilo appeared
agitated to a degree of desperation.
* Host, a word with you,’ cried ho in a voice
which made Baptisto shake in his shoes.—
* Don’t try to play any tricka with me, or I’ll
shoot you l” aud lie drew a formidable looking
pistol from bis breast. * Thus far,' he contin
ued, * 1 have traced a certain person, who, I
have discovered, came to this houee last eve
ning, and passed the night here. Conduct me
to that person instantly!'
' Mala, monsieur*—
' Como, come, I'm far past besring equivo
cation or oxcuse. Do as Y hid you, or as
surely as 1 am maddened by rags and misery,
I'll blow your brains out!'
* There ia iio one in the house at present.

tiste, with most unwonted velocity of utter-

‘ He—alio—he has left his horse here, nnd
will call for- it, I suppose, by and by—your
excellency had belter wait a while.’
' Left a horse ? *Lot me set it.*
Baptiste huirsed to the stable, followed by
the lurious gentleman.
' My own Carlo!’ exclaimed the latter as he
patted the horse's neck with a nervous and
agitated hand. * Host, I will wait ua you ad
it was not very long before the cortege spo
ken of abovo was descried in the distance re
turning towards the hostel. Baptisto pointed
it out to tho angry gentleman, uud imrratedthe
circumstances under which he had before seen
it. The latter retired into the Liable, expecting
it would stun, aud that the bor ' would bo ta
ken away. It came up, however, and drove
uu without pausing. With an exclamation of
fury, he mounted hia own jaded steed, and rode
in pursuit. Baptiste watched in profound as
tonishment.
The carriages stopped. Tho pursuer pre
sented tho pistol at the head of the Compte do
Bouujois. 'The ladieB screamed. Comte
Beaujois stood up in the carriage, took off'his
hat, and bowed low to him who appeared to
menace hia lifo. It was a moment of deep ex
citement. Tde gentlemen who were with
Beaujois stood up, and a parley ensued be
tween them and tho ono on horseback, accom
panied by abundant jesticulation. Presently
the whole parly turned back, alighted, and en
tered the house of Baptiste. All seemed much
ngitaiod. No sooner was he of the pistol inside
Baptiste's little room, thun Coiute Beaujois
und the lady of Triotrac reminiscence threw
themselves at his foot, imploring forgiveness,
and praying that he would not mar their hap
piness—that he would not frown when Heaven
seemed to smile. The other ltdies and gentle
men, all of whom were young and of distin
guished appearance, aupported the prayer
with much warmth and earnestness. For some
time, it was all in vain. At length, however,
