New Yokk, April 28. * Our cotton market has been less active to day. Sales 1,000 bales. Washington, April 28. The testimony in the Gardiner case is very contradictory. The result is considered doubtful. New Orleans Market. iftw Orleans, April The sales of cottou to-day, mostly nfter the receipt of the Canada’s newt, amount to 3,000 bales. Prices are unchanged, but firm for finer qualities. We quote Strict Middling J0J.— Receipts of cottou to-day 1,800 bales. Exporti 14,000. Slock 238,000. Molasses is declining. Prime is quoted at 20 cents per gallon. Election of Mr. Mlidell. Raton Rouge, April 28. Hon. John Slidell wus to-day elected U. S. Senator to succeed Hon. P. Soule, by a ma jority of thirty-three over Hart—Whig. Fire.—At a quarter past one o'clock this rooming, the alarm of firo was given, caused r by die burning of a wooden kilcheu on Joa- - cliim, near Farm-street. The citizens and firemen were promptly on tho spot, and by their exertions the flames were confined to the budding, which was soon entirely consumed. The property belonged to Mr. E. O’Byknk. Capt. Wood and Crew Kafr. We are gratified to learn from Mr. J. G. Kay, the Clerk of the steamer Gordon, that she passed the Light Ship yesterday at 1 past 2 o'clock, and hsw a boat going alongside the Light Ship with Capt. Wood, crew and pro visions. The steamer die not stop to learn further particulars. Collector Boston also received a letter from the clerk of the steamer to the same effect. A considerable number of citizens of Missouri .and Kentucky, and probably Virginia, will avail themselves of the boon and of the oppor tunity thus unexpectedly afforded for tho in troduction ol another great slave State into the Union. « Mr. Chasa, Mr. Hale, and Mr. Sumner were were ao wholly engrossed by their admiration of the works and triumphs or Mrs. Stowe, that they fluttered the bill establishing the maguifi- cent territory of Wnahington to be passed without the usual recognition of the ordinance of 1768—or the Wiliuot proviso. Barnett, a colored man, has applied for a mandamus, to compel the Trustees of the New York College to admit him to the profession of a physician The affidavits for the plaintiff set forth that Barnett as a Baccalaureate of New York Uni versity • that he studied medicine with eminent physicians in that city, and that lie was regu larly matriculated and admitted to the niedicel •sad surgical cliuiques of the College, and at- I ended one regular course of lectures. Ion, the Washington dorresponddht of the Baltimore Sun, says: Advices have lust been received herd’ of the arrival at New Orleans of Don Ramon Olsnte. one of the 8I00 Tehuantepec Company, and the bearer of the treaty ratified bv the provi sional president of Mexico, Gen. Lombardini, on the Sftih ulr. Major Iturbide had previous ly arrived with a copy of the treaty, which is now before our exoculive government. But Olsnlo brings the ratification. It was apprehended, it teems, that Santa Anna would prevent the deparlutc of any 11 son with tins treaty from the port of Vi Cruz, after liifl arrival there ; but he made attempt of the kind. Tho treaty and ratifica tion were shown him, and he read the same very carefully, but made no remark upon tho subject, so far ns has boon yet known. Bo fur, therefore, he had, sinco his landing, made no demonatralions of hostility against tho United States, or of a determination to prevent the execution of the Sloo contract. Hants Anna’s first thoughts nm effort* will bo directed to raising an army for the security of Ids person and estate aud the maintenance of his power. Tho Congreso is to assemble on tbo 15th of June, and if that body be found us impracticable as it usually is, ho will expel lliem by force, as Cebnilon did the last Con- glees. If lie do not expel them, they will probably expel him. In line, it is stated to he the opinion of those best informed as to the presaut condition of things in Mexico, that •Santa Anna will find himself powerless from the purpose of regenerating Mexico or restor ing public confidence and order. News, of the 20tl» it)st., contains a “ Declara tion of Principles,” by the *‘ New Brunswick Colonial Association,” in which they ssy : That the rccentcommurcial policy of British legislators has been so destructive to Colonial interests, tbat it has become neccssury for the colonists themselves In take prompt aud deci ded measures for the restoration of their trade, and for the preservation ot their rights and pto- perties ; and in the opinion of this committee, the constitutional auu most effectual inode of action will he the election of such mon to the General Assembly of the people as can cor rectly appreciate tho present important crisis in our utfairs, and who have arrived at the con clusion that the time has come for the General Assembly of the province to address the sove reign with the explicit declaration, that unless relief be obtained, separation from the empire and the independence of the North American Colonies will be desirable and inevitable.” 'I'lie address recommends that the members selected as representatives to the General As sembly be pledged to proiuoto an address making known to the Queen, that for the res toration of the prosperity of the colony, for the removal of the causes of 1I10 present growing feelings of discontent, and to ensure a satisfac tory continuance of their connection with the mother country, the adoption of the following measures is required: 1st. Entertainment on Iloard United Slate* Vessels at Manilla. A lute Hong Kong paper contains extracts from a Manilla paper, giving an account of an elegant entertainment to the citizens of Ma nilla, in January Iasi, by Captain Kelly and the officers of the United States ship Plymouth, and Captain Franklin Buchanan, (of Mary land,) and officers of the steam frigate Susque- hannali, in return for .attention and facilities paid to the officers of both ships by the Cover- yor General, Marquis de Urbnnistendo. 'i hero wero present the Limiteiinut General with his lady, daughter and aides-de-camp, the Briga dier Bub Inspector of artillery, the American Consul, the Colonels of tho regiments No. 1 and No. 3, and their Indies, the officers of the latter nut on guaid, and the Coptum of the Halberdiers, Don Francisco dn Urbistoudo, son of the Governor General. Tho account in the Manilla pnper says : “ From the Custom House wharf, the point designed for the embarcation, the invited gueMs proceeded to the frigate Plymouth, which saluted the suite with 15 guns, the obliging of ficers regaling them with an clegnnt lunch.— At half-past twelve the invited proceeded on board the Susquehaunnli, where thoy were re ceived with an equal salute ofartillery, and a brilliant band, whoso sportive untes excited dancing, the more aniinntiug on account of its being improvised. At halt-past two an op- pelitiug,dinner wus served, finishing with danc ing; but even in the meantime the excellent music was kept up, and the polite attentions of the officers of the vessels shortened the mo ments, and ipude tlm time pass nt the table with surprising velocity. Separately, in another cabin, was served with profusion, ices and re freshments, this being the last attention, lor after this the guests took leave, deeply im pressed with the recollection uf the pleasant moments spent, and still inure the politonessof tho American mariners.” Damages for Cruel Treatment of a Sailor.—A seaman named Nelson bus recov ered $400 damages in tho U. S. District Court at Boston, from a captain ot a vessel named Richardson, for cruel treatment, inflicted by the mate, with the consent and knowledge, as thfl court held, ol the captain. It was proven on the trial that he was severely beaten nine times, with the fist and the rope, and also kick ed ; ot one time lie was dragged the whole length of the deck by the hair of the head, and at the same lime whipped with a rope. At night lie was confined in tho store-room among the rubbish, without a bed, and where he could not stand up. At another time he knock ed him down senseless with a belaying pin, and afterwards kicked him. When he recover ed, ho sent him out on the end ol the boom, where he followed him and heat him with u rope for twenty minutes. * Mil. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s chari ty.—There was recontly u family of thirty slaves in Virginia which the owner offered to sell into freedom at n very smull price, and somo benevolent parlies in Philadelphia un dertook to raise the amount by subscription. The train proceeded some twelve miles, when the locomotive and bag gage and axpress cars wero precipitated into the Kaococas creek, in consequence of the drawbridge having been left open. One of the bfoukmeu was shockingly injured. After much difficulty, the mails were recovered, and reached New York dripping wot, at a late hour of the night. The exprees car, contain ing numerous packages and some thirty thou sand doDarn in tnouay, find not been found nt last accounts. A Speck of War. A correspondent of the Baltimore Clipper steles that on the I81I1, a parly ol some ten or fifteen men armed with cannon, muskets and ■words, left Alexandria, Va., in the steamboat Plueuix, and proceeded down the river for the ulleged purpose of breaking up gill-netting on the Potomac. All minerul substances are forbidden in coloring bon-bons, liqueurs, sweotinouts and pusliy, except chalk, ochre and Prussian blue. It is forbidden to place! colored paper around tho bou-bons, aud to 9u|»port them upon meialio wire. Only loaves of gold and eilver can be used in ornamenting confectionary, and all bon-bons must bear ths name of the maker or seller upon tho wrap pers in which they are enclosed. The new regulation about liveries in |Fiauce is, thut no one ceil assume those of tbo Emperor—green, red, und gold—or wear them even when they bolong to a family, without being liable to imprisonment for two yean. Noncupative Wills.—Among the decis ions of the court of appeals, reported iu the New York Eveuiug Poet, is uninteresting case of the captain of a vessel, who, having been suddenly attacked by cholera, orally declared his wishes in reference to the disposition of Jills cslute in the prcscnco ol witnesses. These oral declarations were admitted to probate by the Surrogate and his decision has been sus tained by the Court uf Appeals. 1ST Air. Edwin Forrest coded the sixth week of his engagement at the Broadway Theatre, on Saturday evening, during which time it is estimated the receipts wero $54,000. ^Poppies.—Dr. J. V. C. Binith, of Boston, says that immense crops ofpoppies aro raised in Switzerland, not for opkun, hut for the oil extracted from their seeds. This oil is beauti fully transparent, extensively used in house painting, colorless as water, ond when mixed with white lead leaves a beautiful surfuce that never becomes yellow. Now that linseed oil is rising iu price, and as much of our soil is unfit (or the cultivation of flax, ho advises tho attempt at cultivating the poppy here, which does very well oven ou poor „ sandy soil.— He says too that the oil is quite palatable fur salads. A QrTu tar ike World’* Fair. We had the pleasure of inspecting, yester day, a beautiful quilt, made by Mis* Kelly, «f Burke counlv, and intended by her (or exhibi tion at the World’s Fair in New York. It is of silk, is composed ofover six thousand pieces, the figures in squares and half squares, aud said to contain over seventeen million! uf stitches! It is a beautiful and tasteful speci men uf needle work, aud reflects the highest credit upon the ingenuity aud industry of the fair maker. It will doubtless attract atteuiion at tho Fair, end receive a medal or premium.— Anyuata Home Gazette. The Wheat Crop.—We hear very en couraging nows from the surrounding country respecting the Wneat Crop. More than usual has been sown, and tho prospect now is favor able to an extraordinary yield. It is the opin ion of somo with whom wo have conversed, that ii present prospects are realized, there will be sufficient produced to bread the whole white population.—Griffin Union. A French Cassius.—A wiugulnr sort of fantasy has been lately exnibited by a young Frenchman, named Bellcmar, u native of Rou en. He went voluutaiily to the 1'ariainu au thorities and desired to be placed under arrest. He slated that he had been employed as a clerk in various commercial establishments but was at heart devoted to the enfianchisement of hia country. He hud fought for freedom at the barricades; and had, by a formal docu ment, doomed Napoleon Bonaparte to death, and had sent copies of his decision to the vari ous public Ministers. All this smacked of in sanity ; but the Court saw considerable meth od in his madness, and sentenced the umateur hero to two years’ imprisonment. ifef/ALi ... her of persons will startJb.oriBnd for Cali fornia this spring. New York, April 25.—Tho steamer Inde pendence, which wus destroyed by fire on the Pacific, was insured in offices in this city to tho amount of $45,000, all in small risks. Bho was of500 tons burthen, built for the Bacra- memo trade, and valued at $100,000. cr The New York Mirror says, a gentle man of that city has been appointed Agent of the Panama Railroad Company, at n salary ol $60,000 a year, in addition to which four Insu rance Companies have agreed to pay him $10,- 000 a year, making $40,000; $100,000 being the total amount of aalary peraunum.
