Mrs. Stowe’s Unole Tom-Th* Uip- Nkw York, April 30,1253. In my letter of „tho 2Gth inetaut 1 brielly al luded to a model lecture which had just been delivered in this city, on the subject of woraun's Mrs. Stowe's arrival in England is nnnnunc ed by the Cauadu. It appears that 2200 per sons had, by their united elforts, collected together the munificent auin of one hundred uud thirty pounds which was presented to Mrs. Stowe with a grand flourish of trumpots. l’other (xavazzi still continues lo bout his breast iu public, and to denounce tho Dope and everything l’upal. Thu diinos, however, do not continuo to come in with us much liber ality as before, and tho Padre is resorting to free lectures with tho view of stirring up the natives. My attention has been called to a paragraph in your paper, which states that the Omnibus Proprietors of this city "intend putting up the faro from three conte to six cents." Tho Boot huppena to bo on the other log. The turn has always been six cents, and there is some talk ot its being put dawn to tiiioe. This will bo Olio of the lust throes of an expiring uuisunco. 'I'he railroad cars aro found less noisy, and more roomy, aud more comfortable in every way, and the public demaud u railroad through every principal thoroughfare in the citv. The ricketty, rumbling, tiresome, noisy am) unruly I omnibus has had its day iu New Yurk—and a few years will find ouly tho memory of tho nuisance remaining. It is said that uurnaw Post Master General applying himself earnestly to tho nbusos in our postal system, and it is devoutly to ho hoped that his labors may result in sumo im provement. Firstly, tho Post Offico itself, as i public edifice, is disgraceful to the city, hav- ng once been nu old church, which has been Successively patched, repaired, built upon, aud painted ever till it has come to look like a huge baby house. In the second place, the accommodation for. tho public is so bad that when tho mails uro being delivered the end of each column of persons waiting their turns to bo served with their letters from tho four or five apertures for delivery, extend lar out into tho street, which on wet days is any thing but “greeable. Thirdly, nobody can be sure that i letter mailed to-day for Savannah will arrivo there any time during the next six weeks, if at all—and fourthly it is as impossible to obtain any correct information from the Post Office Clerks on Post Offico business, as it would be to get it from a spirit medium. 1 wished on one occasion to pout a letter for Greece, and desired to learn whethor I would have to pre pay it, and, if so, how much would be demand ed. The clerk at one wiudow did not exactly know but he believed it must be prepaid in the * ira of five cents.—As ho did not exactly know, thought it would be better to apply to some one who did, and I accordingly went to the next window. There the clerk " would not be certain about it," he did not think thero was any necessity to prepay tho letter ; but il prepaid, ho thought it must be twonty-onc cents. At the third and fourth windows I re ceived similarly contradictory answers — so I finally concluded that it would be batter to enclose the letter to a friend in Londoo to be forwarded from England—which 1 did.—Again, there is no city delivery at regular hours throughout the day as there is in London — There, letters posted in any part of the Me tropolis (and thoro are some hundreds of branch offices ull over the city aud on both sides of tho river) are tuken by tho carriers every hour between 6 A. M. and S’!*. M. to the General Post Offico, in omnibuses provided for the purpose. They are assorted aud de livered every hour in every part of London—so that a letter posted before'nine o'clock A. M. at a point five miles Iroin tire General Post Of fice is taken out by a carrier at ten, and is de livered at its address by half past ten at latest. We want some system of this kind here, ami it is to be hoped thut wo shall nut long bo left without it* A very serious disturbance took pluce {none of our most public thoroughfares on Wodnos- day last. It is the custom among the lowor classes here to exhibit their liberty and inde pendence by interfering with the liberty and in dependence of others, and a favorite method of manifesting this spirit is in the obstruction of the several railway tracks, which run througn the principal avenues. On Wednesday last u prucesaion of persons, "out on a strike for higher wages," was proceeding up tho Tenth Avenue, and of course selected tho railway track to walk in. Ou the arrival of tho car (which, within the city, is drawn by Mules) the driver shouted to the men in the proces- RECKIFT8 OF COTTON, 4c., Mat 2. The lectures, notwithstanding their title, are con fined to a dotuil of woman’s wrongs, aud com pline various instances of women being ill hasted by drunken liusbundt—v umen, our asking for money, being treated to a iihilling, from which two ceuts'change wore demanded by the husband, on ascertaining thut the pur chase ouly amounted to ten cents—women not allowed to go away aud visit at o friend's bouse, without penmssiou from their husbands, &c., &c., dec. Mix up such trash at this with a bluck draught, or a draft on tho sym pathies of the audience in favor of tho “ pour Kinvn M aiwi o/m will nlitAin Hmiio iilnn nl itm slave," and you will obtain sotno idea ol the lectures of Miss Btouu. For all tlieso evils, the short haired (but, J imagine, lung eared) female suggests us the ouly practicable reme dy, the extension of tbn suffrage lo wumea '1 his specific is to cure all our social evils, from slavery down to drunken husbauds, end back the othor way. Miss Stouo complains that a law in une of our (States contains the expression " except women, idiots, and ma piucs"—uud she domunda, with a shudder, if it is right to iucludo women in such u classifica tion. But a littlo farther on, she < fulls into precisely tho samo pit herself—lor she says that drunkards are permitted to vote, and, if drunkards, why not women! Bo that eveu Miss Stone is not a female Daniel in her owu peculiar line. lloracoGreeiy, of the Tribune, of course approves of Lucy’s philosophy— for obvious reasons, lie wants purchasers, and every woman's two cents are as good as a man's anv day in the week.
