Dfatiis.—We regret to announce the death of Dr. James B. Gilbert, which took place at but residence in this city yesterday morning. Dr. Gilbert's health for sotno time past bus been failing, and about two months Btnce in company with some friends, ho visited Nassau, N.P., whero his health apparently improved. He returned to this city on Saturday on buartl of the British mail steamship Conway, much reduced and vory feeble, and died yesterday morning. The deceased has resided iu this city fora number of years, and was a native of the State of New tfurk. In connection with the above, we have to record the death of another of the Contcay's passengers brought to this city. Mrs. Ten Eyck, a native of Now York, came to Savan nah some months since with un iuvilid daugh ter. Mrs. Ten Eyck, with her father, ami daughter also went to Nassau, N. P. where they remained ueveral months, and roturued on Saturday last. Mrs. Ten Eyck, arrived here ill with chills and fever, and died at the Pufeuki House yesterday. Ilor remains will be conveyed to Now York. The fScnson. We have a remarkably dry season at pre sent. For several weeks we have not had suf ficient rain to lay the dust in the streets, while the vugitation iu our squares and gardens is nuflering very much from the unseasonable drought. By our exchanges we perceive that we are not peculiar in this respect. There is much want of rain throughout the whole sea board destrict of the State and in various por tions of the interior. In some sections the crops in the ground are suffering, while the planting of cotton has been suspended. Should the presont weather hold, the planting inter ests will bo materially injured. The Sunders- viile Geargeau o! yesterday says : We are still as dry about here as a ‘ powder horn’ and from all sections of the country we hoar the same cry. It is now the third ol May and much of tho cotlon not yet up, the com grows slowly, and looks but indifferently, the earth is baked bard, and crusted over with ‘many days sun,’ our gardens look badly indeed everything is withering for the want of rain. To make up the measure of misfortune and bad luck, we have had cold nights and mornings, and what cotton is up, has taken what the larmers call * sore shins,’ at a con siderable rote. We have heard it stated that frost was seen in the county two luorniugs the past week, it has done no mischief of itself, and perhaps the drought has preserved thi- crops from more oanou* harm in that respect, but die chilliness of the atmosphere is hurtful and injurious. We hope, however, that in the fftrlhar development of the season. mav receive blessings that will outweigh the many odds against which the farmers have been contending, and such as will bring their crops out as buoyant, vivacious, and fresh, as it Spring time and rain had been visited in due season. The Charleston Courier nt yesterday has the following We mentioned yesterday how much the land i*» this vicinity wanted rain. We understand that the planters in the lower section of our « State, in consequence of the excessive dryness of the soil, no rain having fallen there lor the lest month, have been compelled to suspend almost entirely the planting of cotton. The wo observe is made by plant* ay parts of Louisiana and Axisnis* Tha Military Ptfietst on Monday. The battalion parade on Monday was one of (lie most imposing military displays that has taken place inonr oily since the encampment in May 1840. At an early hour in the morn ing the martial tnusic of the bands of the volun teer companies comprising the battalion was heard in the streets which were shortly after enlivened by the brilliant uniforms ef the assembling soldiers. At 10 o’clock the bat talion was formed on the Bay, under the command of Colonel A. R. Lawton, the cavalry occupying the oxtreme right and the De halb Rifles the extreme loft of the column, tho Oglethorpe Infantry, the military guests of the city, having been assigned n place near the centre, on the left of the Re publican Bluet. The battalion was composed of the following companies: 1st. Georgia Hussars, Capt. Lamar. 2d. Chatham Artillery, Capt. Gali.ie. 3d. Republican Bluet, Capt. Anderson. 4th. Oglethorpe Infantry, Capt. Miller. 5th. Savannah Volunteer Guardt» Capt. Screven. Gill. German Volunteert, Capt. Stkegan. 7th. Bheenix Riflemen, Capt. Mills. Silt. De Kalb Riflemen, Capt. Ganaiil. Our city companies all mustered with full ranks, and’the column, which extended Bay from tho lieud of Whitaker to Drayton street, mudo a most imposing appearance, After the formation and review of the Bat talion, the ceremony of the presentation a beautiful banner to the De Kalb Rifle men took placo in Iront of the Custom House. The banner, which is a present from thn wives of the members and other German ladies of the city to the Riflemen, is appropriate and tasteful in design and elegant ly wrought by the Misses Kerwick of thi city. On one sido is embroidered the coat of arms of the State, tho aich of tho temple being studded with thirteen silver stnrs. On the reverse a werath of ouk and laurel encir cles 1). K. IL, the initials of the corps, and the dato of their organization, Nov. 27, 1850. Tho banner is fringed with gold, and the stafT sur mounted by a gilt oagle with extended wings. J hocompuny having advanced to tho front of the Custom-House, wore met at tho steps by Miss Ohtt, Miss 1‘iui.i.iri*, and Miss Stf.in, tho latter of whom presented the banner to private John Screven, of tho Guards, with these words : “Sir—Accept this banner/rom tho Gorman ladies of Savannah. Take it, Sons of Germa- raise it to the breeze on high. Let the - Anthouj Rolin >u drowned ii Oconee riror on Werlneeey. Irom (ho Macon Telegraph ri*M an ntlempl wm made to fire the premise. it. [Wo regrot that the iote hour at which tho copy of the speeches was furnised to us last night by the Goorgian Office, precluded the possibility our giving them to our readers.] Tho presentation ovor, the buttulion moved from tho Bay through Bull street to tho Bark, where a salute in honor of «hu day was fired by tho Chatham Artillery. Returning, the battalion murchod through sumo of the princi pal streets to tho Bay,where it was dismissed. Conspicious in tho Pageant was the hand* some corps from Augusta, the Oglethorpe]In fantry, who nttructed the generul admiration by thoir excellent mulching, tho precision of their evolutions, and general soldierlike bear ing. We consider it no disparagement to our well drili.'d city corps when we award to our Augusta guests the palm for their excellent inarching ur<U u?«talion evolutions. Wo heard the acknowledgment made by men of military experionce, and our own observation convinc ed us that the compliment was not unmerited. Our Suvitiinuh volunteers aro hard to bout, but they wero at home with full ranks,in which were members who hud not drilled since their last anniversary ; and perhaps u sense of trtio hospitality did not allow them to put forth their best exertions. After tha parade, the Augusta company was handsomely entertained by the Chatham Ar tillery, at their hall. The Military Pic-Nic at tho Barracks in the evening was very numerously attended, and was a vory plensant affair, notwithstand ing tho inconvenience of the crowd. Tho at tendance of the ladies ill such numbers, nnd the heartiness with which thoy entered into the spirit of the occasion, was a high compli ment to the military. The DcKa/b Riflemen's Ball, at Armory Hull, was also Humorously attended, and was a well conducted and plea sant party. The dancing at tho Barracks and the llall was kept up to a lute hour. Shortly after one o’clock, the Oglethorpe Infantry UBneinbled ut their quarters, the Mar shall House, preparatory to their departure for Charleston. Fulling iuto line, they wero es corted to tho boat by a considerable body, om'posed of members of tho soveral volunteer corps of the city, under Capt. Anderson, of the Bluet. Before embarking Captain Miller returned tho tlinckB of himself and cops for the hospi tality and kmdnesn v/itli which thoy had been r cceived and entertained by tho military nnd citizens of Savannah. Ho said that thoy would return with the kindest recollections pf those who wore in more than a military sense their brothers. The visit of the Oglethorpe In fantry had not been inado merely as a plea sure excursion, but with a view to promote that social and friendly nequaintahee and in tercourse which all desired should exist among Ge*rgiuns. The military of Augusta aud Sa vannah were arms of the same service—‘citi zens of the same noblo State, and while each had their sepurale interests, and duties to per form to their own sections, all were ulike in terested in whatever concerned the honor and welfare of Georgia. He was gratified to ob serve the prosperity of Savannah—he coagrn. tulated her citizens on the extension of that system of internal improvements which was destined to make her a great and important commercial city, lie concluded his brief marks by extending a cordial invitation to his fellow soldiers of Savannah to visit Augusta, assuring them a kind and hospitable reccp tion. After mutual cheors for the military of Au gusta and Savantiah, the Infantry embarked on the steamer for Charleston, where they wore to remain until this morning, when they take the cars for Augusta. The corps individually and collectively bear will* them tho cordial respect and good wishes of their thousands ofSsvannah fifeuds. Lust Moments of the Vice President. The Southern Republic has received from Mr. F. K. Beck—a kinsman of the Vice Pre sident—a brief account of tho last moments of Mr. King. It says: “* He was quiet and .. signed to the fate which he had seen for some time awaited him. Shortly before six o’ clock on Monday evening, while a few friends were sitting around life bed-side, the only ouc. Hint ho would .How in hi. sick room, lio suddenly remorked ih.t ho wo. dying. Hi. plty.j. ciau come in end examined him. Tho Colonel said to him—* Doctor, I am dying.—l t Beenis as though I shall never get through with it. 1 am dying very hard. Take the pillows from under my head.’ The pillows were according, ly t»N from under his bead; but affording no relief, the Doctor turned him from his back to bis side, wheu be died in a moment. A Whole Family Poisoned.—TheWoon- socket Patriot says, that a French family in Jhat village came vory near being all poisoned to death on Monday, A daughter residing iir Massachusetts, who had come home on a visit, prepared the supper, her mother being unwell In looking for cream of tnrtar to make bread, she found what proved to be n paper ol arsenic which had been carelessly left in the pantry With this deadly ingredient, she mixed the bread, of which the whole family of eight per sons partook at supper. Soon after they were all taken with vomiting, burning at tho stom ach, anil other peculiar distresses attendant upon this uctive poison. By the aid of power ful antidotes they wero all saved. Tho arse' nic which caused the trouble had been obtain ed some time ago for the destruction of ruts, and was very imprudently deposited in the place where it was found by tho unsuspecting daughter. isr a bundled mill girls selected by an American speculator in Glasgow, Hcotland, have sailed from tho Clyde to commcnco u new cotton mill at New York.
