(From tbs Albany Patriot.] Savannah and Albany Railroad Com pany-Charter and Subscription—Sa vannah Georgian —Savannah Repub lican. Our letter, written from Savannah, May 2d, published in last weok’e patriot, seems to have been the cause of eome excitement on the pert ol the Savannah Georgian and the Republican, relative to the direction which will be given In the Savannah and Albany Railroad. In that totter wo eaid— u So far as I can learn, there is a large majority of the sub scribers for stock, and of the citiaens of Savan nah who are determined that this road shall be built, and that in a direct line through Al bany to Mubile end Pensacola. Doth the paper* mentioned think we are mis taken in this opinion, it is possible that we ere mistaken, though our opinion woe formed from couversations with several intelligent bu siness men. A systematic misrepresentation has been practised . by somebody upon the people of Savannah with regard to the direct line from that city to Mobile and Penaacola. They have, ropreaemod Albany as beiug 30 miles off the direct line, wlieu (he map demon strates that Albany is on the direct liue to Mo bile, and not ten miles from the direct liue which must be pursued to Pensacola. They have represented at one time that a line, passing into Florida through Lowndes county, was the direct lias, end at another time, ee suited their purposes, that a line passing into Florida at the junction of the Flint and Uhattohooche rivers, was the direct line to Pensacola ; when the fact is that the one is more than sixty miles, and the other more than forty miles out of the direct line. It is possible, as we have said, that we may be mistaken about the views and determina tion ol the people of Savannah. But if we aro deceived, it must be because they are atill la boring under the deception of wnich we have spoken; for it seems impossible that men should so far disregard their interest$ and pro fessions aa to abandon e cheap and direct liuo ol road to the Gulf for a crooked and more ex pensive line. It is against rcusou and human nature, that men should act thus, unless they have been deceived and made to believe that tne direct line is the crooked liue, aud the crooked line the direct line. Will the Georgian or the Republican call the intention of the people of Savannah to the U. 8. map and the facts to which we have re- furred, or will thev continue to talk ol a route through Middle Florida os the direct line 7 The Georgian aud Republican refer to the intentions of Savannah in milking her sub scriptions. Savannah subscribed half a mil lion of dollars to the Savannah and Albany Railroad Company, with a knowledge of its Charter, fixing Albany on the liue, aod with the constitution of the Company be loro them, declaring that— “ The first object of the company shall bo to construct a first class single track railroad from Savannah, by the cheapest and most di rect route to Albany, on the West bunk of Flint River. * 4 After the completion of the rood to Albany, the next object of tho company shall bo to extend the road a^roa* the Chattahoochee river to Alubama, and lo construct such branch roads as the company may determine.” The ciliaens not only made this susbrerip- lion by an almost unanimous vote, but they refused absolutely, by a direct vote, to sub scribe to the crooked route which was there proposed by Mr. Cuyler and is now advocated by the Georgian and Republican. Tho people of Savunnah acted then for themselves and their own interests, coutrory to the views and advice of the Editor of the Republican, and we hope they will do so again. The subsequent declaratory resolution of Savannah is not uiado a condition of her sub scription and can have no effect upon the or- gantoation or tho charter. And yet this reso lution is (Mixed upon to convict the people of Savannah of deception and fraud as to their real intentions at tho tiiuo they subscribed! Wo still believe lhat they subscribed in good faith to the Savannah and Albany railroad charter and organitation, which was published Reply to Traveller.—Our correspond ent 44 Traveller" asks us why the planters are aud have been sleeping over their best inte rests, and why Savannah and other cities have RECEIPTS OF COTTON, Ac., May 11 Per steamer Planter, from Centrevillsge, 4o.-20 bales 8 I Cotton, 84 bbls Rosin, 10 bble Spirits Turpon- tine, Boxee, Packages, Ao., to Itostoq A Ounby, N A Hardee A Co, llanter A Gummell, Join Nelli,IIO Kins, RAJ Laehllson A Co. King, in favor of the Brunswick road, iu 1839-40. At lhat lime, though the county waa comparatively sparaaly Milled, sume three hundred Ihouund dollars waa subscribed by our plsntere, and Iho first five or ten per cent. paid. The project failed, end they loat their money. Again they sub scribed, though more cautiously, to the Oc- mulgee and Flint road. This also failed, and what waa paid in waa lust. Recently Ilia Brunswick road company lisa been ro-organ- ised with a prospect ol auccras. Agoin our plunters came forward and subsciibed near two hundred Ihouaaud dollars to Iho stock of the new company, conditioned upon the con struction of the road to Albany. In 1847 the Stale granted a liberal and moat valuable charier lor the co.jiltuctiun of a railroad from Savannah lo Albany and across the Chat tahoochee river to Alabama. A company waa provisionally organized under thia charier at Navannah in August last, with the purpnae ul making it a part of a direct line of road from Savannah, to Mobile and Penaacola. But though thia is the shurteat and cheapest route between these important points—though it passes through the centre of thie “garden ol •he South"—though the connections with Mobile will be necessary to connect this wotk with the line, of road which are pushing northward from Mobile sud will be pushing westward even (u the Pacific—yot we Me •oms of the Press and loading tnennf Savan nah—guided by a altuil sighted policy of the fear of the loss of a few bales of cotton to another road—attempting to defeat the whole projeot, or to divert the road from the direct line, to a longer, mure expensive, end Icm profitable route. Under IheM circumstances, though our planters feel a deep interest in ilia subject, they know that tbs city ol Savannah can control the e hole queetion against their interests and the interosu of the stock-holders, and they Itavt tnado eu many efibrin without results that they will wait until the route ie definitely determined. The meeting of atuck- hntders on the25th of May in Savannah, will probably settle this question ; and if the com pany shall determine to construct the road in good faith according to the charter, our plan ter, will again demonstrate by Ihctr eubsetip- tions, which will amount is from a quarter to a half million of dollars, that they are not *• slaaiiinff near thair liitNf ininmai. 11 sleeping over their bast interest.' Suvaiiuali hue been aruuscil to the import ance of her interest iu a direct road to (his section and to the Gulf, by the organitation of the Brunswick company and the commence ment of their road; but we believe that the people ot Savannah, the business men and properly holders, now see their interests in the construction of ihe Savannah and Albany road loo clearly to allow it to be defeated or diverted from its original purpose. The effect of such a road upon - upon Savannah, upon thia section, and upon the whole south ern part of Georgia, can scarcely be imagined. In udditiou to the advantages referred toby our correspondent, and the fact that the road would bi» s good paying stock, it will increase Ihe value of property io Savannah and along the line to au amount uiuch greater than iie entire cost. in the S^VAmiah city patters, and that thsy will 44 spend ibeir money" iu good faith, as thev then agreed to do. The Interests of the stockholders and ihe in terests of Savannah will be better promoted by this direct route than uuv other. The Savan nah Morning News takes an enlarged aud iust view of the subject, in ths following ex tract, which accorda with tho notion of the people of Savannah in November last 44 By making Mobile our Gulf terminus, by almost an air line through Albany, we would intersect the Pensacola and Montgomery Rail road at a point which would make our connec tion with the former city very nearly direct JVe desire a connection with both Mobile and Pensacola. What wo would gain by our con nections on that route we would keep beyond the clianue of competition, while by the lower line, it‘js difficult to tell to what extent our rued would be tributary to Brunswick. 44 What we should aim at now, is the most direct tine to the Gulf. A road once built, leading from Savannah to Mobile, would bo- come the backbone of a new South-western system of roads, and our neighbors would find their way to it with less difficulty than they no«. have in determining in what direction to move. A direct lino of raih^ad resting on Savannah on tho Atlantic, and Mobile at.: 1 Pensacola on the Gulf, will not went for feed- era aa the country withiu the drift of its in- uuence becomes populated end developed." That ie well and truly aaid, and wo truat to the view of a majority of the people of Savau- . The Republican insists that the organiza tion of the company must be choflged so as to divert the route of tho road from Albany. Thia the Republican kno.ws cannot be (tone—the charter fixea the line to Albany—and thia uun- viuces ua that the object of the Republican to to defeat the whole projeot. lallroa4 Matters.
