Thei disgraceful riot reported to have occurred in
Kingston, Jamaica, on the arrival in Unit port of the
steamer UrmjMay from Charleston, is,I believe, only
another evideuce of the effect of Mrs. Stowe's book.
It will bo seen by tho accounts that tho negrnos be*
canto so excited at heariug that slaves were ou
board the steamer, desirous of making their escape,
thet the authorities were entirely powerless iu their
efforts to preserve order. The blacks behaved like
ao many demons, and, to quiet them, the Superin
tendent of Police, accompanied by a Magistrate,
was compelled to make an examination of the vessel,
before the mob would rest satisfied that there were
nor.lavoa on board. 1 can only attribute tbe con
duct of the Captain of the steamer in granting per-
mission for this examination to a benevolent uesire
on his part to savo the city from farther riot, lie
would, however, I think, have acted much more
wisely, had he thrown his steamer under the guns of
the flag ship, and left that vessel to defend British
hospitality. He could have doue this in half an
hour, aud not only would his vessel have :hus been
protected from the outrage of a search, but tho
righta of every niau on board could have been main
tained to the most scrupulous tittle. The conduct
of the respectable Cousul, Colonel liarriioo. woe
just what might have been expected by all who
know that excellent old geutienian ; but, of course,
his exertions were unavailing when even the civil
authorities of tho place appear to have been (routed
with coutetnpt. What the Uruguay went to Kings
ton fur, is, however a prohlom. From Charleston
to Para>, his course evidently lav much farther to
windward, aud if she wauted coal, the island of H(,
Thomas should have beeu her stopping pUee.

Have you read the Message of Governor Young,
to the Legislature of the Mormon Territory * It
will repay the reading. It certainly is verbose, aud
somowhat Oriental iu ill style of trope, bosidcs be*
ing rather Irish in tbe manoor in which synony
mous words are hasped one over another in its sen
tences; nor is it over nice in its grammar. But we
must not look to tho Great Salt Lake for too great
au adherence to the rules of Lindley Murray,
or for finely polished rhetoric iu accordance with
the laws of the schools. Notwithstanding its little
blemishes, scholastically considered, there isa greot
deal in xMr. Young's Massage to admire. It sets
forth ill terras, tho apprising results of the well di
rected effort! of a handful of men living outlrely
among themselves, and dependent eutirely ou their
own unaided resources—end it shows, by Inference,
the amazing amount of intrepid perseverance and
unflagging industry which must exist among tbo
Mormons. Fanatics they nay be, dupes to their
fanaticism, they, in some sort, must be; fools thsy
are not, but living evidences of indomitable Ameri
can genius, industry end strength.
The investigation into tho affairs of the Art Union
is still continued, but there is at length good reasou
to apprehend that this disagreeable business is near
ly terminated. The Public will now look with
some interest to tho report from the investigating
Committee. Moanwhile, it appears that there ere
some sixty thoussud dollars of the fuuds unaccount
ed for, and, generally, the association seems to have
been greatly mismanaged, The abolition of the Art
Uniou can scarcely prove injurious to art or artists
in this State, seeing that the questioo of ert was
mado of little importance iu the arrangements. So
moou as a stock of paintiags from well known end
famous artists was secured, with little or no care os
to the merits of the works nccopted, the Direcdra,
to use u common phrase, " took it easy.” Little or
uo encouragement was held out to young artists, who
had yot a name to win, and the walls were hung with
pictures, abounding in bright colors, but giving, as
a whole, liulo evidence of judgment or taste on the
part of the managers. A very false and empirical
taste was thus imparted to novices, and which ia
now bearing ita fruits, for we have few yoang paint
ers whose works are worth criticism.
A case now Iteiag tried against the Metropolitan
Bank, of this city, excites great interest. This Bank
has, since iu ArsteatnblUbroent, had to withstand the
jealous opposition of tho class known as money
brokers, whose btisinosslt is to discount at modorate
rates, the uotes of Buuks in the iuterior of this State,
aud, at tolerably heavy rates, these of Bunks iu otli*
«r Stutos. Tho Metropoliuu Bank is tbo only one in
the city which takes the notes of all the banking
Companies jn tbe interior, et a merely nominal rale
of discount, und as this proceeding cuts off from the
brokers a great portion of a very remunerative busi
ness, they oppose tho Metropolitan, as the saying is,
tooth aud nail. Iu pursuance of these opposition
tactics, some parlies recently paid into the Bauk,
among other what is called ” uncurrent money,”
homo notes of the Bank of Charleston, payable at the
Hank of the State of New York in this city, aud as
an absurd law prohibits any city Ranks roceiviug the
paper of a baokiug iiutituiion out of the Slate of
New York, which paper ia made payable et soother
bonking House bore, the Metropoliuu has made it
self legally answerable for a breach of the Statute.
Accordingly, no less thou fifty odious have been
brought egaiust the Bank, and aa the tine for each
offence is one thousuud dollars, the pending actions
involve no less a sum than $50,000. The one case
now being tried, will, it is tupposed, decide the fate
of all.
The now stoam yacht, jVbrfk Star, which was to
have sailed for Europe oil Thurrday lost, wont
ashore iu the East Kivor, immediately after leaving
hor dock, and sustained some injuries which will
render considerable delay necessary. This woa a
serious disappointment to tbe numerous company
on board, who of course little dreamed that ir
pleasure excursion was at iu ouuet to receive so
sudden a check. There are inauy rumors afloat in
regnrd to this trip of Mr. Vanderbilt, who, people
aey, is not the mau to go to so much expeuse for
pleasure only. The prevailing belief is, that Mr.
Vanderbilt not only oxpecls to sell bis yacht to tbo
Emperor of Russia, but hopes also, through this
means, to bbtaiu an order for some steam vessels of
war to be built in this country. 8bould hs dispose

17* We rome time einue expressed the opin
ion that Mm. Stowe'a fiction, 41 Uncle Tom's
Cabin" wua not likely to accomplish any real
harm, but that on the contrary, the eacite*
ment which it waa producing in England,
would be very apt to re-act on public aenti-
ment in the free etatea of tbo Union—in other
words, that tho prejudice which the work wee
creating abroad againtt the American name,
would arouse the patriotic eentiment of the
Northern people, who would not join lit the
abolition crusade against their fellow-citizens
of tbe South. The following article which
we take from the Portland (Me.) Argus, with
others of the aame healthy tone, which we
meet in our Northern exchanges, encourage
us to believe that we are not mistaken in our
viewa:
Triumphal Ovr.vlen of Mrs. Htowe.
The papers teom with glowing descriptions of the
(fraud receptions given to this lady in England und

cotland. These recuptions are ulmnvt equal to
those of Kossuth in this country, aud terminate very
much like his—in pecuniary contributions, in
Liverpool a committee of Ladies presented her
£130, which had been collected principally in
pence subacriptions, the greater pgrt coining prob
able from tbe poor. In our currency this amounts
to $G50. The New York Express suggests that she
expend it as follows :
$300 (say) to buy tbs freedom of one slave.
100 to seud him to Liberia.
100 to the Negro Orplinn Asylum hero.
100 to loam one little negro to read and write.
50 to enable him to emigrate.
We think the recommendation of our New York
contemporary will go for uothiug. She has already
made over $50,000 out of Uncle 'Tom, and wo are
of the first appropriation out of this im-
. St for tbs benefit of tbe slave. Befure she
leA for Europe, it is stated that she Was appealed to
iu behalf of a case which should havo commended
Itself to her warmest sympathies, and her aid re
spectfully solicited, ft did touch her sympathies—
and nothing else. She wrote a very earnest and
elcnuetu letier, and (lint wus ail tho upplicunt goi.
We perceive that they have contributed in Glas
gow $5000, which s.aount hns been placed in her
charge fot the benofit of tha cause.
A disiuteresfed iooker-ou might reasonably inquire
wbat has ao suddenly elevated this lady from com
parative obscurity to a European reputation. It
caunot be her authorship. True, she has written e
very clever novel—but Eugene Sue, Alexander Du
mas, Dickens, Bulwer, and a score of others have
infinitely excelled her iu tbe line of fiction.. Neither
do her diitccedq/ita enlitln her to such magnificent,
uud almost nutioual receptions. Bho is a woman
of talent, equal to, hut not surpassing thousands of
others iu the United States. What then is tha
cause f
The aristocracy of the Old World cordially de
test this country. Tho dtwocrafu:principle which
forms the bssii of our republic, is antagouisttesd to
tbeir own oppressive system* of government. One
the other must Anally prevail. It may take a
generation to settle the question ; but settled it
sooner or later will be. They know this, and thay
know too that the strength of the contest is with us,
not with them.
Mrs. Harriet Booclinr Stowe has pandered to tills
hatred. She has presented to the popular mind of
Europe, false and distorted pictures of tbe condi-
tiou of tniugs iu her own country, aud has crossed
the Atlantic to receive tbo thanks of Lords and
Dukes, and Duchesses, for her 1 moral treason.'
Prof. Stowe, this lady’s husbaud, nukes the
speeches for her durincher progress; and he utters
some strange ones. For example, we find him
using the following language in Liverpool:
" We never could believe that slavery in our
land would he a perpetual curse; but we felt and
felt deeply, that there must be a terrible struggle
before wo could be delivored from it, and that there
must be auffariiig and martyrdom in this cause, as
*" «very other great cause ; for eighteen ym

much on the Christian public of Great Britain fur
every expression of feeling from the wise aud good
of this land, with whatever petulance it may ba
met by seine, goes to the heart of the American
people (hear, hoar). You must not judge of tho
American pcopla by tho expressions which have
come across the Atlantic iu reference to this subject.
Nine-tenths of the American people—niue-teulhs
of all the inhabianU of the land, at least—are in
heart and feeling with you and with us on this
great subject—(bear, hear) ;—but there is a tre
mendous pressure brought to bear on all who
are ln favor of emaucipatiou there. Tbe whole
political power, tbe whole money power almost,
the whole ecclesiastical power, Is wielded iu de
fence of slavery, protecting it from all aggression ;
aud it is as much as a man's reputation is worth
to utter a syllable boldly and openly on the otlior
side. Thay eay there are social evils in England.
Undoubtedly there are ; but tbo difference bolweou
the social evils of Englaud and this great evil of
slavery in tbe United Stales is just here. In Eng
land, tbe power of the government and the power
ofChristian svmpathy are all exerted to remove
thoee evils. This is tbe difference. England re
pents and reforms. Amurica refuses to repent and
reform.”
The Professor is somewhat celebrated for bis
logic at home; but we should like much to know
how it happens that, if uine-tentbsof the people of
the Uuited Slates aro with the people of England
ou the subject of slavery, tho whole monied, eccle

" nine-tenths” are of that way of thinking, why is
it” as much as a man's reputation is worth, to

reasoning goes on crutches.
The compliment he gives Eugland at the expense
of his own country, is Arise. Perhaps lie thought
it was but a Just return for the $650 presented to
his lady, and which he was then acknowledging. A
purse of gold aids the perception—or blinds It—

land repents and reform# I” Such language ii falsi
fied by facts that stare one in the fate. It ia mon
strous. fFkat has tho ” power of government'' or
of "Christian svmpathy" yet done for poor, down
trodden Ireland f What for the hundred thousand
starving, houseless, paupers of London t What for
the fifty thousand seamstresses, who are forced to
eke out their precarious subsistence by reluctant
prostitution! fFkat for the broken-backed, Hag
gard, ignorant, prematurely old children of the
murderous factories t JVkat for the men, women
and children of tbe mines, who live week after week
down iu the bowels of the earth, who nevar know
the joys of yotuh. and ara grey haired at twenty-five!
The Professor should bluidi at his fulsome aud falsa
cuinpliiueut lo one of the most corrupt governments
in. He would much better have maiu-
re.™ Jorlcal chareter, had he told them the
square, flat-footed truth: though, had he done so,
tiie $650 would probably have beeu the ooly contri
bution made to iris already independently rich wife.
Fashions ii a “ Fihst ” Hand.—Tin dubious
ia millinery and dress-making present the usual
features. Fingers are very much worn - nearly lo the
hone—skirts aad accounts are etill very long, while
bodies, particularly those whotbink themselves some
bodies, are excessivoly low, with a great deal or
stiffness and a quantity of bone about tbo place where
tbe heart Is likely to come, if there happens to be
any. In tbe evening dress the petticoat is usually
very full, aud the pocket ofteu very empty. The
material of tbe boaout is frequently glace, aud
covered with a transparent tissue of imitation stuff,
which may be seen through easily. Flowers are
not much worn this season in tbe hair, but the
cheeks are got up as usual with artificial roses.—
