Every greet city has its particular nuisance, ulike discreditable to its inhabitants, and which they dread to let tbo foreigner look upon. Such, in Lou don, ie iho ahapeleso deformity known ua tho Na tional Gallery, and such, in Now York, ie Mr. liar- num’e Museum. It is itnpoeaible to imagine any thing in worse tnelo than this abomiuublo mate of cafch-ponny display, nu<l everything connected with its exterior. Occupying a prominent position in I)road way, oppoeito the Astor Houao and St. Paul’s Church, and directly facing tho City Hall in the Park, stands the enormity dolighting in tho high Rounding title of "/wens a non lucendo "J of (lie "American Bluseum." On the walls outside, are stuck up gigautio frames of calico, representing in miserable paint and worse execution, tho scones which are lining enucted inside. At one time there is a young lady with black hair, which she wears in rather a slovenly style, proclpiuiing lieruirfrom a very brown lump of bank, six iuches high, into a remarkably greeu stream, whilo four or five per sonages in antique aud highly tinted vosiments are witnessing the proceeding. This [scone, we oro in formed by large letters underneath, is from the "thrillln* drama of the Willow Copso." At the side ot tins wua lately exhibited a painting repre senting (on the authority of the painter,) Lord By ron with terribly red cheeks, and u party of Greeks leering frightfully on the public. This, It was givou out, was a fac siinilo of n wax work show in the museum. Again, there are pictures showing scenes iu err- tain tompnrauen plays ; these, however, are in se ries all 6ver the building, commencing with tho first glass ami ending at that dreadful point, where the gentleman, having murdered his wife with a bottle said to contain ruin, is exhibited in a state of confirmed lunacy iu prison. The last dodgo of Mr. Ilarnum in this line, is a pAnting outside his mu- •mum, representing a female in rich attire, with u most masculine board. This figure, the bills an nounce, is tho portruit of •• the Bearded Lady—the greatest wonder of the 10th century"—a biographi cal sketch uf whom is also furnished, showing Tier birth iu Switzerland, and the variou* stages through which hor beard lius passed, before urriviug at its present magnitude. Loiters from Cuba state positively that Spain and Santa Anna have agreed upou war with the United States, and that England has guaranteed Cuba to Spain, lipon condi tion that the elavea of Cuba are to be emanci pated. The {Spanish Protectorate.—The New York Jpurftal of Commerce says, it seems to be generally understood at Havana, that Spain has undertaken the 11 protection” of Mexico under tbo government of Santa Anna ; andcer- v tain It is that unusnal military and naval .pre parations are going forward in Cnba, for some purpose or other. . The War Noivs. We publish a dispatch to-day which status that letters from Cuba confidently assarts that an alliance has been arranged between Santa Anna and Spain with a view to making war upon the United States, and, what is still more absurd, that England has guarantied ^puin in the possession of Cubs, on condition that the latter government will follow tho bril liant example sot by the former in the destruc tion of her West ludia.colonies. Ion, the Washington correspondent of tho Baltimore Sun, thus treats tho whole matter. We perfectly accord with the views ot the writer. He says: Private advices from Havana furnish an abundant supply of stirring news for theso dull times. They advise that old Spaiu has ‘taken new Spain under her protection, and it is to unite with Santa Anna in a war against 11 bo Umted Stajos, and that England mean- !nl 18 *° 8 l uaf auiee to Spain the possession ot Cuba, on the condition that the slaves shall be emancipated. 1 ho only facts alledged iu support ot these mauling devolopmenls are that Sauta Anna has received some compli mentary notice from Quean Isabel: that lie has taken into his servico some Spanish of ficers, .and that there are, as usual, some spannib ships of war upon the Cuban station. I have not seen this matter noticed in any (the other Journals in this city, but it is most probably destined to provoko considerable discus sion. Mr. Marcy's circulur instructions to the represen tatives abroad, of the United States, creato a great deal of inirth here. The orders regarding the cos tume to be worn by onr Ministers aro considered absurdly minute, and somewhat attributable to that description of aubbbish pride which apos humility.
