In Grenada the weather wjs favorable fer sugar, but too hot for other •crops. The falling olf in the total crop of su gar in tbo British West Indies would be about 1)2,000 lihds. at llarbadoes ; 10,000 in British Guiana ( 5,000 at Trinidad, and iu Ihe other is land* about the like proportion. Imports and Exports from the United States.— 1 The Now York Journal of Com merce iias compiled, from official sources the imports and exports from tho United States for the fiscal year ending on Friday last. The total Imports amount to $212,945,442. The French and American Ship-RaCE. —The American ship Preeidenl Fillmore, Capt. Pendleton from Bordeaux, arrived at New Orleana on the 25th ult. This is the ahip between which end tlie Frencl} clipper ship Benjamin a race wae started from Bordeaux here. Large bets are pending in Bordenux on the result. The Benjamin had not been reportedconsequently the President Fill more lias won the race. From Turks Island.—Advices from Turks Island to the 20;li inst., represent that, since the commencement of the month, tho weather 'had been uncommonly wet, and tho heavy ■rains had destroyed over 200,000 bushels of ■salt, causing the article to become scarce, and eold at I5o. per bushel. ■■ Publication of the Ban# of Marriage. —Archbishop Ken rick, of Baltimore, has is sued an ad&esi to |he clergy and laity of his diocese, n compliance with the rule 'recently established on the part of the Catho lic Church, requiring the publication of the 'bans of marriage. The rule takes effect on nhe 1st of August. At Williamsburg the storm was very de- etructive. Several houces were blown down and unroofed. The damage in the village is esiimaUiijIl $50,000. Some of the hailstones ^asnred from four to five inches in V to. four inches in thickness, oseoibiunco to a huge cake . Walker, accompanied ‘j‘i John Ross lirowoe, , of Pennsylvania, tbe expect (o leave b of September at the The Storm la New York The New York Herald describing the storm in that oily eaya :— The most peculiar phenomenon was the sud den hurricane, end storm, nut of hail, fur that would be top unmeaning a term to describe it by, but of pieces of ice, which camo clattering down upon the itwifs of the houses like a show er of brickbats. Extraordinary as it uiay ap pear, tbia is the nearest resemblance ibat can bo given lu the noise that tbe storm produced ; but singular enough, this phenomenon was very louai, not extending over thn whole city, for in some parts the fall of hail had become modified into rain, probably having fuelled in Us pnssago to the earth. In order that our readers may not suspect us of exaggeration we have appended two instan ces of what this hail etorui was :— The shipyard of Mr. Tbos. Collyer, at tho Dry Duck, was covered with irregularly shaped pieces of ice, or large clusters of bail- stones. Several of them were measured, out of which teas 01 inches in circumference, another 7 inches, and a third measured 3 inches long and 2 inches thick. The inhabitants of a house in Waverly place were startled by a solid body falling in the front yard, and on proceeding there found a number of pieces of ice, which appeared to have been originally one piece broken by the fall. When together they would irei^h about pounds. Tho garden at tho buck of tlu bouse bad also a large number of pieces of ice scattered over it, and a sky-light at the top ol the bouse was smashed by the hail stones. Tho noise of the falling hail on the Crystal Falaco was tremendous—the dome acting as an immense drum. The Times save, the Lattimr Observstory, near tbe Crystal Palace, withstood the blast nobly. A large number of workmen were e ”gog*d on the top of it when the storm came op, and were 200 feet from tbe bottom when it reached its height. They were quite surprised tn reach the ground in aafety. In tho saloon under Ihe tower tho plaster upon tho ceiling is slightly crucked, and iu one or two places has fallen off; but with this exception Ihe tall structure shows no sign of injury, and atill “lands “ like Atlas uoremovod/' tSn severe a teat, to well sustained, will tend greatly to increase public confidence in the solidity of of this unequalled tower. The Crystal Palace came out of the trial with nearly equal success. The small additional building, how ever, in the process of erection on the North „„„ Last side, between tho Palac-.nnd the long machinery building next the Reservoir was blown down. The iron work had been merely raised, and bad not been braced or any way secured to other parti of the structure, ex cept by ropes. I » * it A Dianetroua Ufrlday A aeries of inelencholyMlisastcrs occurred in New-York and vicinitUon Friday last. About two o'clock in the morning a lire broke out in a bakery in the Second avonue. One of tbe journeymen in the establishment was burned to death; a family fcfjlbe building were compelled to escape by leading from a fourth story window, in the pcrfjrinance of which hazardous feat a woman wps instantly killed. Just as ihesteumor iVno World was about de parting fur Albany, at 7 o’clock, one of her boiler fluea collapsed, causing (lie death of six persons, aud dreadfully scalding two others. In the afternoon a hail storm, accouipunied by ligbtuing and a violent wind, passed over the upper part of the city, during wlpch a new three-story frame dwelling, in process of con struction, in Forty-third stroet, near the Crys tal Palace, was blown down, burying eight or ten workman amid the ruins, three of whom wore taken out lifeless. Seven othors were seriously wounded. To conclude, a man lost his life by the fall of another building in For ty-third street, near the North river, a man was struck dead by a flash of lightning, and a child of Mr. John Oberhuber was scalded to death making a total of fourteen persons killed and as many others badly injured. Many buildings were greatly damaged, and a large number of persons injured by the aturm in Williamsburg. See tho reports. A telegraphic dispatch from Northumber land, Pa., states that the harvests and fruit orops in that vicinity were greatly damaged by the hail storm of Friday aftcraoou. Many of the husbandmen, it wns reported, would lose their eutire harvests. The lumps of hail there, as in Now-York, wero of extraordinary size, aud thousands of windows were brofteu. Augusta, 2»th Juur, 1853. UtntlemtH :—l Uuvn received your coniniunlea- tfou of the Slid ln*t., informing me that “ a Coo- ventlou of the Cunaervative men of Georgia, ae* aemblod in Millcdgeville on that day, had aelccted me aa their canuidatn for Governor, iu tbo ap- proachiag canvass," and foquostiog toy Acceptance of the nomination. Uowerer reluctant I may have been that position, the unanimity of thulr selection and my own entire sympathy with the spliit of their further deliberations, forbid even momentary hesi tation to acquiesce iu their wishes. 1 have read, with deep iiuirest, the published pro- cecdiUfa «Tthat body, and aiu gratified t„ porceivo that their position has been Ukcu with direct refer ence to presunt, rather than to past issues, aud thni they have spoken ia a spirit of fealiy to Country rather than to party. than to party. • *. n ou I complex system of Government, -- «ur rights of the (Rates and the Union of the States, u are paramount interests, and their preservation re quire. perpomal vigilance. Our forefathurs in habiting distinct colonies, by o united struggle achieved their independence; but tim glorious consummation was, the investiture of each colony with the attributes of aopuralo Stole sovereignty. CotnmeoHirate with their valor wus the wisdom which promptly discerned that tbe best safe guard, the surest guaranty, to each Bute of her newly uc quired freedom and sovereignty, was the Union of all the Mutes, This union, to be effectual, must be invested with cerlaiu governmental functions. Ifeuce ihe delegation, by the 8laiae, of some ol their political powers, with tho express reservation of those not delegated. Fidelity to tbe distribution thus mude, ts one of the highest duties of all Aineri can patriots. So far from being inconsistent with, or antagonistic to each other, the sovereignty of (he Stutes, and tho Uulou of th« States are mutual supports, and component parts of n structure, which time is fust consecrating as tho renli»ation of inau's grandest political conception. In theory, their har mony is perfect; in pruclico, their sermtug coull.ct is the result of corrupt or desperate statesmauohip. Fanatics, to promote particnlsr ends, and Consofi- datioiiiiu, to subvert a Constitution they never ap proved, will often seek to steal away fVoirt the States their reserved rights, and gradually build up an all- controlling central power. It is tho uolilc aud responsible mission of conservative citizens, calmly, yet vigilautly watching the progress ol events, to thwart Ihe iuaiduous machinations of the former, and crush the precipitate uprisings of the latter. In fulfillment of this mission, Georgia laid beforo the country tho exposition and ■sac tions adopted by the Convontiun of December, wnwHint. 1850; them a sincere and nearly rejoice in their reafllrinsuco approval thsn, will The sympathy expressed by the convention fbr the oppressed of other climes is hut a pulsation of the great American heart. Innovation (misnamed progress) ia doiug much to lure us from the paths of peace, wherein the good und the wise of other days fed the young Republic ou to prosperity and to fume ; but no one of her oy departurns is fraught with more unmitigated Gigantic Scheme.—Tho connection be tween Now-York and Liverpool—by railroad to the extreme Northeastern point of Nova Scotia—thence by Hearn to Galway, being only 2,000 miles of ocean navigation—and thence by railroad to Dublin, and across the channel to Liverpool, it is said, is not uulikely to bo accomplished. Tbe New-York Mirror states that some of the aiirawdest capitalists of Wall -street^ have taken hold of the matter in earnest at this end of the route, and are pushing the work vigorously forward to com pletion, while two ui the heaviest Loodou houses have already contracted for the build ing of steamers to form the main part of thia connection. The road across Ireland, it is said, will probably be finished wilhiu (he year. Effects of the Drought.—The drought is said to be pitying sad havoc with the crops in North Carolina and Virginia. Tbe Peters burg (Va.) Democrat says the vegetation ia drying up. The corn in the fields begins to twist and present an aguelsh appearance, and from the tobacco growing regions the news is that hut half u crop will bo made. iy Ninety officers in the New York Cus tom House received notices of dischcrgn Thurs day lost. Rise In Prices In England. In the last number of Wilmer 6c Smith's European Times, it is stated that the pre vailing conviction is that, but for the state of politica in the east of Europe, they should now have a higher range of prices in cotton, yarns, and goods,; and that, if a peaceful settlement should bo speedily effected, a rise must ensue. The paper adds: “It is now certain that the operatives in thia district will succeed, both in obtaining some advance of wages, ami effecting a gen eral restriction of the hours of labor to six o'clock in the evening; and this must tend to higher prices for tbe produce of our mills, though, es to the raw material, its operation will be in tho contrary direction. At the ter mination ol the week's notice, all tho mills ut Stockport, that were in the Employers' Asso ciation, ceased operation aud are uow closed. Eight or ten employers, mostly small ones, who were not iu the union, have paid tho re quired advance of ten per cent, til this town some large spinners have effected a compro mise. At Preston the maulers are under no tice. In fact the movement is in aulive pro gress in all directions." We gather from the address, remarks the Baltimore Sun, that the the in the prico of labor U lbs most important, us it it, doubtless, the most permanent part of the news. Higher wages, accompanied by shorter hours of labor, must affect prices.
