When this occurs., every member of each troop sounds n held roar of defiance opposite parties ; and when ouo roan, all uolhcr, and each seem* to vie with bis comrades in the Intensity and power of his voice. The power and grandeur of thoee noMurunl forest concerts is inconceivably atriklng and pleasing to the hunter’* ear. The effect is gu-atly enhanced when tho hear* or happens to be situated in tho depths of the forest at the dead hour of midnight, unaccompanied by any attendant, ond ensconced within twenty yard* of the fountain which the surrounding troop of lions are approaching. Such has been my situation many scores of times ; and though I am allowed to have n tolerably good taste for music, I consider the catches which 1 am regaled with, aa the sweetest and most natural I over heard. As a genoral rule, lions roar during the night ; their sighing moans commencing us the shade* of evening envelope the forest, and continuing at In tervals during the night, lu distant and secluded regions, 1 havo constantly heard them roariug loud ly as late us 0 or 10 o'clock on a bright, sunny morn- ing. lo hazy and rainy weather, they arc to lie heurd at every hour iu the day, hut their roar Is snhdued. It often bnppens that when iwo strange male lions meet at a fountain a terrific combat en sues, which not unfreqnenlly end* In the death of one of them. The habits of the lion are strictly noctnrnal; during the day he He* concenled beneath the shade of some low bushy tree or wide spreading tiiish, within the level forest, or on tho mountain aide. Ho is also partial to lofty reeds or fields of lung, rank yellow grass, occurring ill lowly valloy*. When ho is successful in his eaten, nud liussccutod his prey, lie does not roar much thiit night, only ut tering occasionally a few low moans ; that is, pro vided no intruders approach him, otherwise the ease would bo very different. I remarked a fact connected with the lion s hour of drinking peculiar to themselves; they seemed uuwillinr lo visit the fountain* with good moon light. What would we not often give to possess, in early life, the knowledge wo obtain in after yoare ! And what days and nights of anguish we might not have been spared, if the knowledge was timely possessed. It is melancholy aud startling to behold tuo sickness and suffering endured by many a wife for many years, from causes simple and controllable, easily remedied—or better still.-not intnrred, if every wife and mother possessed tbe information oontalnou in a little volume, (within the reach of all) which would sparo to herself years cf misery, aud* to hor husbaud tho constant toil and anxiety of mind, necessarily devolving upon him from siokuess of tho wile, without giving him the op portunity of acquiring that competence which his exer tions are entitled, aud tho possession of whtoh would so- curo the happiness of himself, wlfs^andchildren.
