The President and suite Were placed in car

place.
The President responded to the enthusi
astic welcome given him in a brief and happy
speech.
The boat with the Philadelphia committee
of reception reached Wilmington shortly after
twelve o'clock, and inarched in procession up
Market-street. A portion of the committee
partook of a collation at the Indian (iueen,
and then returned to the boat, followed by the
President and suite. The embarkation took
place amid the firing of cannon and the hurras
ot the multitude. After the boat reached Mar
cus Hook the Mayor of Wilmington handed
over his guests to the Philadelphia committee,
with a few appropriate remarks. Tho Presi
dent was received by the Hon. George M.
Halloa in a beautiful address, in which he
highly approved of the countenance shown by
the President to the industry of the gountry
in atjending tho opening of the Crystal

"During the few moments that we have been
upon the storied Dataware, with the shores oi
Pennsylvania on the one hand and Now Jer
sey oil the other, is it not with you bb it is
with me, impossible to bring your minds to
dwell on the present and the hopos of the fu
ture ? My thoughts are involuntarily turned
hack upon that great and noble past in which
your State and your citizens bore so con
spicuous n part. I do not suppose there are
twenty men present who have not since we
came on this boat, recollected that in 1777,
perhaps about <>0 miles above, the most re
markable movement of the whole revolution
occurred, in n moment of such darkness, when
the clouds closed around our fathers, and that
army crossed tho Delaware in winter on a
march, leaving their blood upon every foot-
tvick ol the way, and changed the future as
pect of our expectations.
"AVheti, upon nil these things, 1 dwell nt
jhis'tnoment with nn unusual degree of feeling,
I remember the cherished memories of the
Revolution, the sacrifices which were made for
our liberties ; the privations and toils and trials,
sir, which purchased that glorious Union of
which you have spoken, will make it dear to
us all ns long as we may live. [Applause.]
And, sir, we hope to transmit to our children
not the mere belief but the conviction, tliut
however great nny Stain in this Union may be.
it is nothing out of this Union. (Cheers.)
Every ivonl I nny, Mr. Dallas, is a knife in my
lungs. 1 thank you heartily, and I Teal a de
gree of pride and gratification in seeing Mr.
Rush, Mr. Ingersoll, and yourself, and these
S ontlemen who have contributed so much to
ic honor and fame of your country. Much
more than it will be in my power to express,
I thank the city of Philadelphia for tho recep
tion wltich-she proposes to givo me, and thank
her especially for tho wav and through tho
mnn she proposes to introduce the.”
The company then sot down to on entertain
ment spreud at Jones’ Excliunge Hotel, utid
spent an hour pleasantly in partaking of the
viands.
Sulutes wore fired as the boat passed Ches
ter, Fort Miffiin, Gloucester, Kaighn’s Point
and Camden. Tho boat took tho Jersey
Channel on the passage up, going close to
the Jersey shore, and turning opposite to Ken
sington, passed close to thb city front. Every
wharf and vessel was crowded with a mass of
pooplo, and the shipping wan gaily decorated,
with flags. Tho United Staten steamer Ban
Jacinto and receiving ship Union were deco
rated with flags from the deck to the mast-
‘ ill*
esident landed in Philadelphia
nunctuall^Sf’liMir o’clock, and was received
at the nuvy-yeHl a large 1
number of iiftvoI officers in full uniform. On
landing, • salute wan fired from the Battery,
and the marines drawn up with presented
arms.
A procession* was then formed, and the
President, supported by Com. Reed marched
up theyard, headed by the band. The President
tutired to the Conimodoro’s office until the
military escort was ready, when he mounted
a horse and passed out ol the gstos. The City
Troop formed a guard of honor, and after a
review tho President took position in the
centro of the troop, and the procession took
up its Hue of march. Throughout the whole
route the President was received with cheors,
waving of hatikercliiufs, &c.
On tho procession reaching Independence
flail the Presidenf wns officially welcomed
to tho city by Mayor Gilpin, in n brief but ap
propriate address. The President rose and
was received with renewed enthusiasm, and
responded as follows:
“ Mr. Mayor and citizens of Philadelphia :
It grieves me that I am physically so unable
-to respond to this most heartv and touching
Wellcome. Sir, my heart is full of gratitude
to all this people who have placed you in
the position which you occupy. 1 did think
that 1 had tried in my duy to do some little for
my country, hut such a day ns this makes a
man’s heart overrun with gratitude to a peo
ple like the inhabitants of Philadelphia.
" 1 have been much surprised—aye, sir,
filled with the profoundest awe—at the man
ner in which you have roceived mo. Phila
delphia is a city of some mark. If your moun
tains and valleys did not teem with the el
ements of comfort to your population; if your
citizens, in all time had not been foremost
whenever the country has wanted their aid;
if your institutions of learning were not among
your proudest monuments, the single fact to
which you adverted, sir, that from here was
proclaimed the Declaration of Independence,
would put Pennsylvania and Philadelphia on
a pre-eminence which, in the Providence of
God, no other state or city can ever enjoy.—
[Applause.]
" Sir, I feel as you do, that wo must bow.—
We con hardly do anything but bow before
these recollections and associations. 1 feel
how inadequate is language, sir, and you also
feel it when you come to speak of tlmt period.
Language don’t reach it, air. Our hearts
honor it in all depths, power and fullness, 1
hope. Those men, sir, of whom you nave
spoken, who planted hero tho institutions of a
froe government, let us remember, were no
holiday patriots, they were no scheming phil-
unthropiats—they were no visionary states
men. They deliberated here amid difficulties
that aurrouuded them—they meditated amid
the clamors of arms as though environed by
peace und absolute security, and they solved
the great problem which was a terror to des
pots and an inspiration to patriots, us though
the issue did not involve the question of their
necks.
" Sir, here stood—(and as I say it, how they
come before us,)—here stood Thos. Jefferson,
and Franklin, and Roger Sherman, and also
this is the first time 1 have been
itere, thfr very room stood the dauntless
Johu IiancAck, as he received from these men
