Several gentlemen expressed their horror of
tho butchery around them.
Mr. Joseph Louder stated that the contain

when they started that they were a half an

All this will have to change. The present state
of things cannot last. A government may linger
oa, utterly unpopular for a while; but the insolent
defiance of public opinion, which is the grand cha
racteristic of our prescut executive, carries within
itself the seeds of its own destruction, and tbe
destruction, too, ef the vile system which could
have organized it. A change must como, and wo
call upon the Legislature of Victoria seriously to
beware that it cotne peacefully. We want no out
break. We bate bloodshed, whether the single
murder of the gallows, or the wholesale murders
of the melee; but we cannot always continue a race
of slaves, and tho most abject soul amongst us may
rest assured that we shall not. . # . .
Wo write thus principally for tbe satisfaction of
those mealy-mouthed politicians who cannot bear to
speak abovo their breath: for thoso timid totterers
who look upon every bold stride in the march of
freedom ns a social revolution—a shaking of the
very fabric of socioty; and who tremble at a

uext thing will be tbe demand of an infuriated tnui

our repose has oever been haunted by such dreams.
With aome little experience of the miud and dispo
sition of onr countrymen, we have the most unfal
tering rolianco on the love of order eenso of jus
tice, deforenco to the law, fair doaling, and general
intelligence) of tho great masses of a British people.
When timid twaddlers, thdfe, have bored us with
imaginary dangers, wo bave already put down their
hallucinations to the unhappy preiudicea in which
they have beeu reared; to their wish to bolster up
some Mfeuiiy which was personally profitable to
themselves; or to tbe want of that experience in
the organization of Uio English miud which would
have enabled them to chase such spectral illusions
from their own. „ ■

to-morrow, from the Lieutenant-Governor down to
