What the FlUIbnstorn Pnrty think of tho
plan of Purchasing Cuba.
Tho organ of the Cuban patriots iu New York, tho
Fillibuste.ro, thus discusses the proposed plan of
purchabing tho Island from tho Spanish Govern
ment :—
0 are alroady tired of heuring tho quostion of
Cuba treated by uu American press iu a sense so
opposite to its true character. Iu tho discussions
on tills subject it i» entirely forgotten tlmt the Cu
ban.’ aro constantly toiling to attuin tacir indepen
dence, fur which they have fought, shed their blood,
uud perished ou the scutfold, uuti for which many of
them snfler to-day expatriation, forced exile, and
the penalties of a prison, solely on accouut of their
ideas of liborty, or for their complete disefraction
to tho Spanish government. Aui' not only tho pro>s
but some individuals of the government of this
country, havo*,.okcu, uud do spevk, very Leely,
not of lending aid to the revolutionist* «>f Cuba iu
their struggle far independence, but of nvnilin?
iheinse!v3s of tho cute of inaubort’iuUion and ui*-

government, t<> acquire tlu> powessiuu of Cuba by
a pacific negotiation, in whiehpolitioaltradurs Lave

innv render treaties pou'blc. and mny attuu: the
und proposed, without disturbing the pence or com-
promising the good relations which ut present rxi»t
between t.'.o two nations.
Such is the cpiuion of semo men in this country—
nor does it surprise us vory much, boenuso they a.e
1101 Cubans, and do not fcai iu tbeir hoart the holy
lovo for the country which is n ’t their*—the purr
uud sublime love which aspires only to tho bouor,
the giory and the greatness uf the soil iu which it bus
f. st seen tho light. We do not exact those senti-
incuts from the American.: t»at would be .•sking
from m turo what she cannot produce. Out those
meu of whom we speak have Oftiiiug mure than
'heir ovt.< profit in view, and, therefore, havo not
fiiied their attention on the fact whether that intor-
e*t, if it su.coodi tl, might bring with it di^ugreeublu
difficulties for the future. Wo will explniu our
selves.
A great majority of tho Cubans desire indepen
dence of oppressive Spaiu which tyraunizc* over
them without pity or consideration of any kind.
Tout majority of Cubans, through profi und convic
tions, based ou experience, through an iuieM*t fu-
voruble to the progress of thill country, and fiiitd'y
through the spirit of self-preservation, eagerly dcsiro
the annexation of Cuba to the Aiuericau Union.
To that sensible und numurou* mujoruy we have
the honor und tho pride 01 belonging; und aa echoes
of tlicir sentiments, iu harmony with our own, we
may express, with the resolution of free men, tliut
we desire anuexalior. tc the United States. But we
wish tliut it should take piano by houcrnblr pro
ceedings, which may not stain our brow with the
t- tecrabio insult of u negotiation, of a treaty of bar
gain and sale between these buttes aud Spain. It i9
true, we iiuve no doubt, that our situation would bo
greatly improved, by our beiug free from the odious
Bpauish dmniuation, is wo would enjoy the same
right, as American citizens havo to day ; since ex
ample bus been given that thu goverumout of the
immortal Washington does not carry anywhere des
potism or arbitrary rule. But our weli-ueiug would
be cquivaloul to Um, of the slave who posses from
the nossev ion of a cruel master to that of u hummo,
kind uud generous one, wi.j n:'/lit havufor hi* siuve
as much consideration as for a Ireeniun—though
still with the right of absolute superiority, and what
is inoro, with tho faculty of disposing of him when
ever it wus his will or desire, ThL would be our
condition ou entering luto the bosom of the Ameri
can confederation, without litlea or merits to al
lege iu our bohalf. Will the government of this
couutry believe that the acquisition of Cuba, by
ineuns of purchaso would bo more profitable to it I
Wo br'icve not. The Cubans, deprived of the hon
or, would not havo u frank alfectiou towards tho new
possessors of the island, and would still look with
tepuguanco upon the ohameful cnudiiton of their
liberties. Not *0 wlica tuey, uf-er a victorious
struggle with Urn oppressors uf tbeir country, would
purohaso independence with the price or their blood
uud tho strength of their arms. Thus, and ouly
thus can bo assured a comp Lie iinrmony between
the Union and the new Suite migrafteu lufu it, ta ud
the annexation thereof proclaimed by the rpontuuo-
ous and sovereign will of thu Cuban poople.
The Cubans have found in this country u decided
protection for their cause; Americans havo shed
thoir blood, have perished, and have sacrificed their
interest* for the liberty of Cuba iumakiug a common
cause with us. 4ml why diiMlil the pUf* and &o<>le
blood of so many victims become uie'*v» and thei*
sacrifices remain obscured by a negotiation f The
Cubaus will always have engrailed ou their hearts
the purest sentiments of gratitude for the men who
have struggled und who sacrificed themselves in
their cause, but they cau have no afiettiou for the
oneinie* of their glory and for Go&ewbo think of
depriving them of it by a haudfut of money.
Foriuuutely, this is not tho idea of ilia majority of
this great people. Put if it should unfortunately
hwppeu thot the opinion of those who are working
for a negotiation to purchase Cuba for some millions
of dollars should ti iumph, aud if those ends could
be attained without any obstuclo on tha part of the
Spanish government, let it be understood that the
realization of this piojoci will occusion in tho future
serious and disagreeable dissension. Iu such a
cuoe we ccrteiuly would belong to the number of
the malcontents, because we valuo iu the highest
degree the honor, the glory, and the good name of
our country, towards which our most ardent aspi
rations travel, und for which noble cause we would
cheerfbllv encounter, as we have done un to the
present lime, every kind ot sacrifices. We wish
Cuba freo by the means of a triumphant revolution,
but we repudiate our liberty if wo have to acquire
it ut the price of our dishonor. No Cuban who retains
the recollection of bis compatriot* i umolaled as
sacrifices for their country, shall ever accept such u
condition.

I'ouu found here tho Leuno Lonapeos—t!i
member of tho great Akonquiit stock—which spread
over half America. Tney received him kiudly, and
he treated them well, and thoir descundnuf* remem

Miquuo. His rule and eoveruiupul were equally
the pruico of those Iudo-Grecks, Uih Iroquois, bettor
kuown to tho English it* tho bix Nations, and they
bestowed on him the distinctive name of Onus.—
Both these tortus aro indiuu equivalents for tho
name of l*enn.
But, whatever bo the character and capacities of
the Indiuu luiud, tiny mo our predecessors—our
wards—our brothers. We owe them kindness, jus
tice, heiunrolence. We owe them those great means
by which nations are uxnllad—l tiers, education,
Christianity. They are, it is tree, a lost liuk iu

plug to inquire ichtre they wore lo .1, or when (hey
were loti, it is tbe highest duty of our nationality to
welcome them aa men, xo^ptoysci ihniu as trfbps,
and, ns a Christian people, to cherish them. Aye,
aim to receive them, as we receive emigrants of nil
Europe, into the great family of die American

Tho Comet, now visible every evening to the
nuked eye, iu the nor..iwestorn part of the heavens,
si .no 20 degrees above ths ho izon, l ogins to at
tract universal utteuliou. Occasionally it has been
visiblo iu some quarters before it was dark, even.
O.qMoi.duy evening tliore vero heavy streaks of
black clouds across its course, which intercepted
the view for fifteeu or twenty luiautes Uf a time,
but when it emerged, as it were, from between these
streaks, it wm scon to gr< it advantage. The nu
cleus is so well dofiued that its phase may bo easily
detected by a glass of moderate power. Astronomers
think thu comet is upprouchiug the suu, aud that it
will shortly disappear from our view. Seen through
a telescope, its body appears rouud uud solid, whilo
the tail seems to flicker or flash.
Tina “ illustrious stranger" is represented to be
tho same comet discovered ou the lUlh of Juno, by
Klinkerfries. Wo need bo under no particular up-
prehuusion that it will come iu contact with our
uirly planet, ns i)r. Bond, of the Cuinbridge Obser
vatory, tells us that its distsuce from the earth is
some sixty or seventy millions of miles! Tho same
authority assures usi' at it is some thirty millions
of miles distsul irom the sun.
This comet is the most imposing that bus appear
ed fur several yoars, aud those who have good iu
strunents should not fail to notice the interesting
visitor, Ou Tuesday evening there was a marked
change noted in tho appearance of the comet. Tho
Util was much thinner and longer, while the nucleus
was much smeller, aud more dense and bnl'iant;
tho general aspect of the whole toing *ha' of a
bright silver star, enveloped nnd followed by a show
er of silver. It is thought that this comet will reach
its perihelion on the 27*h inst.
Comets used to be looked upon as the certain pro
cures ‘ of war, prstileiioo, famine, or some other
dire calamity, hut in those latter days tho world has
learned to look upou them with awe and admiration,
and not with Teur.
It was Dr. llulley who first proved that many of
the appearances of comets were but the periodical
return of the same bodies. “ Halley’s comet" per
forms its revolution in about aevoi.:y-six years. It
appeared in 1730, aud coino to its perihelion ou tinr
|^‘°f March. Its last appearance was made in
That which is known as Encke's comet wa: first
discovered oy M. Tons, Nov. Vlill1618, but it was
justly uumed by astiouomere liter Professor Eucke,
from nis success in detecting its orbit, motion* end
perturbations. It is ouo of the three comets * iiich
have uppsared uucording to prediction, und iur re
volutions are madu iu tb-eo year* and fifteen weak*.
Biela t comet (called after its discoverer, M. Rioja,
AustOan officer,) was discovered Febroarv 28th,
18iW. It is also one of the three comets whose re-
appearance was predicted; its revolution being per
formed iu six yours and thirty-eight •reeks.’ Its se
cond upi-oaraneo was in 183'.*. when tho time of Its
perihelion passage was N» v. fWrt. Its third appear-
auco was in 1839.
The auciouts were frequently visited by theso er-
ratic bodies. Justin tolls us of tin- simultanecus
appearance of tire, which were seen for seventy-two
duys together, aud whose splendor oclipstu that of
thu mid-day suu, and occupied 45 degrees, or tbe
fourth part uf the heavens. This was 135 years
B.C.
These pbeuomeua were first rationally explained
by Tj cuu Brucue, about the year 1577. Tho orbits
of 1 comets .wet o proved to be ellipses by Newtoo, iu
1704.—N. Y. Express.
