However villages inuy differ In size and appear- auoe, men nud manners, all are alike in one respect. All havo their heroes / every group of sixteen houaus has its hero, By a hero, I moan not the greatest, strongest, or wisest man in the village; not ho who ins the greatest or most salutary influence over the Inhabitants, but he whoffi all notice, whom all talk about, whose affairs are desenutod upon by tho poll* Uoiao, and the ploughman, the matron aud the maid. There is but one hero in a village, and in Sander- T'lle Ih.t wee Anihony Senders. Ill, f.ibgr, who lied bolne the title of Squire Sander,, end in honor of whole greet-,riuidfntlior the village lied boon named, bed lone eloce died, leaving Antliony «ola ®« hl> domains and successor in hisbusinoss; which was that of vending wares of various kinds, after the mauuer of a country store. He roes should be described—both porson and cha racter | my hero and the hero of Sandervihe, was a little man, in every sense of tho word ; bis height did not exceed five feet four inches, bis person was extremely ibln and skeletou like, surmounted by “ r Vflsr H, * e shoulders, presenting nn appearance which Tendorod it doubtful whether ho was uot do- formed, aud the lads (saucy fellows) who had just opened their Sbnkspearos, wore wont to whisper " King Dick” ns he passed. lie Imd no neck, hut noar the top of his shoulders, Jncliuing forward, was situated a head, quito large, and of straogo de velopment; a wonder in the scienco of “ buinpolo- gy»" and a puzzle (I doubt not) for a learned dis ciple of Snurzheim. In hie face there was nothing rcmarkablo, save its utter vacuity ; whether tho geniui sparkled in his eyes, nono know, for thbyiwore almost entirely cosceulcd by drooping |U« hod shaggy brows. Ills mind novor roamed bo- yona tho precincts of his village—never soared nbovn tbe height ofiti church spire; tho idoa of fau>a and glory bad never entered his head ; dealing in six- nonces was his appropriate sphero. He had no familiar acquaintances or friends ; never associated with the young gentlemen, never spoke to tho young ladies, and uevor looked at them in church. Strange hero, you say, but he was tho hero of Sandervillo; all talking about him. Tho old ladies would give a sly wink as they told their daughters that whoever wasao lucky Os to win Anthony Sanders, would win a fortune; the old geutloinen would rosponso, “ Yes, Mr. Sanders will dio n rich man.” The young beaux laughed at tho old boau (for ho was n little 011 “ »ho *hady side” of fifty) and wished for his money to makn a dash; the girls wondered why ho did not get married, and why he never noticed them. It was u Saturday in summer. Tho old stage-coach wheeled into tho villago of Sandersvillo, aud halted at Mrs. Allen’s door.
