Mr. Wxuster's Library.—From a lector
in the Now Orleans Picayune, written at
Marshfiold, Mass., wo extract tho following,
relativo to Mr. Webster’s Library :
The library, which is tho largest room in tho man-
■ion and situated ou the first door, is of Gothic
build, and was plauned by Mr. Webstar and his he-
loved daughtor Julia. It was in this room that the
great vtnteiman done most of his head work aud
writing when absent from tho capital on a visit to
hi. family, or lor the purpose of obtaining that se
clusion nud quiet so necessary to ouo on whose
shoulders hung tlio deetiuies of a nation. The num
ber of hooks iu this library cntinot bo loss than
twenty-five hundred or ttireo thousand, all of which
aro standard and valuablo works; they are sepa
rated into fivo diffuront collections, ouch collection
Aomipylng a neat library by itself, aud are eo ar
ranged as to give the room as you enter it a very
tine nppenruuco. The majority of the works relate
to foreign countries, aud are tho productions of
tlio.n countries. This somewhat surprisod me ut
first, but 1 came to Hie couclusiou that ou matters
relating to the United States Mr. Webster wa
well versed to need an extraordinary supply of
books to refresh hie memory.
Besides this library, Mr. Wuhatnr had another in
the garden, where in creeled a small building, in
which he used to write ot odd times when tho weatb
«r wh« very warm, or when he wished retirement
from all savo tho sprightly birds that would ci
chirping at his window. It was in this building,
“ ollicn" as Mr. Webster was pleased tq call it, that
ho told George J. Abbott, t»q., “he done his hard
work yet tho labor was ono ho delighted in, for
times almost without number before the cock crew
«us Mr. Webster in this offico, busily engaged in
dip! duties. It whs seldom tho suu found
him a slmnberor, for he lovod the delicious fro.h-
noss und sweetness of tho tnorniug loo well. When
company was at his house, he would riso even earli
er than common, and aftortakiug his morning walk,
ho would proceed to whatever writing was required
at his hands, and have it all finished before tbo
breakfast bell was heard calling him lo tliut table
over which lie prosidod with such grace ami digni
ty. Breakfast over, be was ut the service of the
frieuds who had viuitod him. What a modol for
tho whole legiou of diplomats; you, for tho entire
world I
In tho garden library tlioro aro some five or six
hundred books, ull of which remain precisaly as
when Mr. Webster last loft the building. Ono door
of the library which coiitiiiiis tho books ii partly
open, aud on the lower shelf lies 11 couple of books
which Mr. Webster had taken down for perusal,
but not roturued to their places. His chair stands
in the some spot as when ho rose from it, while the
pon and ink aro ready for another touch of that
hand which, alas I lies cold iu death.
A Novel Locomotive.
The Boston Traveller gives an account of a new
locomotive, the Texas, just built in that city, in
which tlio powor, instead of being applied directly
to the wheels by connecting roils, is appliod to the
top of no upright beam, placed just iu front of tho
fire-box on oach side of the boiler.
“ From tho top of this beam, which moves about
15 degrees on 11 heavy pivot, runs a rod to tho back
driver and from the bottom ruus u rod to tho from
driver. Tbo boiler siu quite low, whilo tbo tank
bangs below tho wheels. Tho link is also ot inoat
novel construction, and is said to be a most impor
tant improvomnnl, the link working within tbo
block, Instead of tho block within tlio link. Tlio
locomotive weighs nbout thirteou tons with the
tender which is contracted with it, tho boiler and
Muk being placed on tho same framo. It hits but
four wheels, and those aro hollow drivers, and aro
placed ono pair in front of the boiler, and one pair
under the tank. The cylinders uro 1*J>4 inches in
diameter, aud are outside connections. The power,
instead of bouig applied directly to the drivers by
contracting rods, as is usuul, it is applied to tho top
of an upright brain.
The advantuges derived by tho novol construction
of the locomotive, are, tho «hm» with which great
power nan bn applied, nud tlio great gain made in
bringing tho whole weight of tho nngino and tender
to aid mdruwing a heavy load. It is said that a
thirteen ton engine, built on the new model, can do
the samn work as a twenty ton engine built eo that
the power is applied lo the drivora ut the fire box.
Tho locomolivo just completed is for a road iu
Texas. Tliore is also in process of construction
four others after the same inode), iutended for a
road in l'ciinsylvauia.
Ou Saturday, with a view of testing tho capabili
ties of tlio engine, the “ Texas'’ was attached to n
heavy freight train, consisting of fourteen long cars.
It drew them with tlio greatest ease from Hoii'ti
Hritintruo to Boston, making the time ullotled to tlio
train to a second. This train, which is one of lira
heaviest ou the road, is usually drawn by a twenty-
five ton locomolivo. Tbo result of lira experiment
IS deemed conclusive that tlio locomolivo will prove
iu every respect successful, aud that a twelve ton
engine can, when built after tlio new plan, do the
work of n twenty tun ongiuu of tlio ulu mode]. Those
interested in the matter, can sco it at South Boston.

The Lost Ticket 4 Or, A Frenchman In a
Htcvr.
In returning front a trip to tho Lakes, a few days 0041,1
ago, I witnessed a little aff-tir that makes quito an
item in my note-book, and may aimisoyour renders,
After a weary drive, in a nrocesiiun of twelve car
riages, that moved solemnly for twelve hours over
as many milrs of beautiful country, wa pulled up in
front of the “ National," in Springfield, nt about 9 1*.
M. The Circus and County Court kept that boun
tiful little town in a densely populated state, so
much so, that the sixty or seventy pa»*cugers tliut I
counted us travelling companions, could not find
bod* to rest their weary limbs upon, but were forced
to tako carpet-bags, trunks, juleps, until tbo
for Cinciuunii would give us inoro comfortable
quarters. Among the rost, a little French man, w lioso

faded silk moved restlessly
box in 011a bund aad tho umbrella in tbo other,
pouring forth nil uninterrupted Mreera of incompre
hensible English, in n way sullicantly ludicrous to
amubo two crowd*. Suddenly the little garlic wor
shipper discovered, to his utter dismay, that Ira hnd
lost Ids ticket, purchased at Buffalo, and warranted
to curry him through to the Ik-uric House in CJnciu
nati. Here wus a predicament ! nnd in the con
ateruaiinii of the moment ho dropped both hat-box
und umbrella, and vociferated loudly, und in razor
grinding tones, for tho stage agent.

at lira time of Alon«icur La Frog’s deepest diatrns*

talking to a number of friends, when some mis

pocket book—gathering up his hut- box and umbrella,
and reaching tlio hotel, wus fort 111111 to enough to find

In the morning soon after breakfast, we wero all
comfortably seated iu the cars, and tearing along nt
a break neck speed, Frenchy sat close to me, and
jabbered incosnuntly. Shortly after, the conductor
mitered, with the usual salutation of “Tickets, gen

Ho was just about to nHBa*sinulo English in reply,
when a benevolent individual, who sat next to him,

‘ Harr, yo
Atintrnlln nnd it* F11 euro—A New Empire.
Tito growth of Au.itraliu is one of the modern
wonders. Uut tho other day it was a deserted spot,
comparatively speaking. At tho present moment it
i« u busy liivo of human lioittgu, und ulrendy a pro
position is boldly advocated ia tome of (lie journals,
to pursue the courso which yoars ago wus pursued
by lira American Colonics, aud issue a Declaration
of Independence. To thin complexion must it come
at last. Tho mother couutrj' would scarcely object.
The idea of rotaiuiug the colony by forca of urms
could scarcely be entertniued. The distance is loo
greut, tho cost would be loo enormous, and tho
movement, moreover, would bo decidedly unpopular
with tlio British people. All that cuu lie dono, is to
soulho the feuliugs of dissatisfaction that exist, and
propuro for the worst. Australia possesses tho elu-
mciiis of u great empire. The extent of territory is
immense. The British exports havo increased with
in a few years nt u rute truly extraordinary. Thou
sands of emigrants are, moreover, crowding over
every month, and tho population Uiuh augmented,
consists of a hardy, industrious and enterprising
race. It ifl stated that in one year Victoria lias
doubled its population, having increased from95,0UU
in tlio beginning of 1852, to 200,000 in 1833.—
The tomiHgo of snipping inwards has nearly quadru
pled within the same period. Aud so, also, with re
gard to tho revenue. In 1852 it amounted to £380,-
U00 while this year the aggregate will bo in tho
neighborhood of £2,000,000. These figure* tell thn
whole story. Iu Victoria tho imports in 1851
amounted to more than a million, and in 1852 they
exceeded four millions. Tho exports for the same
period roso from a million and n half to nearly seven
millions and a half—not dollars, be it roiucinborod,
hut pounds sterling. As far as ascertained, no less
than oighteuu and a half millions sterling in gold
were renlized iu Victoria iu 1852, or upwards of
$92,000,000. A fow years ago and lira village of
Melbourne was an ohscuro spot, with a handful of
inhahituntn, and little or no commerce. Now it has
a population of something like eighty thousand, aud
according to u late letter, iu its harbor may be seen
at least one hundred three-masted vessel*, several
steamers and any quaulily of small shipping. “ All
the principal streets are thronged with passen
gers and vehicles of every kind, while the linos of
usceudiug dust which the eye traces far into the in
terior attest the incessant traffic lo and from tho
capital, ulong tko two great highways loading to the
nriucipul fields of thn Ovens and Mount Aloxaudor."
The prices, of course, change frequently aud ra
pidly; ami thus fortuuos are lost and made by tho
eculatious iu tho courso of a few wuoks. Already
nro are quite a number of millionaires iu Australia,
id some of tlieso ton years ago wero needy adven
turers. At first society was in a frightfully disor
ganized uud turbulcut condition. But affair* aro
gradually improving, and this improvement will
coutinuo with the march of population aod the pro
gress of civilization. As yet there are fow Ameri
cans in Australia. Tho distauco is loo far, and Cal
ifornia has presented stronger tomptatious. But
gradually the indoomablo spirit of our couutrymen
will work iu way ihither, while already quite an
activo tt ado is going on, between some of the New
England and Australian parts.
Australia, wu repnar is < esiinod to become a great
empire. It is now iu iu chrysalis staio, so to spoak.
Fifty years hence, aud the cbnuge will bo truly ex
traordinary.— Pkila. Inq.
Cy*The N. Y. Times says that tho public will be
{lad to know that Gen. George !’. Morris has col-
octed his scattered poems, which have hitherto
b«ou dispersed over the world, in newspaper, peri
odical aud minor volumes, into a large and hand
some volutno, revised by himself, und Tmauiifulty il-
lurtratcd by Weir. It is, wo understand, already
in tho hands of the binder, and may very eoon be
expeclod. That these popular ballads, in this ele
gant casket, will find their way to every library and

(Jii the 15th inst., a most revolting murder
committed about three miles asst of Oberlin, Ohio.
A rauu namod Fullham, bad slandered a Mies Bur
her uud another young Indy. The brother of Miss
B.irbor, nnd 11 Mr. Lovell, the lover of lira othor
slauderod girl, went to Fulihtm to talk tho mutter
over. Ho repulied them with threat*, aud became
euruged. They left him und returned to their work.
After supper one of the parties proposed that they
should luko their rifles and go over to Fullham and
frighten him. Acting in acrordauco with the pro
posal, they took their guns, (a rifle nnd a shot gun)
and started. On arriving, they found Fullhnm and
hi* wifo raking hay. Lovell advanced to him nnd
said : “ Well, i’vo come to have it out." Fullhnm
seized a pitchfork and made a despei uto plunge at
him; his wife clinging to him, shrieking, and en
deavoring to prevout his striking Lovell. He suc
ceeded in wounding him in threo pUccs with the
fork. Enragod beyond control at this, Lovell fired
his piece, missing F., and lodging the contents in
hi* wife’s head, wounding her dangerously, porhap*
mortally. Ho then banded tho empty gun to Barber
to reload, took the loaded gun and started for homo,
Fullham following him with his pitchfork. After
going soma distauce, Lovell turned round and fired,
and Fuliliain being but two foot from him, received
the whole charge in his side, tearing him in a horri
ble iiiuuaur, and killing him iiiBtuntly. Ho leaves n
family of three childrcu. The murderers were im
mediately arrested.
Heavy Kouukhv on a .Steamboat.—A gentlo-
man who was a |iu**euger on the steamer Caroline
from this city on bar upward trip to the Illinois
rivor, says tho Ht. Louie Republican, of the 12th,
returned yesterday evening, bringing intelligence of
a heavy robbery which had been committed on
board of tlmt boat not long before his departure.
The person who tnmcoednd in oflocting it outcred a
state room iu which lira clerk wns sleeping, and ab
stracted the key to tlio offico safe from his pocket.
The safe was (lien unlocked, and a package of money
amounting to $1,500, all in $20 gold piscos, was ta-
ken. it Iraloilged to a passenger 011 board, who had
deposited it with the clerk for accurity.-The robber
also possessed liiimeif of $200 of the bout s money.
Of the latter there was a $50 bill on the Batik of
Missouri. Thore were also some $20 gold pieces,
and a variety of imall bills. This robbery look
idaca earl} on Tuesday morning, while tbe boat was
lying ashore at the town of Hardiu. The robber
made an easy escapo with his booty and a companion
in a characteristically worthy mnimor. Tho two
had feigned being strangors, but for them both to
havo letl during the night, ut the *amo unfrequented
landing, might have awakened suspicions. The
name of one only, therefore, was given to the clerk
as intending to le&7e the boat thorn during the night,
aad by biin written for instruction to the mate du
ring lira uiglit. They managed, however, to get
access to the card and alter the instructions for oue
co os to make it appear to be intended for two, and
thus decived, allowed them to land. They
