Ono writer, who subscribes a star to his articlo, says : With your correspundent Nerva in Tues day’s Courier, wo ure inclined to question the taste and propriety of the lato instructions. The details and formula* of dress ure nului nlly aettled by the lex loci, and many of the jour nals that are now loudest iu pruising the Sar torial regulations of our premier, would be among the first to censure uny foreign minis ter who would violato or disregard tlio usage* and requirements established by the official etiquette of Washington. If any one ia dis posed at first to regard the mutter as ono ol ©light importance, let him but look around and observe how wo—boosting as we do, our republican simplicity—are smitten by pugouti- try and show. We wero not awaro that there wero uny “ requirements established by the oificial eti quette of Washington.” At the President’s levees, the President and his Cabinet, and the highest olTtcials ot the uatlon, appear in the plaiu and simple dress of the American geuilemuu. On such occasions, the subjects of foreign priuces uppear in their gaudy livery, with their orders uod decorations, if they please, without giving ofTenco or oxciting the ridicule, which a few of tbo popinjays of the French court, according to the Courier'» cor respondent, saw fit to direct against the Amer ican charge. Thu writer should not confound the sensible portion of the American peoplt with the snobs among us, who are "smitten with pageantry and show.” Wc think we arc Bafo in assuming tliut ho and they are in the minoiity. All Aiuuricuu vessels arriving at the port of Malaga ore sent to Mahoue, as the au thorities believe the yellow fevor and cholera is raging all through the United Slates. The Gibral tar authorities have temporarily compromised the matter by subjecting American vessels to u seven days' quarantine. GT Messrs. Rickard Drinjlry Sheridan. By Thomas Moobk. In two volumes. New York: Rvdfleld. This is a familiar biographical sketch of one of themostdislinguislied Statesmen, Poets and Dramatists of his age, by an author more capable perhaps ihnn any other to appreciate his genius and character. Among the valued works of the oullior of the "melodies,” few will be more highly prized by the admirers of true genius than his Giography of Sheridan. The volumes ore in Moore’s peculiarly plea sing style, and contain besides incidents in the public and private life of tiheridun, and por tions of his correspondence, other matter of in terest concerning his liberury, friends, and co- temporaries. The narrative ia said to bo n truthful his tory of tho adventures, persecutions and suf ferings of the author and bis coinputriots, though related in tho form of a fiction. In this volume tho author has given to the public a concise yet thorough history of the literature of Greece, from tho curliest ago of which any knowledge exists, to the close of the Byzantine era. This history is divided into seven periods, viz : the mythical, the poeticul, tho early prosuic, the Attic, the Alexandrine, the Romuns, and the Byzantine; and under these heads we are furnished with accounts of all the early burds, the lyric and tragic pools, tho comedians, the historians, the orators, the philosophers, the geographers, the mathemati cians and astronomers, the grammarians, the scholiasts and coimnuuintore, the musical and medical writers, compilers, and other literary Greeks of whoso productions uny record re mains. Soared literature wna not within tho uuthoi’sNcopu, und ho lias therefore mentioned but few of tho ecclesiastical writers who em ployed tho Greek lunguage in the primitive ages of Christianity. In the Augusta Constitutionalist of y ester day we find the following article: I take tho opportunity to drop you a few lines to givo you a short history of a Bt-ui Chase on Monday, lire V!9ih of August, in Jcf- lerson county, Ua., on Brier Creek. There wero about thirty uicu met for tiro purpose of hunting a Bcur whose signs hud boeu discov ered in different places w here ho had been, in corn fields onting corn, watermollons, pouches &c.—About eight o’clock iu tho morning, a portion of tho men, with about twenty-five or thirty dogs, principally hounJs, entered the .Swamp, and in uboul thirty minutes roused tht' Bear iu n pluce called by tho citizens thereabout, Noketchy Island, and about tht time he entered the open Swamp, winch wns r rery short time, there were four guns dischurg ud at him, all without effect. The Bear was, I suppose, tolerably thin in order; ne weighed 204 pounds, a pretty good Bcur for Jeifersou county, Ga. GT Mr. Corcoran, ol Washington, has iu his garden, several beuutiful daldius, the height of four of which is as follows : 11 feel 8 inches, 11 feet 6 inches, 10 feet 6 inches, 9 feet 6 inch es; the trunk of the last one is divided into lour parts, tho largest of which is four inches in circumference, aud the plant hus uu it 341 buds. iy Tbe Wulomlle Mail says that several persons have just returned from the diggings at Madrid, on Sandy rivor, Maine. The company engaged in digging consists of six persons, most of them from Springfield, Muse. They have bought twenty or thirty acres of lund and are engaged in sinking a shaft and washing tho earth for gold. The amount obtained, thus far, will pay «hem moderate wages, nothing more. Tho geld is found in fine black sand, in pieces ranging from about the aize of a wheat kernel to the smallest perceptible par ticles—though pieces are said to have been found as lurge as a kernol uf corn. The opinion is expressed that the quantity is small, and that the mines will nut pay for working. Gome one tnousaud six hundred acres of land have recontly been purchased in Iowa, on which a colony of monks have settled. Among their peculiur habits may be mentioned Ibut they never mingle with the world, and when they put on a new suit of clothes, that suit is kept on, wuking or sleeping, till it falls off or becomes unfit fur wear. Affair* In Ulsxlcs, The PicayiiM of (he 15th, has some interest ing and iuipottant information in relation to ihn present cutidition of Mexican affairs. It pays: From a gentleman who came passenger on the steamer Texas from Vera Cruz, end who has excellent sourcesof information concerning the real slate of political affairs in Mexico, we learn a number of interesting facia on the sub ject, which confirm what wo published some weeks since. It would appear that the intelligent portion of tho population of Mexico have come to the conclusion that Hontn Anna’s Government, in augurated with such splendid and dazzling promises for Mexican greatness and power, is a total failure. Tho vital energy is wauling. The machine works on, but it is merely the refuse or waste steam that still gives it motion. The liberal men of the country, united for once, oppuse tho “ Napoleon of the West,” dome openly, some covertly, thwarting him as far an possible in every scheme—venttiling to the brink of the precipice, but not so far us to lip in. Nothing but the union of all parties _ owld sovo the country, and rescue it from its present death of degradation; und this union entirely wauling. Conspiiacies abound, and every man of more or less note is thought to be implicated in them. Santa Anna is evidently on the watch for such attempts, mid meets them by decrees of banishment to the interior, or complete ile. A few days before our informant left the city ol Mexico, a universal sensation wus occasioned there in consequence of several prominent persons being brought under these iiisiruineiiiHol'govcinuiL'ntnlnuthoiity. Among i was Robles, formerly Minister of War ; i y Tamariz, who, a lew weeks since, was Santa Anna’s Miniutcr of theTreusury: Munus lo »ii(l Luis de la Rosa, lute Mexican Minister ut Washington City. Robles was banished to tuc interior; Tamuriz was treated in tho same manner; Rosa wus ordered to Htait from the city in forty-eight hours; aud Lierdo was sent oil in anuther direction. This ull'air had scarce blown over when a more fonninblo cuinqurucy was announced to huvo been discovered, having ramifications all tho Republic, und counting uny number of persons among its inombeis. Furlong, the present Governor of i'uebla, aud Mugicia, the lute Governor, were ui rested us being concern* ii tho plot, and were nrraigued before a military tribunal. The Fiscal desired to pro ved capitally against them, nnd the generul impression was that they would bo executed. The report was also that these were not tho hiefs of tho conspiracy, but that tho leaders would boon be discovered. The two prisoners were sent to Vera Cruz, and it was thought uuld be banished from tho country. From what our informant told us, the whole of Mexico is ono vast nest ot conspirators. The chiefs are uot yet known, nor docs it seem probuble they will bo, at least for some time to come. Santa Anna appears to rely for his upremacy on the fact that tho opposition is mudo up principally ol lawyers, who have uotio among them hold enough to proclaim himself (heir leader, and tako decisive steps aguinst the government. However, oor informant states thnitho army of 12,000 which Santa Anna lias underarms is not to be depended on by him for a day. That is the most startling fact of all, (hot is to be pluccd to his disadvantage in a glunce at his prilbabio future. Ccrtuinly, wo suould think, if any portion of the Mcxicuu popula tiou bo devoted to Santa Anna, it is tlm sol diery. Under him they are all powerful; but 'ould suein now that they only wait the advent of a new chief lo desert their stundurds. That would of course bo his ruin at once. Yet be does uot seem to apprehend any dan ger worth fearing. This may hu accounted lor by the statement ot our informaut, tliut Santu Anna lias lost nearly all of his former energy; that ho is lazy and cureless, und luuves tho direction of his atfuirs to his Minis ters. Tlio Eluriuuh War. Tho war in Buiuiuli wus announced, in tho (Queen’s speech at tho closing of I'ailiumont, laving ended. It ought never to liavu commenced. Lord Dalhnusic, the Guvernro-Genernt, erased the first figure, muking the claim under £1000, and sent Commodore Lumbert to deinuod satifuction of. the Governor of Rangoon, with orders, if tliut functionary refused it, to apply to the Ring of Ollier persons, seeing what wus in build, sent in their claims lor losses at Ran goon. When lie wus towing his prize dowu tho river, u shore bnttery fired u lew guns nt tho captors, who instantly silenced it, but thereupon de clared war, which nctuuliy continued for near ly 12 mouths. And all this for a miserable claim ol £1000. Tlio very costly way in which this wur was commenced, evidently either from sheer wuntonness or a desire of "annexation,” has obtained, us it detierved, the reprobation of rational people in this country The lust of conquest, as held by Eust Indian officers, is very lemaikuble indeed. The London Shipping (iazette re marks on the bullion in the Bank ol England to tho following elleet : Tho stock of bullion, it is understood, will, by the returns to be published this evening ' the London Gazette, show a further dccreu which will then exhibit a continuous uction ol the same kind for no less than ten consecutive weeks, forming a total diminution ol £1,900, 000 during that period. Tho rate of decreuse is nearly £200,000 per week, and, if still • tinned at the name rule, must inevitably lead to more sliingont measures by tlio bunk to check tho etllux.
