The Epidemic.—The reporter the past

Washington dated tho 27th eays: Tho Do-

A letter has been received hero from Con

native 1 anguago, and whore ho found tho inhabitants
vory poaceabln, aud so littln disposed to war that,
were they attacked, they would probably practice
the injuctions of the Peaco Society. Very different
from these inoffensive folk, and affording a striking
contrast to tbom, aro the inhabitants of the Feejbu
Islands, among whom cannibalism prevailed until
quite recently, and is still far from unknown. Lying
off the shoro at night, you will hear u drum beating
tap-n-tsp, tap a-tap, tap a tap—it is the death drum
of a cannibal feast. Not only do tho Feojoeaiis oat

doom awaits tho wretched victims of shipwreck.
Vainly may tho stranded mariner proeont himself
a casual traveller requiring hospitality—the hungry
villagers detect what they term "salt water in his

bitual indeed has been tho practice, that the mis
sionaries say that the Frenjuoau language contains
no word for a simple corpse, but the term used iin
plies tho idea of food, just as if wo might have
other word than mutton to describe our sheep.
Is evoni ascertained that in periods of scarcity fami

one of their race. In this enso tlio body was to he
burnt. Tho widow was supporting its heud, nnd
besido it stood a pyre of dry fir. The trader's in
trusion caused some demur, but ultimately the cere
mony weutou. The body was laid upon a pile, aud
instantly covered with a pile of bUukcts, clothing,
and other articles, sacrificed hy thu bystanders to
propitiato the waudoriug spirit. Then, amidst yells
and gesticulations, the mother of the deceased ad
vanced to fire the pilo. The flames soon lighted up
the f .rest, aud by their glare, the relations of tlm
dead rushed to torture Ins widow. Tho wretched
woimuii was flung into tho fire again and again, until
length she struggled forth, aud fell fuinling
grass, but uol yet was sho suffered to rest. Her
moiher-iu-law caught an axo from theground, struck
her a violent blow on tho shoulders, aud would have
repeated it, but that the trader sprang forward and
wroMcd the weapon from her hands. Fortunately
for him, sufficient revenge hnd been taken, aud his
interference was not resented.
It were well if tho dead wore only propitiated by
offerings like tlioao mentioned above. Al the rapids
of the Columbia river, in 16H. our author was pros-
out iu nu ludhn cump when divmo service was bo-
ing celebrated by the resident missionary, and ob
served in a corner of the lodge a youth apparently
dying of consumption, with his brother sealed by
lie. Uefore the service was concluded, it wus
announced that the spirit of the sick man had de
parted, wheu the brother sprspg upon a decrepit
old womau among the congregation, and before a
hand could be raissd in help, had severed her head
from her body. And ugain, iu the turns year, Le
Tranquillf, a Hhcwuppe chiof, died aftor a protract
ed illness, having with his latest breath fully war-
raniod his European uniiio, by doairing that no veil-
guauco should follow hi* decease. Hut not so could
his widow bo content. Seizing a gun, she placed it
in tho hauus of her eldest son. 44 Go," she said, apd
revengo your father. “ Go, go, and let your victim
be of uo common rauk.” Hut it was not until he
was tauntod with a womau's cowardice, thot the
young man could be provoked to the deed. Then,
at last, lie took the gun, repaired to tho neighboring
fort, aud seated himself besido the firo in the hall,
where the commandant, an iutimate friend of our
autkor, was walking to and fro. Thoy bad talked
while on various matters, when the ill-fated officer,
turning to leave the room, received the charge of tho
ludiau u gun in his back, and fell to the ground a
corpse. Tho murderor was shot in attempting to
•scape.
It seems the Indians believe that death by disease
is never natural, but ulwuya due to witchcraft or
poison, and that the spirit of the departed cannot
tiud rest until it is appeased by such a sacrifice a* is
here described.
|y A nrgro in Boston had a sovere attack of
rheumatism, which finally settled in his foot. lie
bathed it, and rubbed it, sod swathed iL but all to
no purpose. Fually. tearing awwy the bandages, he
stuck it out, and Miakiug his fist at it, exclaimed,
“ Ac ho away, den ole fuller, ache away ; I shau't do
uuffin more for vat ; dis chilo can stau, it as loug as
you ken ; so ache away.'
