A day or i o ago • portion of ilia earth caved in, and exposed the remains of a human being, no doubt an Indian, who hod been buried in a coffin constructed of pine or cedar bark. The bark was found in an eatraordinsry state of preservation, and contained a human skeleton. From the size and form ol the skull the re mains are supposed lo be those of a female. These bones have no doubt rested in the place where they were discovered upwards of a hundred years, Money Matter* f Trade, «fcc. New York, Oo». 14^-The New York Eve• nisi Poet of this ortning says The sub stance of the foreign advices by the Canada was made known in the street about half.past two yeeterday afternoon, end produced imme diately an uncontrollable and somewhat insane excitement. The fact of the Bank of England having put up its rets of discount to five per cent, was wholly anticipated, and the passage of the Dardanelles by the combined fleets of France and England, was also forseen. The latter step is also pretty well known to be one of peace, for the policy adopted by the two powers alluded to, appears to he peace at all prices, honorable if possible. Yet though all this was foreseen, and though the general opinion previously was that the steamer would bring unfavorable news, a perfect panic took place at the afternoon meetiog of the board of brokers. There was a sudden rush to sell. The bulls became eager sellers, end the only buyers were the bears, who took advantage of the do* f ireasion to aupply themselves with stook to ulfil their contracts, consequently the de- liveries on sellers' options are very large to day. The bears have come out victorious in thr ~ cent speculations. The present difficulties are in some respects owing to wont of confidence—-in greater de gree, to en overtrading beyond the money means owned at capital—-but in greatent degree to the stoppages ol all foreign demand for out railroad securities; not that any will here* turned home from abroad for resale, os nono are hypothecated there. The trading interests are still well supplied with money from their owu resources, their collection of debts being regular and ample ; but the West is drawing upon New York ex cessively ; and will do so till the bulk of the produce lias come forward. In January, money will be coming in from the West. Western deposits will be increas ing again, and easy times will come round Kxp edition from SivirrIi to Liberia* To the Editor of ihe Horning Newt: We design sending an expedition to Liberie, Rail from Savannah, (feo., the 1 tit Decern• her next. McLain, Washington, D. C. Sec. Am. Col. So. Colonization Roomt. The Attempted Financial Panic* Some attempts are made at the North, even by some of the presses, to get up a financial 0aU 44 °* week in Augusta. We understand that they contemplate giving another woek’s entertain ments in Savannah. fy The Kunkle Ni ghtingales govs their first entertainment in Charleston last evening. This company of vocalists have been very suc cessful in Baltimore and the Northern cities during the past summer. Wo may expect ttiem iu Savannah shortly. Hr The Buffalo Courier says Ws have private and authentic intelligence that after the publication of Mr. Morc.y'e letter, the Prussian Minister asked leave to withdraw his note of protest. Excitement in the Market.—Tho im portant advices from Europe were issued in a second edition of the New York Express, early on Thursday afternoon, creating no little excitement on 'Change. The Exprett of Friday saya, holders of flour at once put up prices two ahilliuga per barrel, but there were not mnny transactions at the advance, operators preferring to hold back until further advices. The sales at previous prides, how ever, were nominally large, aggregating 20,000 barrel!. Prices of wheat advanced from two to six cents a bushel. Before the news, the sales reached nearly 35,000 bushels, of all bratids. _ Advance in the Prices or Cumberland Coal.—We learn -that in consequence of the increased demand for coal, which greatly ex needs tho supply, the principal coal companies in the Cumberland (Md.) region, have odvan- cod the prices of coal at Baltimore and Alex andria, as follows: $3 25 per ton for fine '* f5 50 for run of the mines, and $3 85 for lump. This is an advance of 25 cents pei ton, and makes lump coal cost in New York, $5 85 per ton. rates firm at 12al8 per cent. Call loans, to firat-class borrowera, are easy at 7 per cent.— Sterling exchange is active at 109j«1092. The Lanka keep contracting their loans anil diacounta, and afford little asaistunce to the mercantile community. The groat decline in stocks occasions a large demand for money to sustain the requisite demand for stock loons; failing lo do which, loans are called in, or the stocks sold. The foreign advices by tho Canada, ns was anticipated, are unfavorable exceptas to bread stuff's. Flour advanced 25 a 50c. per barrel, wheat 16c. per bushel. All produco but cotton is belter, but that important staple bus declined jnje. It has ever been the case in England, that, as breadstuff's advance in price in Eng land, cotton declines both in prico and con sumption. The enormous price of food necea aarily contract the expenditure by the mans of the people on other objects. The Manchester goods market consequently is declining. Baring Brothers report no marked variation anie. The thing has been done frequently before, for political effect. Politics are not in question now, but there are always those who are desirous of dealing distresses for the pur pose of speculating upon them. The idea that the failure of one or two business or political charletans in New York must bo viewed as iremonitory of general commercial distress, s abaurd. No failuro has vet taken place on Iho part of one even entitled to any confidence. Money, they say, ia dear—because the article is belter in quality now than it wastwo months ago, and therefore worth more. The hanks in Now York have found it noces- nary, for some time pust. lo restrict and reduce their accommodations, l'his was a wise mea- of precaution, and no one really sound could he shaken by it. No doubt a number of speculators and depredators in New York and eisowhere will be bursied up in consequence of the prudent course of the bnnks, and tho public interest requires that there should be a pause in their operations. But commerce, agriculture, manufactures, nd all the brunches of mechanical industry, are ronlly more prosperous now than they have ever been, and nothing is likely to occur that can check them in their carocr of success. The railroad system has, they say, been too much extended—that is, the means of trans portation are coming somewhere near the necessities ol production. We hear of few railroads that aro not well employed, and whoso business is not increasing But the rail road companies hove given thoir bonds! Wliot of it 7 Tho bonds have a lonp time to run yet, and tho interest, and principle, too, may be paid, to a great extent, out of the onruinga of tho roads. in American securities, but a general indispo sition to buy. If sales were forced, a materia) reduction would have lo be submitted to, ox cept for the leading securities. Further Subscriptions to the Pacific IUiLnoAl).—The hooka of subscription to the stock of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company were opened for the second time, a' Metropolitan Hotel, New York, on Thursday. Tho attendance was large, and for nearly two hours, it is *aid, subscriptions were entered at* rapidly as they could be written down. In that time * little over thirteen million of dollars were subscribed, the list being headed by R. T. Barnum, Esq., at $GU0,000. The whole amount was divided among 108 persous resid ing in all sections of the country, being an overage of a little more than $120,000 to each •ubscriptiuu. The books were closed one hour (hr dinner, and re-opened in the afternoon, wlieu a number of additional subscriptions were made. Serious Trouble in thk Cherokee Na tion.—The Washington Star says the Gov ernment had Just received adviceB from the southwestern Superintendency of Indian Af fairs, saying that a portion of the Cherokee nation are in arms against their tribal author) lies, that eoine one hundred of the discon tented recently attacked and murdered John and Washington Adair, two noted friends of tho Ross party ; that, aa ascertained, the anti- Rossitee in arms at this time number; some two hundred fighting men, who declare their determination to kill or drive out from the na tion persons obnoxious to them, to the numbei of sixty-five men. The Government officers (hers regard this eineute as the commence ment of the re-enactment of the terrible troubles in the tribe which, it will be remem bered, occurred in 184G; and they suggest the necessity fur a prompt increase of the United States forces at Forts Smith and Gibson, and also that orders be sent from this point autho rising their employment in tho defence of the authorities of the tribe, if the latter shall demand such assistance. The Indian Bureau liavo at once brought this Bubjcct before the Secretary of the Department of the luterior, with a recommendation that the steps indi cated above be immediately taken by the Gov eminent here. Marine Statistics.—Since the discovery of gold in California, six hundred ships, it ia said, have gone round Cape llurn, into the Pacific, which have not returned. Home were broken up at San Francisco, end some found employment in the Pacific. The abstraction of thia large fleet ftotn the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the causes of the activity which has prevailed in the Eastern ship yards during the last few years. The Bisiiof of North Carolina.—We learn from the proceedings of the Episcopal General Convention that the difficulty i gard tu the credentials of tho Rev. Ur. Atkin ■on, (of Baltimore,) Bishop elect of North Car oline, and the resignation of I)r. Ives, his pred ecessor, has been amicably settled by the con vention resolving to accept them es valid and regular. The new Bishop, therefore, will be consecrated, and it is said with great ceremony at Trinity church, in New Y ork, as soon ns the convention shall adjourn. On the same occa sion Bishop Ives will be regularly deposed. Revolution in Journalism.—The New York Tribune, under (he head of ‘‘n revolu tion in journalism," notices two new inventions. Pint, the manufacture of fine paper from straw instead of rags, by Mr. Mellier, a French che mist ; end second, en improvement in presses by r cilizsn of New York. 11 says: “ It is a printing press, which at a moderate rate of speed, will deliver ' thirty thousand' sheets printed on both sides in a single hour. 0 Its movement combines the original principles of Napier, which aro applied by Hoe in his great press, with soma new and beautifully simple arrangements and devices of the in ventor." Snow in Maine.—On Wednesday before last, snow foil in the town of Rangeloy, (Me.,) to the depth of one font. Between that place and Phillips, travel was interrupted for several days in consequence. The trees bordering the road were eo loaded with snow that they bent down and obstructed the way, a A Jury Burnt in Errior.—Indign.tion meeting, have been held in Washington C o u n • Md., at which the jury who recently ran- •- dered a virdict of acquittal in the Swan cast have been fiercely denounced. In Bronsboro the people formed in procession, headed by the effigies representing the twelve jurors, and pro ceeded through several streets, after which they halted in the square, and there consigned to the devouring element the twelve repreBen tatives of the jury in the Swan case. Fiendish.—On Tuesday morning as the New York train, via Norwich and Worcester, wu within a few miles of the latter place, the engineer espied a big "sleeper" of large heavy timber lying across the track ; he stopped the Ujhaey’b Lands in Iowa.—The lands oc copied by the Hungarian exilos at New Uuda Iowa, granted to them by President Fillmore, autgect to the approval of Congress, were re cently about to be put up at sale by tho U. officers, as Congress had not taken action tho subjeut, but the exiles asked for delay un til the next Congress could have time to act and it has been allowed to thorn. The Mania for Traveling Height.—The Now York Journal of Com merce thus refers lo somo of its manifestations in that city : “ The pressure of travel on our principal thoroughfares is prodigious. Steamboats and railroad cars are crowded to excess. It seems as if every body wnson the move. Between New Haven and this city, which is notour S rentes! thoroughfare, there are six trains per ay, each way, and one steamboat each way Tho Homme Tunnel. A great effort is muking in Massachusetts to obtain from the Legislature ut its next ses sion, it loan of $2,000,000, to aid in the con struction of the lloosac Tunnel. At the last suasion, tho grant wus sustained in tho House, but defeated in the Senate. Tho applicants, however, make out a strong case by the reso lutions, which were adopted unanimously, at tho recent Tunnel Convention, at Fitchburgh. Some of our readers nisv need to he informed that the lloosac Tunnel involves the comple tion of a second line of railroad from Bos ton to the Hudson. This second line is al ready built from Hpston to Greenfield, on the Connecticut river, and tho Trojans having con structed a section of fifteen or twenty miles at the west end of tho line, there remains to he constructed only a section of ubuut forty miles, extending from Greenfield to the New York lino, or a little beyond. This section includes t o lloosac mouotaii), which it is proposed to puss through by means of a tunnel about four miles long. Should this tremendous bore ever beachieved.it will secure tho completion oi the road, which will not only be many miles shorter, hut of easier grades, than the Western Ruilroud via Springfield. Th© Administration nod lb© Ilardabclls. Ion of Ihe Baltimore Sun says :—The re turns from the State elections are coining in, and they show that the Administration is every where triumphantly sustained. The New York election will, as I am confident, result unfavorably to the views ol the Hunker Hards —for either the Softs or the Whigs must prevail. Tha Hunkers estimate their vole at 60,000, hut they cannot calculate upou more than 25,000. The maximum vote will give the election to the Whigs, while the minimum will leave the Softs in possession of the field. On the whole, therefore, the Administration stands very securely upon their declared policy. Col. Davis' letters are considered as express ing t^o views of the Administration on this subject, and his letters meet the approbation of tho oldest and ablest exponent of national whig principles in this city. Thus, it would seem, that the Administration is coming out of its conflict with flying colors. Judge Bronson is out-bragged. He has come hack with a strong letter replying to Mr. Guthrie, but the Secretary can uow brag him out of his office. Mr. Nevin participated, and in which, as ever, he was a gentleman, Garrison called him a " liar, a row dy, and a scoundrel." As the audience pass ed out of the hall, Mr. Nevin’s brother, a lay man, met him and inquired whether those words wore uttered in tlie heat of debate, or coolly. Retraction was refused, and the bro ther twisted Mr. Gurrison’s nose, ns he hurled him against the wall of the Melodeon. Rain Water a Preventive ok Cholera. —Mr. Job* Lea, of Ciuciminti, in u long com muniention to the Gazette, states, ns a fact, that " cholera never becomes epidemic in any dis trict or city whore rain or pure soft water is used," and supports his statements by many important facts. He also states that, during five years past, not one well authenticated fatal case of cholera hss occurred where rain water was exclusively used. A Modern Prometheus.—The following gem purports to he by a suffering individual who has scut us the record of his own deplora ble fate.
