The cotton market continued languid and depressed to-day, with sales of only 175 bales, at 9| to 10 cents. _ The Lat© GenersH Theorem Clillds. The Charleston Courier furnishes the fol lowing brief .ketch of the military aerrices of Gen.Thomas Childs, whose death at Tampa Bay, Florida, by yellow fever we announced on Monday last. General Childs entered the army as 3d Lieutenant, March 11th, 1814; was brereited Colonel, May 9th, 1846, raised to the full rank of Majpr, February 16tb, 1847 and Boon after raised to the rank of Colonel, He greatly distinguished himself at Falo Ailo, and on the following day; and at Monterey led one of the storming parties ill General Worth's division. The General mentioned him in his official report with high approbation ; and he was at the same time recommended by Gen. Taylor to the favorable consideration of the Department, lie fought aide by side at Cerra Gorda with the intrepid Harney, and like him* received the highest commendation of the commander in chief. After the cap ture of Jalapa he was appointed military com mander of that place, and in about a month alter military governor of Puebla. During the absence of the main army from that place, on the 13th ol September, 1847, lie wna attacked by a large Meiican force, and a siege com menced which laated nearly a month, conduct ed part of the lime by Santa Anna himself, but the post was so ably defended that Santa Anna had to raiso the siege and retire to Atliaco. The whole career, indeed, of General Childa in tho Mexican war waa brilliant, and the the country in hia death has lost a gallant sol dier. GT The" ball of tho Germun Ladies So ciety, at St. Andrew’s llall, on Monday night, came off to the entire satisfaction of all con cerned. We learn, from one of the Committee, that some of the gentlemen present-manifested their appreciation of the benevolent object ofthe ladies by making handsome donations to their Society. ____________________ Millinery and Dressmaking.—It will be seen by reference to our advertising columns that Mis. Tomb has removed her Millinery ee- tablishment from her old stand on Burnard-si. to 174 Broughton st., nearly opposite St. An drew's Hall. In thie change Mre. T. has ac quired all the conveniences of room which her increibing business demands, and in the rangomeut und fitting up of her apartments she has manifested a taste and tack, highly ex pressive of her appreciation of the liberal an couragemeut she has so deservedly met. Both old and new customers we are sure will be pleased with her establishment, and the very handsome array of goods to which she invites inspection. iar The advertisement, undor the caption ol “ Yankee Notions,” in another column, will -lirect the attention of the reador to (he largcut stock of fancy goods ever oflored for sale in this pity. Messrs. H. C. Scott A Co. ore now prepared to do * large wholesale business in their line; and we would suggest to pur chasers ot such wares as they offer, to look ir at their estsb isjujpstt and notice tho extont eir stock. V* would direct tho attention of our lady reidera to the Card of Mrs. J. F. Doe, which will be found in another column. Mrs. D. invites the ladies to the opening of her Fall and Winter stock, which takes place to-moi row at her now apartments. These ore fitted up with taste and elogance, and are admirably adapted in their arrangement, to tho conve nience of her patrons. The goods which arc to be offered for inspection comprise tho latest styles hi their several departments, among them some rich and beautiful Silks, in pattern* entirely new and which are to bo the prevail iog fashions the coming winter. Mrs. D’i arrangements are now complete in all that is required or necessary in a millinery and dress making establishment, in the latter will be found patterns for dresses ol the latest mode.— But wo need not detail, as tho ladies of Savan nah, for whose taste she caters, will not only oxamine for themselves, but will we doubt not amply repay tha liberal enterprise she has manifested for their convenience. IYIlfl’. Ilou.c, Charleston. It will be seen by the announcement in our advertising columns, that this new and splen did Hotel will be opened on the 1st of Novem ber under the management of the experienced und popular Mr. Thomas S. Nickerson. In the erection at the Mill’s House the most liber al expenditures of money has been made, and extensive pains taken to adopt all tho latest improvements, in order to render it equal in every respect to the first establishments of the kind in the Union. In a very elaborate notice of the new edifice the editor of the Charleston Courier says— M The Mill’s House is indeed a traveller's palace—such a palace as royalty itself might design to occupy, and in which the most fastidious, however spoiled and pet ted by experience elsewhere, will be enabled to feel at homeland will find nothing iucon- fruous or offensive. Whatever can gratify any reasonable] taste, however ^refined, or minister delight to any sense, has been provi ded without stint or parsimony; and the spectator in one of these magnificent apart ments, who begins tt criticise, Gods himself only able to admire and approve. Allis bril liant, rich and imposing, and splendor is car* rled out as far us good taste could accompany M»" Undor tho management of Mr. Nickerson, tho Mill’s House will soon take rank with tho most elegant and best kept hotels in the coun ty- BT It is intimated in the Boston Pott that the articles which have recently appeared in the New York Heral4 t assailing the adminis tration, and urging the formation of a new cabinet for the purpose of aiding W. H. Se ward’s election to the Presidency, in 1855, are from the pen of Seward himself. Po litical controversy in New York has of late years degenerated into a mere scramble for the spoils of office. Politicians, like prize fighters, contend on either side for the purse. These political Goths, whatever thoir success in New York, should bo taught that they cannot control lh. offices of the Federal Government. [CommvaloaMd.J ! Mr. Editor—In passing up Broughton-st., I on Mondsy evening Inst, my sttsntion was at- (reeled tbs sounds of music at the St. An- draw’s Hall,on enquiry I learned that there was s ball given by the " German Ladies So ciety for the assistance of the sick,” under the management and direction of Messrs. Rosen, berg, Maas, Eckman, Berg and Byck. Procuring a ticket I was ushered into the ball room which was handsomely end taetely decorated for the occasion. The managers politely end courteously cerried me around the room, introducing me to the ladies, whose pleasing countenances and grateful smiles ad tied much to the occasion. The managers showed themselves au fait in the ball room ; the walttes and polkas, both American and German, were enjoyed by every one present. The eupper room was plenteously and bountifully supplied with every delicacy that could tempt the palate or please the eye, and full justice was dono on the pro misee. After enjoying e good supper and many an agreeable waltz, (which was kept up 11 till broad day light,”) I left the room well satisfied that a better got up or managed ball has not been in Savannah for many a long day. Nothing occurred to inor the harmony of the occasion in the remotest degree, but every one studied to please and fascinate—all thanks to tho gentlemanly and polite managers. Stranger. Man Shot in Augusta.—On Satuiday night last a watchman by tho name of Peter Feogan waa shot dead by Augustus Cartledge. Cartlcdgc gave hitn«*lf up to tha authorities. Wholesale Proscription.—The Barn burners at Albany, New York, have been proscribing in a wholesale manuer soino of the most valuable members of the Canal Board. Three Superintendents, soys the Ex press, were removed on Thursday, solely upon the ground that they were National De mocrats or Hunkers, and the appointees re ceive their places because they belong to the Free Boil, or Barnburners faction. The pub lic interests are made to suffer by this change, and so far, therefore, it ia a public wrong. Messrs. Waterman, Bchermerhorn and Banett, the removed Surperintendents, we are assured have been valuable public officers, and they are turned out just at the time when extra care and experience are necessary on the whole line ol the canals. Tho new appointees are not only inexperienced men, but some of them aro rank froo sailers with strong abolition ten dencies. Norton and Biokies, Superintendent and Weigh Master, are represented to bo of this clnas. cr In Philadelphia the Directors of the American Academy of Music announce that the sum of $50,000 having boon subscribed, which was necessary to sacure the charter for the institution, they have purchased a site for the building on the corner of Broad and Lo cust streets. Before any cootruct for its con struction can be made, it ia necoasary that the sum of $200,000 shall have been subscribed, and they call upon the citizens to aid them. ny - The New Fork Herald has accounts from St. Domingo, which state that American citizens have been pressed into the military service of the Dominican government. The matter waa promptly noticed hy our Consul Mr. Elliott, whom the Dominican authorities refused to rocognise. Mr. Elliott will bring the mattor to the notice of the government at Washington. ty They are builditig a new Opera House ii: New York. Jjff* In Now York on Tbursduy evening the Committed appointed to select tho design for tho medal to be presented to Captain Ingra ham, assembled, and the various designs sent in huving been carefully inspected by the gen tlemen present, the choice fell on the one exe cuted bV Mr. F. She holds out her hand in a protecting altitude towards a boat in the background containing Koszta. Her other hand grasps a spear resting on a pedes- tul surmounted by a cop of Liberty. Behind this figure is represented tiro Bay of Smyrna, the American and Austrian vessels, aut! the hunt containing Koszta, before alluded to. The wholu is encircled by a wreath bearing the following motto: “Do you claim the protection of the U. Editor* :—1 leurn by information from New York to-day, that there is more in terest manifested there in this work, than my correspondent had observed here before he loft us; and that New York capital could certain ly build tho road if oura did not. No ono who is informed can quostion the deep interest in the work felt here and along the line. But the misfortune is, that until re cently, it has not assumed a definite shape.— The apathy apparent, I am sure, was not real. Charleston, though at one time wilfully blind to the advantages of a direct connection with Wilmington and the great Northern highwuy, when affixed, cannot shut her eyes to wlmt now passes before them. With thirty miles of staging on tha Wilmington and Manchester Rail Road in the night and through swamps, she seen one-third of the passengers taking that route. She must know, if she remains in the ml detac she is now in, without another out-let, that the remaining two-thirds, will fol low theirexamplc. The travel will go direct from New York to New Orleans, hy one of the threo routes. 1. By Wilmington and Manchester Rail Road, and thence to Augusta. 2. By North Eastern Rail Road, through Charleston to Savannah by the proposed Ruud, thence either by Central Ilail Rood, to Macon and the Went, or by the air line route to 1'cn- incola. 3. By Wilminington and Manchester Rail Road to Savannah from Brauchville, by the Road, Which will certainly be built if w'e fail in the route from Savannah to Charlestou. 1 take it, the ouestion is, shall thu Wilming ton and Manchester (the deadliest enemy Charleston ever had) or the North Eastern Rail Road, our only sufety valve, be continued on to Savannah ? Can any citizen of Charleston hesitate ? Wi cannot recall the past, but we may make some reparation by attention to the future. ' The route from Savannah to Charleston, ia a link in the chain which must be supplied.— The air line Road to Fensncola and Mobile is as certain to be built as that the enterprize and public spirit of the Savannah people have faded in nothing they have attempted. The Savannah road ia obliged to pay, there is no artery more necessary to the human than there is to the body politic. The agriculturist are more excited on this road than ever before. Already a gentleman of the highest accom plishments, an engineer of experience, nnd a graduate ol West Point, of long service in tho army, a South Carolininn by birth and rearing, and filling a high position among us, has been thought of for tlie Presidency. Every thing is cheering. We sincerely hope Charleston will not be backward, and that wo shall have nn enthusiastic meeting, apd secure the appoint ment of delegates who, while not unmindful ol the country, will be true to the prosperity of ANCIENT CITY. A meeting of citizens for the appointment of delegates to a Convention of the Parishes in terested in the construction of the proposed road was to be held in Charleston last night.
