The Charleston Oattriir of Thursday says t We regret to leant from a letter dated London, the 4th inat n received here yesterday by the Hen He’* mall, that the barqee Leouio, Capt Leslie, bound with a cargo of Sugar from Matansas to St. Peteraburgh has been stranded on the Eynerlana Bank*, off the coast of Holland, and that all on board ware lost— The Ltonie belonged to Mr. H. W. Kuhtmann, of this city, and left Matanaaa on the 28th of July, ar riving at Cowas on the 2d ult., whence she sailed for her destination on the 25th ult., having been kept wailing in the interim for orders. Capt. Leslie was an old and respected ship-master of this port, having formerly commanded tho barque Harriet tf Martha. We might, from our letter-files, fill a column of the News with fetters similar to the above, but this would occupy more space than we have to spare, and besides, in » manor so palpable as the popu. larlty of tho Morning News, it is "uiinncossury to multiply words." Every day brings us tho most gratifying evidences that the course we huve pur sued—in keeping entirely aloofft-om party politics, and in ourpuper a comprehensive, impar, tlal aud tillable chronicle of passing events, alike useful and acceptable to the business man and tho general reader—haa received and continues ton. eeive tho approbation of the great majority o! the public of all classes and of all parties. Not only the prompt remittances and reuowals of our sub scribers, but the rapid oxtousion of our circu lation at homo and abroad, affords the most grali- fyiug’proof of the popularity which haa beun attained by the Jirst cheap, independent daily paper estab lished in Georgia. We buve labored zealously from the first, to muke tho Morning News intrinsi cally worth Its subscription price, and that we have been successful in our alms, we have the most abun- d^ulund flattering evidence :—During the not quiln four years of its existence, the News has attained by far the largest daily eirculatiou enjoyod by any daily paper in the Btato, with an advertising patrou- age second to none of its cotemporaries. In ad dition to this we will state a fact of which we are proud to boast.—From the issue of the Jirst number of the News to the present day, a dun to our sub scribers has never oppeared in its columns.—A higher compliment than tills could uot be paid to any list of subscribers. But we have been le«,d to aay moro on this, to us, interesting subject, than We designed to write. En couraged by the past we ahall not relax our efforts to make the Morning News all its readers can desire convinced as wo are that lhaonly truo way to success is to deserve it. We shall endeavor to hoop up with the improvement and the spirit of the age, and while wc desire uot to be too boastful nor to pro. iniao too much, we may venturo to assure our read ers that, however prosperous we may be, we shall ■over reduce the price of our paper so long as it is considered by our subscribers “ worth mors (Aon Jive times its cost." Edgkcomb, from Savanunh bound to Philadelphia, with lumber, was run into by a vessel supposed to bo a ship, without lights sot, and strange to say the latter vessel kept on her way without attempting to communicate or ascertain what damage had been sustained by tho other vessel. Such conduct remarks the Charleston Standard certainly needs explanation. The schooner has ar rived at Charleston and the Standard says she baa been badly injured, and that one of tho seamen re- ceived injuries during tho eoncussiou which may provo aeriouw. Gkkat Fiax in the Woods at Deteoit.—A grant fire has occurred in tho woods at Detroit, aud at last accounts tho flamea are within a mile of the city. If tho Buffalo party or any other party suppose that they cau obtain thu con of the people of Cuba to ii transfer of the island for the purpose of making a free-negro State of it, or that they can persuade or force the submissive South iuto giving its assent to such a consummation, they are really mistaken. It would be bad enough to see Cuba a frue-urgro colouy under British or Span ish rule, but far worse foi the South to huvo her ad mitted into the Union. When Congress attompts to makes free State of Cuba, it may as well include the slave holding States of the South in tho same grand scheme. [For the Morning News.] Mr. Thompson : Dear Sir— 1 noticed in tho Courier of yesterday momiug an article clipped from the Harrisburg Union, ou tho longevity of individuals, one of whuiu is the subject of this notice. Mrs. Sarah Benjamin, (now familiarly called Gran- uy Beujamiu,) is associated with my earliest recol lections, as the same clear sighted, erect, and sprightly old lady, which she remained up to the lust lime 1 saw her, throe yoars ago. The delivery of Cornwallis's sword to Wushington, is this day as vivid in her memory as if it occurred butyeetordayt aud when d welling upon that exciting scene, ono can observe tho firo of patriotism kindled in her eyes, revealing to what extent, according to her own words ,she would have punished the Tories and Ty rants, as she terms all tho opposera of our cause, nad it been in her power. Private accounts from Olmutz, 2t8h, say that this peaceable result of the Conference was mainly owing to the assurance given by Lord Westmore land, that the British government would not insist on the Porte's accepting the Vicuna Note without modifications, it would at least abstain from advice to tho contrary; and that it would particularly guard against making any pledge of material sup port to tho Sultun Iu cuso lie should doclare war against Russia; that, on the other head, th-.
