LT Col. E. K. Youno Is out iu a letter in which
lie maintains that bis resignation of his directorship
in the Brunswick Kailroud Company, and tho
nouncoment that arrangements were in progress for
union between that compauy and the Savannah
nud Albany Railroad couipajy, were authorised
by overtures made to him hy the Savannah <
pany. Ho certainly fails to make this appear,
1 we think that when t.'io matter is fully explained it
will bo shown that Col Y. has labored under a mis
apprehomion of the facts of the case. The note of
Dr. Bcbkvkn to him in which reference is made to
informal conversations between them, expresses o
willingness to receive propositions from the Bruns
wick company, but it does not appear from Col.
Young’s own showing that any formal proposition
bad been made, or that either purty wne at the
time authorized to uegoliuto an urrangement be
tweonltho two companies.
We regret that any mifundnretauding should have
occurred, or that, Col. Young should have manifest
ed so much feeliug on the subject. If as he think*
tho ptoposed union would ho for the mutual advun
tage of the companies, an arrangemout should be
: caught in a conciliatory spirit. Whether the union i*
o lie clod or uot there is no rouson why a fueling ol
uutagouisinshould exist botween tho friends of the
respective road*.

The Augusta Constitutionalist of Saturday con
tains a list ofthe articles exhibited in the Ladies De
partment of the late Fair ia that city. The list
which fills two columns of the paper, comprises a
great variety of articlaa usefol and ornamental, the
handiwork ofthe ladies, a fact which indicates the
lively interest which they take in whatever is cal
culated to promote the independence, increase tho
wealth, and develops the resources of our State.
The correspondent of the Charleston Courier com
menting on tho display in the Ladies' Department.
The Daughters of Georgia, and their sister
contributors from other quarters, have indeed dis
tinguished themselves for their skill and ingenuity
in all tho arts and departments of female industry
nd accomplishment—-but why need we eulogize
woman or describe the virtues and accomplishment*
ofthe fair daughters of tbe South. Throughout
favored land, and in many a happy independent
home, may be found fair matrons like Lucretiu
among her maidens, or the industrious aud excel
lent woman ao well described by Solomon, dividing
their tasks to a household, and dispensing in
light, and blessing, the graces end accomplishments
that might dazzle a court. The ladies' department
ofthe Fair here, is indeed a beautiful illustration of
the virtues aud merits of out Southern dames and
maidens, combining the useful with the ornamental,
and realizing that happy junction of activity and
grace, which was typified by the ancient myth of
Vulcan and Venus."

working upwards, aud the other downwnids.—
The i.^ginal principle is knowu as "Poller's pa

hand power of two negroes, a halo of 503 lbs. can he

Copper a« a Preventive ok Ciiolkba.—Dr
Hurq, iu tliu Paris Siecle, theorizes on the virluo of
ipper ns a preventive of cholern. He has shown
that of 100,000 workmen engaged in copper mines,
nd in tho various manufactories of copper, from the
orbs in which it is rollud into sheets to the shops
of coppersmiths, nearly all esenpe, and in most cases
all esenpe from the attacks of cholera, although the
disease wus rngiug in their immediate neighborhood
ith fatal violence. l)r. Burq naturally attributes
the immunity to tho action, electric or otherwise, of
■pper, and infers that if other persons would
surround themselves in the mums which they occupy
with a sufficient surface of copper, *uy fifteen or
20 foot of sheet copper, or wour metallic belts of
i|Unre or round pieces of flat copper uud stool, with
curd board between them to prevent immediate
ontuct, they also would ho securo against this tor-
rtldo malady. Tho joint agency of steel lie con-
*iders to lie very useful, but tho chief uud essentiul
metal is copper. When tho disease had declared
itself, ho recommends the use of copper, iu the form
of sail of enpper, or of any other preparution of
thut metal, iu doses which u physisiuti would not re
gard ns dangerous. The rontuning is outircly from
uuulogy. The Doctor bus hud uo opportunity to
test tho value of his theory by practice.—N. F.
The Telegraph and Electricity Applied
to War.—One of tho rccout experiments in Eu
rope is the application of electricity uud the electric
telegraph to the purposes of war. It is staled thut
during the field day ut Olmutz, on the Wilt, at which
tho Emporors of Russia and Austria were present, n
ahum fight on a grand scale, the siege of tho citadel,
including the application of electricity ou the must
approved principles of ignition undcouihustiou, con
stituted the roost important of tho munwuvrcs which
were practiced. A Vienna paper duscrihos threo
omnibus looking vehicles which were in the camp,
euclt containing a complete electric telegraph ap
paratus, with a contrivance for laying an iusulatcd
wire ulong the ground by the mere locomotion of
the vohicle, thn wire being so protected as fo re
main uninjured by the pressure of tho heaviest ur-
tillory passing ovor it. By this menus orders ure to
he instantaneously convoyed from tho Emperor’s
station, nud thut of the chief commander, to troops
nl utmost any distance on the field of the inanoni-
vres. The application of electricity or ninguetism
to tho purposes of war may be no less useful than
they are shown to be by every duy’s experience in
the peaceful arts and pursuits of life.
