But the true cause of the difficulties ia Oppotilion la While Fire Companiet, which bee been apparent from soon after tha organisation o the Oglethorpe Company. Our charter makes our first two officers, by virtue of their office, members ol the Savannah Firs Company. The first year these offieere ware nominated to to Council by tha Savannah Fire Company, and admitted to nil the rights of regular mem bers; tiler lhat they were afraid they would get too many from tba white Companies, end ■hue loose the control of tba Fire Deparunnot, when their I'occupation would be gone.” So they refused to nominate successors to those whose terms of office had expired. Wa told them we did not require it of them; we only wished to bn members of their body to long ae we ware officers or Oglethorpe Com peny, end that ao toon ee our terms of office ex pired our membership iu their Company case- *d. But no! wa wen graeioutly permitted to heee t seel at their meetingx, but nol to eey a wtrd, or to have any vole. We were nut even allowed to vote for tbo officers under whose command wa were to serve, end to whom we were to yield implicit obedience. After appeel- ing to Council to have the matter investigated, for wo felt, end felt deeply, that our character es peace end order loving eitiaens, waa aaaail ed, they passed an ordinance declaring the first two officers of the white Company, now existing, or that may hereafter axial, members of the Savannah Fire Company; and entitled to ail the rights end privilegee of membership. Yet, in the face of this ordinance, I am told that 1 may take my coat at tbeir|meetings, but can take no part ia their proceedings. They raaigu 7 anil why t because Council did nol give them the power to dictate to tba white Companies who they should elect for their offi. cere; “ not giving ue a check upon the nomina tions of the two first officers of the Oglethorpe end Washington Fire Companies, thua forcing upon os, as pauicipanta of our charitable, or corporate fund, those who have no hand iu making it up, or in preserving it, “or it might be unworthy or incompetent aeeociatee!" They aeem to forget altogether that thoec two offieere have a constituency of free, white citi- sens, more numerous by far than their own body, perhaps ae intelligent end ae competent to judge of the fitness end worthiness of their officers. And, as to their charter fund—let me eek how much lies a greet many of their mem bers contributed to it 1 Are they all old mem bers? Have they ell contributed an equal amount ? Wee there not a lime since the for mation of tho fund, when they had not contri buted anything T la not every member they admit open to the seme objections 7 Howav- er, that wee not an object with ua. Wa cere nothing for their fund. We wish to have a voice io their meetings end something to eey in the election of officers who are to be over us; nor do we think we avk more than every citi zen is entitled to. Our object has never been to create disturbances. We have striven to make the Fire Department more efficient, end we feel satisfied that since tire organization ol our company, we hava always dona our duly aa firemen. We shell coptinue to do so, and we have no idea that tba Department will be rendered lees efficient by the resignation of a portion of tha Savannah Fire Company.— Thera ere plenty uf gentlemen in Savannah who ere willing to occupy their pieces imme diately when their resignations ere received by Council. „ JOHN OLIVER.
