An awful deed was done oo Saturday night, 5th inat., in the town of Veetel, about eight 1 miles from this village. • The hearts, not only of men, but of women, aeem to have grown harder and more callous. It appears that a Mrs. Winans, an old resident of Vestal, after a widowhood of some years, married a man by the name of Stephen Crane. Soon after their marriage, a disagreement occurred, and up to the fatal hour of Crane’s death they continued to quarrel. It is rumored that at one time Mr. Crane was " bought off” by his generous wife, and then told that he might depart forever. M;a. Winans had a daughter who lately got married also to a young man whoee name we could not learn. To this daughter, Mrs. Wi nans, (alias Crane,) assigned her interest in the home in which they reside. Mr. Craoe, af ter au absence ol some time from home, re turned oo Saturday, aud atlrmpted to enter what ho considered his own house, but was warned off by bis son-in-law* On persisting to enter, he was told that ifho did, he would be certainly shot. He then left, but returned again in a state of intoxication, it ia aaid, at tempted to enter the house, and was again re- pulsed. He pertinaciously insiatet| in his de sign ; then tbe wife.took, primed and charged ~ pistol, and told the young man tu do hisdu- /. In another moment, poor Crane was num bered among the dead. The ball pasted through his head, entering his forehead atid lodging behind the ear. At first, it was thought this was the only wound indicted ; but after examining the body his head was found to contain several severe geshes—indeed, horri bly mutilated. The murderer is now in custo dy Binghamton. Republican^ 7th iutt. rr . Peerful Riot at Wlgwn. Tho discontent prevailing among the colliers and operatives at present on the otrike in Lan- cashire baa broken out in desperate riots at Wigan. On tbe evening of Friday 28lb, a meeting of the representatives ol the employ* era was held at the Royal Hotel, Wigao. wheo u was resolved that the operatives should have the offer to return to their work within a fortnight, at the former scaleof wages and if this were not acceded to the mines would be closed permanently, until the meu would be starved into eubmiieion. On thia becoming kaown to the miners, they proceed- I to smash the windows of the hotel, and to mob” theemployers, and at length proceeded • acu of greater violence. The police, about a dozen in number, were totally inefficient egainst the crowd a thous and strong.—There wae an extra police force, in the shape of fifty constables specially en rolled, but on the first appearance of danger these worthies turned and Aed! This encour- ed the riotera to act pretty much aa they . eased, and their pleasure was to pillage the stores, and to set fire to the dwellings of their □ployera. The Royal Hotel was first sacked, and set fire, and the drinks found at the bar and in the oeUara, were distributed among the crowd. Next the inob rushed along the various streets extinguishing the lamps, and amaahidg the windows id which were lights. The Police station, the Viotoria Hotel, sod the Clarence Hotel, were, then attacked and more or less damaged. Mr. Taylor’s Mansion, (of tbe firm of Taylor & Brothers, cotton spinners) woe beseiged front and rear, and left such a wreck that next day tbe doors and windows bad to be boarded up. At this juncture a cry of” tbe soldiers are coming,” bad the effect of causing the riotera to run, hut finding it a false alarm they proceeded to the bouse and factory of “ . Johnson, cotton spinner, which they ipeedilv gutted. . ( Mr. Johnson and hia fsbitiljr fortunately es caped by the rear, while tbe ruffiaas were en tering the house from tba street.
