The appearance of the country, except la the valley of the Rio Graade, is that of a vast sandy desert. As far a* the eye caa reach, you behold nothing but broad sandy plains, with no signs of vsgetation, save the dry and withered "gania gmsB," which never grows more than two inches high—high hills and higher mountains, with summit* ss bare as Ball Peak or Monument Mouulatu, with no gurgling rivulet or bubbling spring to refresh tho wearied and thirsty traveller—no tree or even shrub spreads its arms of " living greeu " to protect him, for a moment, front tho forvM rays mi the sun.— Every object, eliher animate or inanimate, seems lu »ympnihixe with the dreary desolation that sur round* it. The Rio Grand* it tha only river in the Territory, and iu car rent Is as rapid as the Mis souri ; Its banka and bottom are composed of quicksand, so that it* bunks are eontiuuaily wash lug away, nod Its channel continually changing. I have known it to Change so much in two hours, aa to render it extremely dangerous to life and property to ford it. The fertile portion of the valley of the river is front one te two miles in width ; and this long and narrow section contains nine tenths of all the popu lation and all the wealth of the Territory. Aa it seldom rains in thl# region, they ara obliged to fer tiline tba soil by irrigation. Tha principal product# are corn, wheal, beans, ubas, red peppers and melons. I have not seen a potato since 1 arrived hare. The mineral produc tions are vnrird and abundant, and salt can be ob tained by merely shoveling it up. Iron, coni, copper and lend abound in inexhaustible quantities ; but thu inland position of tlm country, tho first scarcity of water und timber, ami the want of proper means of transportation, render it not only Impracticable, but utterly impossible, iu the present condiiinn ol things, to work the mines with any degree of profit io tile captolists, or of comfort to the operative.— But the greatest difficulty to contend with is the nu merous and powerful tribes of wild and savage lu- dians that infest the borders of the Territory. They live a roviqg, reckless life, continually in tho saddle, traveling in bands of one to five thousand warriors, hovering sis adjacent hills and mountain*, aud watching an opportunity to rob the unguarded husbandman of his flocks and herds. Their horsvs ■ runs fleet as the wind, and their onslaught Is os bloody and ruthless as it is sudden and unnxpacted. . ill now give you soato faint iuslght into the moral and religious character of the Mexican por- of the population. Inspiraiiou loaches us that there were a number of the tribes of Israel that were lost; and if it means that they were lost to all sense of the decencies of humanity, then 1 aift-of opiuion that this people is one of those tribes, and that the Lotd has lost track of (hem, or that this Territory is not within his jurisdiction I At all events, he does not at present, and 1 beliovo he never will recognise them as bis creatures, judging from the total depravity aud hesMted ignorance ol >11 of them. It is but one year since the first school vas established here, aud that has had hut a sickly growth. There are vary few ol the mou who can end or write, and to ace a woman that can do ei ther, is a curiosity. They live iu houses, one story high, aud made of mml, with mud floors, and a chair or hodatead In doors is quite as much a novelty u* a plow, wagou, or scythe is out of doors. They have no knowledge of the use of tools, and notwithstand ing tke excellont aud unbounded pasture lands, there pound or\butter or cheese ninde iu the Tern- d it is seldom thi . for ibe reason that their cowa. Thoy use no leaven in making bread, and, therefore, you cau judge of ita palatablenrss; and they make no pastry—thry never salt their meat, but cut it into thin slice*, and dry it by the aun: and when dry, It resemble* chips, both in taste ai d appearance. They keep largo flocks of sheep, but they make no use of wool, cxeopt for hods und pil lows. It would, perhaps, amuse you to stand in my of fice door and look out upon the Plaza and observe • he dress and iiutiucrs of the women us they pats, Their dre*«ls composed ol a skirt of common mus lin, with neither sleeves uur waist, aud extending lo just above the ancles. In the place of a bonnet, ilmy wear a"r«bosa"—a thing similar to a lady's long shawl, and when thoy choose to bo particularly modott, thoy use It to cover the nakedness of their botoms, which ia uot often however. Tiioir per- mmiuI habits ara coarser and tnorg detestable thun the brutes of the forest, and the women, us a mass, are, without exception of condition, whether mur- ried or unmarried, the vilest kind of prostitutes. Mothers, without shame, sell the favors of their daughters, and husbands with esgnriies* accept the price of their wives' debaucheries from the ban a of all who choose to pay the tribute. It is impossible to conceive of a state of tucinty more degraded or sclfahaitoonod; and although I regrotto write it, there are inauy American lawyers nnd merchants Imre who keep their mistresses openly and without shnrna. disgracing Slot only themselves und the com mercial and professional character, hut debusing the Yaukees iu the eyes of the natives to acuudiliiui equally as base us .hemselves. Thu religion of the country is the blackest kiud of Catholicism, aud it has becu the policy of the priest-hood lo keep the peoplo in a condition of the most supreme ignorance and abandoned supemti. lion. They have bami taught to sanction the vilest practices of inunorult., from their childhood tolhe close of life, aud to tolerate the roost heinous ui.d umuitigutod crime; indeed, they heliave Hint it only requires the intercession of tho priest with tha Almighty, to procure a purdnn of villuiuy tliul is blacker thun the scum of hull; and yet, hy the treaty Outwent tho United States and Mexico, tlieso saiuu people arc made "free and enlightened citizens me Amoricau Union." But the more 1 write upon this subject, the more difficult it bucouies for tun it give a correct idea ol the extent of the native tlegrn- dalion, and 1 will close this part of the subject by quoting the remark of Johu Randolph, of Viriinia that the people hem are a " nation of blanketed robbers aud rebuia'd prostitutes," But this is view of the musses to which thero nro occasional exceptions. As an instance, 1 will givo the family •>f Dr. Junn Guteridge, j^lo which iny brother James married. They are all well educated, and J sine's wife is as genleul and amiable a woman as your own Mnrv. I have said that the houses hero are mud huts, but thero are a few of American build, and my brother'* is one of these. Ills house is GO feel square, with a portal surrounding the outside iu a kind of colon nude and a placeta on tba inner centre, 30 fuel square, withe kind of portal around it,—"famftisn.'' The rooms are all arranged around the placeta, and ttin furniture and intorior ornaments huvo an uir of nnutnoss und olngauce which would surprise you, when you consider the great distunce of transporta tion from the States of all si'ch articles. James hits a store, grist-mill and • largo farm, all in operation, lie harvested this year 800 buihels of wheat, worth $3 per bushel, and 8,000 bushels ofcorn, worth $1,85, besides oat*, beans, barley, Ac. Ho also planted an acre of Irion potatoes this year, for the first time, from which he hopes to savo some aeod with which to raise larger crops next year, nod, if possible, in duce others to itniiato his example. Pork -is worth 35 cent* per pound, ami James has fifty fine shouts. James has heretofore owned a "train," and been what is called a Santa Fe trader, out of which bu*i ness he has saved $30,000; but he says that liis farming is so lucrative that he shall abuuduu trad ing ana devote his whole time to farmiug. A good farmer can double his mouey every four years in this place, as lauds are very fertile and the price of produce high. I am engaged in professional practice, and District Attoruey of tba Third Judicial District. My busines Is extremely lucrative, owing to the f ront informality that has been observed herotoforo ii inukiug deeds and other instruments rolating to liens ami transfers of real estate. Funs are veiy high, and 1 never charge less than $35 for making a deed or any paper relative to real | never less than $100 for an argument cept Justices' Court*. But I do out mean to live ulwuys in this wilderness of demented and besotted human brutes, where refinement is exceptional, aud all the batter instincts of the heart find uo sympathy or comrunniou. Adios. Your affectionate brother, S. A. H. Irom tha Washington Star.] The tteumie of Commodore Coe* Information has been received here, Irom which it is judged that Commodoie McKeever’s orders that tho Jamestoum should uot be moved from her an chorage at Buenos Ayres (wbe reher presence was necetsary for tho protection of then pressing Ameri can interests,) were brokeu by the commander of the Jamestown (U. 8. sloop of war) under the ploa that it was necessary to calk her, which bad no foundation, as is proved by his subsequent opera tion! with her. He moved her to Montevideo, where she lay eight days before she took Coe ou board. Coe sold bis squadron for $480,000, of which ho pocketed for himself $308,000. While all ou shire woro execrating him for hi* treachery, tho commauder of the Jamtetotcn took him on board of his ship fur protection; but was compelled •uni off her soou again, by iho remonstrances* of other officers of tha squadron, aud the directions of the Untied States Minister there, Mr. Hclieuck. CLARKSON. Tho Wife of Joltn Mftchol. Wo find the following truthful allusion to Mrs. Mitchel, wifo of the Irish exito expected to bo soon w ith us, in the Empire, of Sidney. " The gifted aad beautiful wife of the Irish exile, John Mitchel, arrived here oo Thursday, with hrr fine fkamily of six children, ou her way to join her brave burimod in freedom, io a free country. ‘ In the present generatioa, perhaps, Providence has not united a man and woman more worthy of each other—a Itoroia* wife and a horn husband. We know it well from eye-witnesses, how the in domitable energy and courage of that lion-hearted innn was triod in the flnry furnaco of revolutionary excitement. Well we know, too, upon tho same au thority, the slow forco of circuin-tanccs that urged him, like Hampden, stop hy step, from a quiet country life iuio the front rauk—into the foremost position—into the very gap of desperation. The faraioo with which socini and political misrule had inoculated that unhappy land, his native country, came at last to the inhuman crisis, iu which mother* fed upon their own offspring, as in the horrors of besieged Jerusalem ; aud wo bavo heard how he mado a lour in the Provinces to witness for himself tho appalling accnoa of pestilenco und famine, walking among thorn liko " tho tuau that had s*m hell"—tho and and thoughtful Danin—and thru returned to Dublin, a desperate, one-ideaed man— the leader of a revolutionary niovemeui. Wo do not, at this distanre, pretend to offer an opinion upon his revolutionary project; merely stain facts, a* they have often been narrated, und assign the motives which propelled them into thut career, in which ho ufterwards advanced with unflinching resolution between the bayonet nnd the jihbet. But how must the heart of that young wife, the mother of u brave man's children, have been tried In its utinnst corn in tho conflict bntweun affection, uiiitad with maternal solicitude, and what she con ceived to fie her duty to her hutlmud and lior coun> try. Nobly, wo aro assured, she stood the fiery or deal, without a word or a sigh to cross liisstcrn pur- l»os#, aud even participating in the balo of his in tense excitement. We understand it is (he intention of some Msb- men in this city to present n respectful address of congratulation to Mrs. Mitchel before her departure, believing, very truly, that they will hardly look upon a nobler spirit in a female form.
