DEATH OP TIIK ROBIN.
BT MBI. KMBLIWB I. BBITM.
From hla sweet banquet. 'mid the per tamed clover,
A robin laired end suns;
Never the voice of hippy bird or lover
Such peals of gladness rung.
Lone Echo. loitering by the distant hill aide.
Or hillng in the glen.
Caught up. with thirsting lip, the tide of sweetness,
Then bido it liow Again.
The summer lir was flooded Kith the mnalo;
Winna held their breath to heir;
And blushing wild-bowers hung their heeds, enhmoted,
To list thst " Joyitnce uleaf."
Juat|h|«, from neighboring covert rudely ringing,
** Broku forth discordinttoand;
And Wily fan lor, from his ttinbnsh springing,
Gited tigofly around.
Still upw-ird, through the air thit yet km thrill leg .
To hii melodious ley.
One intlant longer, on i trembling pinion,
_ . . The rohiu cleared his wiy,
But, ah, the death-shot rankled in hie bosom—
Ills life of song was o'er!
**“- “ hie heavenward pathway,
A sudden silenoe chilled the heart of Nature-
Loaf, blossom, bird and bee,
Boomed each, in startled hush, to mourn the pausing
Of that sweet u Instrelsy.
And Echo, hrefethless, io her secret dwelling,
Like love-lorn maid, in vain
Waited and UsteneJ long, to catch the accents
She ne'er would hear agalu.
Oh, bird! sweet poet of summer woodlands!
How like thy lay to those
Of tuneful bards, whose song* begun in gladneaa,
Have oft the aaddest olose.
Thai, many a strain ot human love and rapture,
Toured from a fond, full heart,
liath been, in one wild moment, hushod forever
By aorrow'a fatal dart.

Wcatoru.Prnlrlea on Fire.
Wo have accounts of groat damage done by firr,
in ditlrrent parts of this State and Illinois. Ti.e
prairies have born sot on Arc, thoughtlessly or by de
sign, und the unueu.il dry weather had prnnared the
grass and the loaves 10 as to furnish it fit for the
flume*. AJuw union north of Toronto, Livingston
County, fences wero laid waste, and even tint stnldcs
burns ai’o dwelling houses wore* endangered. Not
only the grass of the prairitis, hut the woods were
destroyed by it—tlm leaves lying thick on theground
und the long drought having rendered them nusv of
ignition. 'The fence enclosing the farm of Rev. Jhn.
G. Vincent was entirely consumed, leaving his en
tire crop ofjtheat and corn without protection. Mr.
Edward null was n sufferer ; Herbert and Belcher
had tin ir entire leuces consumed, or rendered value,
less, ami it was with difficulty they saved their dwel
lings. Mr. Ahrahom Field had hit fences, stables
auil burn consumed—the lutter continuing Ins now
crop of wlieui und farming utensils. Olliers were
also injured.
From the Bhclbyvlllu Hpeetator wo loam that in
tihelhy County many farms were left almost entirely
unenclosed, und the dwellings were saved with diffi
culty :
“ The fencing of Dr.Riggs, Mr. Blackburn, Mr.
Anderson, Mr. Hmcnr, Mr. Terry, Mr. Duncan, Mr.
Moore, and J. B. Marmaduko, mid mmiy others
whose names we did not learn, was materially dam
aged. We were also informed that the loss wu*
very gi talin the neighborhood of Mouire Hilton's, in
Taylor Township. It is supposed tliut the prairie
worn firm! by hunters from a distunen, who wnr
camping here, wiili u view or killing the game in iu
HUdeuvors to escano the fire.” ■
. Tlic()<|uawka (111.; i'laiiidealer says:
"Serious loss bus been sustained by many of
farmers in the lower part of the county, Just below
Warren, and in the Johnson aolilnmenl, from the
prairies cuicliing fire, lu some iiiMuncps whole fields
nnd stacks of grain have boeu entirely destroyed, us
well us the fencing. Among ihe piiucipul sufferers
nro Matthew Houghton, Alex. Rankin, Hr., Henry
