The watch was brought to our publication oilke before ten o'clock, and we bad the satisfaction of returning it to tbe owner, when he called at 3 o'clock iu the afternoon, about tbe same time that wa returned to anotlior gentleman a valu able article of jewelry that had been lost a day or two before. The dedication took place yesterday. A large number of ladiea and gentle men wero present on the occasion, which was ren dered highly interesting and impressive by tbe elo quent and appropriate address of Rev. J. P. They made, as usuul, a very fine appearance. w* Le iu iful piece of wurkmtnsliip, which, as Wn learn from newspaper notices of it, attracted much attention at the late Dublin exhibition, has, in sharing the.fortunes of its designer and manufactur er, Mr. HxaNABD Sullivan, found its way to our city; and may be seen at tbe establishment of Mr. James Sullivan on droughton-Macet, where its owner is now employed. It was designed us the model of a Cenotaph to ho orectod, iu tbe city of his birth, to the memory of Moobr. As a specimen of lundiwork it is chasto and liaantiful both in its design and execution; whilst in its conception Mr. 8. has most appropriately win bodied the idea that originated it. It is made of German silver, and differing in every particular from the legitimate liue of Mr. Sllli. van's business, it tuny bu regarded ns a striking il lustration of tho iiilluunco which the great "Indus trial Exhibitions," (mvo luid iu developing talent mu I ingeuuity in many who before bad but few, and in some instances, perhaps no aspirations to ke distin guished either in Mechanics' or the Arts. New Pilot Hunt. We visited yesterday tbo shipyard of Mr. II. F. Willink, Jr., and inspected a new Pilot boat which lie ia building, for Messrs. James Kino A D. 8. Daniels, of this city. She is one of the handsom est models wo have ever aeen, and ship builders who have visited liur pronounce her equal, if not not superior, to any craft of her class evar built iu the ship-yards of the north. She is to be called tiie John R. Wilder,\in Compliment to one of our Pa. vunuah merchants. The extreme length of her deck is 63 feel; her keel is 5. r >Mjl*net in length, 16 feet beam ; 7 feet 10 inches hold, and 64 tons bur den. She is throughout copper fastened, nud built entirely from nativo live oak. She will be the |ur- gost pilot boat on our river. We learn that she will be cor.iploto In about a ftirinlghi, when sho will be launched upon her dostiued element. Wo wish her a long and prosperous career- View ofMnvnnnnb. We are indeht cd to Co], P. 8. Sibley, for a copy of?,* View of the City of Savannah,"drawn by Mr- F.Cebvb AU,and lithographed by Mr. R. H. llo\v- BLL, of i his city. Tho drnwing was made from the Atepple of the Exchange, and present* a front view of Bay street, with Bull street in perspective. Ftoin the point of view we look down upon the city, and though only the roofs of many cf the buildings are to be seen, we are at once struck with the fidelity of tbe picture. "Tho Maiden in the Wood," as Miss Ilaasrxa is pleased to call our beautiful city, is vi vidly before us, so thut wo find' no difficulty in re- cognlaing the principal public butlJings, the parks, squares hnd blocks, uud oven many of the private residences. Asa work of art, this view of Savannah ia highly creditable, both to Mr. Ckkvbau, the draughtsman, who has long enjoyed the reputation of being an ac complished landscape painter, and to Mr. Howkll, tbe lithographer, to whom we are indebted for the introduction of that brauch of art in our city, and whose skill uud industry in that and kindred arts, have supplied a wunt long fell by our citizens. Wn understand that only a limited edition of tho View of Savannah hut been printed, aad that III' drawing has hocu removed from the atoue to make room for other works. Those, therefore, who desire to secure a copy, should apply a. once to Mr. How bll, or at the Bookstore of Col. S. 8.8iblkv. Western Character*, or Type* of Border Life ia the Western States. By J. L. “— J. 8. Rsdfiold. As has been well remarked, the author of this book has entered a rich, and hitherto little cultiva ted field, wheoce he baa gleaned a few good sheaves- We have had an abundance of romance about lo- dian warfare and border life, but not enough truthftil delineation. Hence these sketches of the Indian, the voyageur, the pioneer, the ranger, the regulator, the justice of .(ho peace, the pedlar, the schoolmaster, the schoolmistress and the politician, ore very acceptable, because they are drawn from life. The pencil of Darliy has aided tho pen of the author in giving lair representations of those several Types of Border Life in the Western States." Merkland, or Beif-fia'riA**. By tbs author ef "Mar garet Maitland." New York: Stringer Jt Townsend. This is a novel of the highest order of merit. The plot is probable, the characters varied and eminent ly true to uature, and the moral is useful and iiopres' ■ive. It is a tale of Scottish life, so well told that tho reader involuntarily imagines it to be a truthful family history. If thn publishers are fortunate nnouglE to secure many works of equal merit for their‘library of Standard Novels," the success of tho enterprise cannot be doubtful. New York : D. Ap pleton ft Co. The title of this volume is ingeniously calculated to excite curiosity. The contents are five stories named respectively " Edith," " An Early Day Life,' "The Widow," "Old Maidens vertut Marriage,' and " Episode in the Life of a Woinnn of Fashion," The anonymous author is doubtless Ihe " idle wo man," and the " busy moments" were those during which she elaborated these amusing fictions. Life of Benjamin Rnbl. Haydon, Historical Painter, from hit Autobiography utul Journals. Edited by Tom Taylor, Esq. New-York: Harper and Bro thers. This, says the able reviewer of the N. Y. Commer cial, is a reprint from the London edition of a work liich has been dm theme nf successive elaborate articles in most of the British reviews aad mags- ds for months past. Tho interest in regnrd to it extended lo this country, and the book lias be in so general a subject of conversation in literary circles, that now au American edition is procur able at a moderate price, every one who pretend* acquaintance with currout literature will feel hound to reed it. As a pointer, Haydon is little known in this country, and even in England bis repu- has not extended beyond a select and limited circle. He had few eleiueuts of popularity. His talent wan rotlective, philosophical uad profound, and lie would probably have mado au admiruble professor of rostliolics, although ho was an incom plete painter. One of the best English critics, has remarked that his gnuius must bo sought rather in his writings than in his pictures, aud that ho belong ed to llte class of Goethe and Hazlitt, that is, to Ihe highest class of reasoner* upon art rather than of artists. His best pictures were a "Solomon," an Entry of Christ iuto Jerusalem," which he exhibit J iu 1820, and "The Ramshineiit of Aristides," which was exhibited ill 1846. Some of his artistic conceptions wero highly fantastic. In one of his pictures representing tho Apostlos, ho introduced * portrait of Voltaire as Judas. It will always bo re membered to the credituf his judgment that he wus the first lo proclaim tho genuineness of the antique marbles removed from Greece by Lord Elgin. lie was in tbe habit of keeping a journal of his daily reflections, observations and experience, and at the time of hia death, this journal occupied twenty-six folios. From theso, Mr. Taylor has condensed the two duodecimo volumes under notice. Haydon was on iutiuiote terms with Wordsworth, Juffrey, Lamb, Keats, Talfourd and olhor literary colebrilies, and had frequent interviews with the Duke of Wellington, and Sir Robert Peel, of whom many interesting notices are scattered through bis diary. But his individual life la the most deeply in terosting part of tho narrative. It ia intensely painful to observe how an artist of so much gonius, and who really accomplished so much that worthy of admiratiou, suffered the tortures of pecu niary ombarrassmeut, and was at last driven to sui cide " In tbe sixty-first year of his age, after forty two years of studies, striviogs, conflicts, successes, imprisonments, appeals to Ministers, to Parliament, o patrons, to the public, to self-illusions, and dis appointments." Il will be recollectod that in the year 1841 a schooner called the Creole was taken possession of by a number of slaves, of whom there were one huudred and thirty-fivo on board, while ou a voyage from Norfolk to New Orleans. The tie- grow# took the vessel iuto Nassau, where tho British authorities refused to reduce the mutineers to obe dieuce, or to deliver them up, or to aid the officers and owuers iu recoveringpossessiou of the schooner. The result was that the slaves gainod their free- dum, and wero lost to their masters. A domain! was immediately mado upon the British Government for indemnity ou behalf of the owners. Mr. Web ster instructed Mr. Everett to press the claim, and a correspondence on the subject look place botween Mr. Everett and Lord Aherdeeu, and subsequently between Mr. Webster aud Lord Ashburton ; bnt tho British negotiators resisted the demands upon the grouud that the authorities of ihe Bermudas were uot responsible for the acts of the negroes, and were not bound to delivor them up as mutineers in the abseuco of anv treaty embracing the caso. Lord Ashburton declined admitting the claim as a subject fur negotiatiun iu • -e correspondence which preced ed the conclusion of the treaty of 1843, but it is alleged bold out expectations that it would be sub sequently adjusted by ins government. The owners of the slaves have unw applied to the joint Commis sion sitting in Loodon for tbe edjudicetion of claims for the indemnity which they could not obtain by eid of diplomacy. The amount of the demand is $60,000, wilh interest.—iY. Y. Courier. FUNERAL INVITATIONH.
