Tho distinguishod character of the writer, as well as tho chapters of his history which have appeared in the papers, have created an unusual dogree of interest iu tho work, which as will be seen uy the prospectus, is to he circulated exclusively by subscription. We cannot give our readers (a better description of the "Thirty Years View," than by copying the following from the prospectus of the publishers; “ During the Inst thirty years, tlioro lias boon no important public measure iu which this active and distiuguisliod statesman has not taken an able and decisive part, and been familiar with tho influences whethor secret or public, which liavo urged for- wurd or opposed each. One can ecarcely run over in memory, without emotion, the long list of statesmen, and warriors, and civil ians, who, iu their public careor, have boon brought in contact with him, uud whoso actions will come to notice in theso pages ; of whom ilio author speaks iu subordination to his great design of illustrating the character of our institutions, which arn new and complex—the first of their kind, and upon the fate of which the eyes of the world are now fixed. Happi ly the sum of his experience, the result of his obser vations, through the trials which our system has passed, have convinced him of Us ezcellenu, and inspired a wish to contributo to its porinuneuce. "Tho work will be completed in two volumes, tho first of which will bo published early iu the yoar 1851, and will be brought dowu to tho closo of the adiuiuiatratioo of Geueral Jackson, aud will thus form a complete work by itself, containing about •even hundred double column, royal octavo pages, aud a superbly engraved portrait of Nonalor Ben ton. Liortnino Rods —The protection of buildings from the destructive coutact of electricity, seems, notwithstanding the many improvements that huvw been introduced and adopted in tho last few years, •till to attract the attention of both the scientific and mechanical, with advantage, not only iu the attractive properties of tho conductors but in the • inode of securing the rods to as to iusure their effectiveness. We were shown yesterday a pattern of " Otie’ Patent Insulated Lightning Conductor," (of which Mr. E. E. Lee, who may be found at the City Hotel, is the general Agent.) This arraugemeut combines what are considered |he great requisites in a lightning conductor, via.: perfect insulation and continuity of the rod, wbil» the iiumcroua’pointsby which it is surmounted "teud to prevoot violent oxplosions and cause a rapid and sileut discharge of the electric fluid.” Beside the points at the top, there .are receiving point: placed along the rod at intervals of six feet. Tho meeting of merchants last night, at the " Southern aud Western Reading Room," was suc cessful. Arrangements were mode on the spot to finish the Tennessee, end she is to be put on the line from here to Charleston and Savannah at once.— Tim Tennessee will be very (loot, and make the en tire trip from here to Savannah, stopping at Charles ton, sooner than the Palmetto now mekgs her trips to Charleston. We beliove the business that would grow up be Iweeu the two cities, ou the establishment of direct steam communication, would sustain n weekly line of first class ships, sharing as the/ would the travel with the New York aud Philadelphia lines. Much of this travel will be lost by the detention and incon venience which must result from touching at Charles tan. To tost the value of the passenger list from this point to Baltimore and Washington, the trip should he. made direct from port to port. We hope however, that “lL*e first step of Baltimore towards Savannafa" will be encouraged, and that even with •he disadvantage, to which we have alluded the re- It may bfi such as tyMcoursgu ( tbe projectors to 0 - * Storm Bermuda. Late accounts from Bermuda, to the 3d inat., have been received at New York. A northeast gale bad prevailed at the island for five successive days, and lathe harbor and sound, the water* were in such a turbulent state as to res. der communication between different parte of tbo colony quite bsssrdous. Upon the land, the destructive effects ofthe storm are but too visible. The yooug crop of onions, In its most tender state, has, in many places, been ruinously blighted : and the advanced crop of pota toes, both sweet aud Irieh, are completely blacken ed, and the further growth entirely chocked. The fruit crop has come in for n share of the havoc bushels of oranges, shaddocks, and grape-fruit, wanting only n few more weeks to bring tbera perfection, are lying on the ground ; and a number of banana trees, and other delicate occupants ofth orchard, are either uprooted or rudely wrung off from their stems. The yellow fever had nearly disappeared from Bermuda. The disease still exists, but in a milder form at Hamilton. ,* Sailing of the Baltic7^-U. 8. Irish Freedom.—Johu Mitchel has announced hit intention to publish n weekly nowapapor, de voted to the cause of Irish freedom. The first number is to be issued on the 31st of December and Mr. Thomas F. Meagbor is to be one of its ed tors. Tbo Mitshol Club called upon the exile on Fri. day, aud presented him with an address of welcome. This is not hall' so effectual for saving to turn, in the same manner, tbo stop cock at tbo meter. This shuts the gaa off at its head to such extent as will permit merely a steady flame at the burner, of such brilliancy as may be wished. Shipwreck and 'Suffering at Ska.—Tho London Shipping Gazette of Nov. 16th, contains the particulars of the loss of the California Packet, bound from Sligo for Now York, with emigrant pas- neugers. She left Rroadhaven November 3d, and *t twelve that night sprung aleak, whon about one hundred miles off the coast. Every exertion whs made to keep the ahip afloat, by throwing over the cargo, nnd even the females plied the pumps, butsho final ly settled down, and thoso ou board took to tho boats. In the long boat there wore thirty-seven per is, only six of whom wore men, without compass sail, ono blanket and two onrs; the life-boat had tWenty-two souls, and tin gig the captain, the owner, aud a part of tho crew. The latter bont wus picked up by a vessel. The others woro four days and nights on the ocean, during which time fourteen of (hum died, principally children, for want of water, there not beinga drop on board. After tlioy reached the laud, throe others died from tho privations which they had endured. The Mormon* of Salt Lake in Trouble.— The Mormons appear to have the ill-luck of getliug into trouble with thoir neighbors wherever they go. Thc>, as a last resort, wont to Salt Lake Valley, but even there they have got into difficulty with tho Green River traders. A loiter from Fort Larnmio ss>J : A company of men ordered out from the valley took several prisoners, who aro confined to hard la bor, in chains, in the vnllny—shot one mau—drove off a number of horses aud cattle into the valley— took possession of Bridger’* fort and effects, and taxed ouo person $*2000 in lieu of taking him prison- Thoso facts I huve from a Mormon, and learn thut they were done on account of sundry minde- inoauorn, and a violation of tho right of lorry priv ileges on Groon river. I do not pretend to judgo of the matter, and do not wish to prejudice the mind of auyoue, hut let tho fnets be properly or officially placed before the public. A very murderous combat took place some time ncc, near or at Bridger’s Fort. Two cooks, dis agreeing about the manner of cooking ccrtaiu meats, from severo and abusive language camo to tilowa, when one of them drew hia pistol nud shot the other in the breast, just holow the heart. The hitter loll, then rising, drew his butcher knife and stabbed his opnouent three times through tho hoart, when both fell almost immediately beside each other and died. This is rather a siugular mode of terminating a tri fling difficulty, but it is tho shortcut method in vogue in this the far West. Money Matters, Trade, dec. New York, Saturday, Dec. 10. The money market isgrowiug quietly but steudily easior, and rates have a downward tendency. Tlioro is greater readiness of negotiation of long diitoii paper, and all prime grades aro quickly sold nt ton per cent, discount, and in some instances ut uine. The (urge privato banking houses discount for their customers at seven very liberally, and the hanks aro gradually expanding. They roached their lowest point of contraction on tho 13tb November, since when they have been freely increasing their loans and discounts. The stock market shows a considerable advance for tho woek. There is morn money at the com mand of operators, but it is not beiug availed of to tar its full extent. Tito feeling of a modcruto bun) oncy prevails, limited, however, by the shadow of a possibility that something or other io the state of European affairs may give matters here a different turn, nipping the improvement in the bud. Should England be drawn iutothewar with Russia, theu, it is argued, ibia market would suffer, as the financial relations of the London aud New York market are too inti mate for oue to be disturbed without the other. In 1818, wbeu Europe was in a geueral revolu tlou, this market was flooded by continental goods of every description, and sold nt prices which ruined the trade, for that season, of the regular importer. Another geueral revolution there would be attended with the same effects ; and as tills fear has prevailed among our merchants for many mouths past, and operated strongly, combined with the effect of a stringent money market at the usual period of giving out orders for spring goods, we may reasonably suppose that moderate supplies of goods will only be forthcoming in the beginning ofthe uew year. The continued drain in England of its gold for tho contiueut and Asia, is unquestionably an omiuous feature. The contraction of business there has made money easier, hut 4 Ml percent, for discount: a high rate for the Londou market. Shu is un 'fling less of the raw material, aud is exporting is to Australia, both of which facts liavo curtailed the demand for inouey. On tho other hand, she is importing more largely than ever of fore' and flour, requiring large cash advancer, a receiving back rapidly her large investments of money in the Australian trade. Gold is being boardod on the continent to a great extent. The East India trudo requires more specie than usual and less goods, owing to the difficulties iiijCbina. War with Russia in Euglaud would be more popular than profitable, and its statesuinn are adverse to it, if it can bo avoided ; and Russia hus not credit sufficient to enter with publio success into war with Frsuce aud Euglaud united. It will, therefore, be seen that she will back out of the war with Turkey in some way, but so as to savo appearances ; and it is the policy of both France and England to plan a retreat for her with all apparent kouar. Therefore we thiuk our Waii-stroet friends who think there may be financial troublo here from a derangement of the English money market conse quent ou her being embroiled with Russia, may calm their minds, aud operate in peace and c* fidonce. Cotton ii shipped very moderately from this pi... for the aoasou, usually ua active one ; the principal sales are for home consumption, which is groator than usual at this period. The maintenance of the rates of sterling exchange facilitates the execution ofshippiug orders, as a de cline in those rates necessitates higher price* ofthe articles shipped, while a roadmens of sale offoreigu exchanges enables lower prices to be accepted. The Oric&ACoMiqujcCoNM'iRAToR*.— 1 The trial of the persous charged with being concerned iu conspiracy to assussinate Louis Napolcou was going ou at lall accounts. Tho conspiracy appears to have originated with a Frenchman, Mr. Jules Alix, the so-called inventor of the amall telegraph. He had prepared cannon of zinc plate*, covered with *~T canvas, strongly bouad with cords. After disposing of Bonaparte, his body was to he carried through Paris, barricades to be erected, the republic proclaimed, and Blanqut placed at iu head. This was ou the 5th of June. On tho 7th they were to deelsre themselves en ptrmanance, with two other secret societies composed each of about fifty er sixty wen, who would proceed to the Buis de Boulognn and to to the Hippodrome to strike tho blow. On the 7th, in effect, those men present ed theinselvos at the stations assigned them, nut the chiefs ofthe organization had omitted one trivial requirement—to give them arms. The conspirators iu the Buis de Boulogne saw Bonaparte pass, but find ing themselves totally unsupported, and having ouly three pistols to a dozen men, thoy let him pass with out making any attempt. At the Hippodrome it much the same, and at the Opera C omique the were ready but were still without weapons. The Queen of Portugal, whose sudden death is roport'Nl by telegraph, waa but thirty-four veer* of r , having been born in April, 1819. She was ut tho age of Queen Victoria of England, who waa born iu May the same year. Queeu Maria II, (de Gloria) was the daughter of the Emperor Don Pedro, of Brazil, iu which coun try she wus born. On the invasion of Portugal by the French in 1808, the royal family of Portugal emigrated to Brazil, where the seat of government was established. They remained there until some time in 1881, when the disturbances in Portugal called King John and his family home. He left bis eldest son, the crown Prince Don Pedro, in charge of tho government of Brazil. After his departure, tho nrazilliuus revoltod, and ntadeau atieumt to establish independence. Don Pedro joined the Brazilians end threw off tho authority of his father, and refused to let in the troops sont from Portugal to suppress tho insurrection. In 1688 the two countries wero formally sepnrated, and Brazil became an empire with Don Pedro as Emperor. Un the death of John VI, King of Portugal, in 18-26, his sou, Don Miguel, usurped the throne, which was contested with him by Don Pedro, who claimed it for hia daughter Donne. Maria, abdica ting it for himself. A long civil contest ensued, but Don Miguel finally surrendered his pretension* to his niece, and quitted the kingdom iu 1834. Don Pedro also abdicated the Empire of Brazil in 1828, iu favor of •;?« son, the present Emperor, Don Pedro II, now 28 years of age, having been born in 1625. The mother of Queen Maria was an Aus trian princess. Tho second wife of Don Pedro, and mother of the young Emperor, was a Reauhnr- nais, daughter of the Viceroy Eugoue, aud grand daughter of the Empress Josephine. The Queen of Portugul has been iwico married.— Tho fira husband wus Augustus, Duke of Leuch- tnnhorg, Beauharnais, still nnothor member ofthe lucky familyof Renuharuuis; being graud-son of Eugono. He was married in January, 1836, and died on the 28th of the next March. Iler second husband who survives her, is Ferdinand Augurtus, one of the still more lucky fnmily of the Coburg, Duke of Ssxe-Coburg-Gotha, nephew of King Leo pold, of Bolgium, and Coutio of Queeu Victoria, as well as of Prince Albort. Tho heir of Portugal is Don Pedro, Prince Royal | = ^ L The Boston Journal of Thursday toys;— Paper of unexceptional character passes at 10 por cei.-t. without much trouble, und the money market in all its material features is decidedly more favora ble for borrowers. Modesty in a Police Ofkickk.—At tho time tho officers were searching the house of Squires, tho New Hampshire railroad robber, after his recent •cape, ho was securely hid in a straw bed, beneath feather bed, on which his wife was lying. Tho modesty of tho officers prevented them from re quiring Mrs.8quiros to n~iso, aud so they wont it way without securing their prize. A Handsome Present.—Mr. Farrell, of the firm of John Higgins A Co., of Now York, has ar rived in this city. Ho iutondn to present to Mrs. Pierce, the wife of the Prosideut of the United States, n beautiful embroidered cnmbric handker chief, of Irish niuuufacturo.
