The ship Great Republic, which tu destroyed
by fire this mornlnf, wUs insured for $300,000, tbo
greatest portion of lira Insurance being in Now York
offices. Her cargo wee valued et $600,000; what
portion of this amount was insured i< unknown. The
ship Joseph Walker was insured for $90.000; very
little was insured|on the Red Rover. The White
Squall floated to the Nary Yard where she burned
to the waters edge. She was owned by William
Platt Si Sons, of Philadelphia.

The remains of tho late Capt. K. W. Pooler
were followod to their Ust resting placo in the now
cemetery, yesterday morning by a very large civic
and military procession, who, with our citizens

Guano.—As tho result of an investigation, re
cently made, the British Admiral on tbs Pacifie
station (Moresby) writes to bis government that
the total quautity of guano ou the Chiucha Islands,
Peru, et tbo present date, is ouly 8,600,000 tons ; ntid
that, at tbo present rate of exportation, it will be
oxbausted, i.e. so much of it as would pay freight,
in eight or nine years. The outer Lobos Islands,
whither Mr. Uensou’s vessels wore soul to load, will
doubtless be opened to commerce, when the supply
at the Cbincbn Islands is exhausted.

Monument to Wbbstee.—Tbo New England
Society had a meetiug at the Actor House, New
York, ou Thursday, to talk over raising money to
build a monument to Wefcvter. Some of the geu-
tlemon (among them Mr. Fessenden) bitterly op.
posed the movement, ou the ground of Mr. Web
ster’s advocacy of the compromise measures. How-
evor, a committee was appointed to lake up sub
scription*.
Over One Hundred nnd Fifty Liven Lour.
The London Times, of the 7th of Dec., gives tho
following dolsils of an awful catastrophe :
Tim fearful catastrophe which befell the Hull and
Hamburg screw steamer Marshall, and the lamenta
ble foie of every one on board—numbering, it is
supposed uo fewer than 150 souls, without one be
ing spared to tell the tale of her loss—has excited a
most painful amount of interest at Lloyds. In thu
absence of all positivs information there is little
doubt that she foundered very shortly nfier coming
iu contact with the homeward-bound bark Wood-
bridge.
The subjoined declaration of Captain Gaftreos, the
master of that vessel, taken on oath by tbo Admiralty
Receiver of Droits at Hull, and which has hoen for
warded to Captain Halstead, the Secretary nt
Idoyds, will be found to eontain all that is known of
the facts attending the destruction of tbo ill-futod
steamer:
Hailed front Stockholm on the 34th of November
Iasi, for Hell, with a cargo of iron, (mans nud deals,
passing Elsimorn on the 15th, having very heavy
woaihor, the ship laboring and straining very much,
aud flipping a groat dual of waler, the pump*
being constantly attended to. Wo sighted Flam-
brough Head light on the night of the 37th, distant
four or five leagues, the wind still blowing hard
from the south-west. We proceeded without any
thing particularly occurring until Monday, tho 28th.
At about 10 o’clock at night, r’lunoiflhn Newsumi
floating light, at the mouth of the Humber, we were
run into by a steamer, name unknown, the Newsnml
light, as far as I can judge, was at the moment W.
8. VV., distent three or four miles, our ship lining
on tho starboard Uck, lying ‘H. aud by E. half E.’
with the wind at the south-west blowing a fresh
breeze, nnd hazy ut intervals. We were all upon
duck ut the time, having a light ut our bowsprit, and
showing two flash lights over tho starboard side.
Tim moment we saw the stonmor approaching we
liuiled her, and said she would be into us, hut re
ceived no answer. Wo continued our course, with
tiio exception of varying half » poiut to the east
ward, 1m I hiving the ateatntir’s head to be to dm
noth, and that by that means ahe would Itavo gone
clear of our vossel, nnd it being so exces»iv<-

as the steamer would have run into our ports amid

Notwithstanding the precautions we took, and the
endaavers of myself aud crow to make those iu
charge of the steamer hour, tho steamer ported her
helm ami ran into us un the starboard side, striking
between tbo branch hooks, thereby starting dm
slitp’sstern, breaking several plunks in tho bow aud
tho foreoastle floor, besides starting die bows at both
sides, and odierwiso shaking tier very much. Her
jtbbooin, jibs, forotopgallauf tnait, nnd all tho rig
ging relating thereto, were all carried away,(and the
vessel was quite unmanageable. Immediately after
the accident 1 hailed the steamer, uml begged of
thorn toatay by us, as I was apprehensive tho ship
would go down, ns she was heavily laden. I receiv
ed u reply from the steamer, siatiug they would do
so. The stuninur, 011 getting clear from our wvfcck
got round iuto my starboard quarter, nnd in u very

running into the starboard sido of our stern carrying

die whoel standard, and otherwise cutting the ship
nearly down to the water's odge. Before this se
cond collision 1 hailed the persons on board the
steamer to revor*e her engines, but received no
answer. It was almost immediately ufterwurds the*
the accident followed. I ugaiu begged they would
not leave us, as I expected nothing but that tho
sul would gu dowu. 1 received, however no answer,
and tho itulaui the steamer got clear, she bore away
ill a southerly direction. One of my apprentice!
named Robert Burns, fell through tboaporturc mud*
by the steamer's stem iu oursleru, and was uofortu
natoly drowned, although every attempt wus 111 ad 1
to save Idm. Tho night was extremely dark and
hazy, aud the wind was increasing from southwest
lo south lo h gale. The steamer remained in sight
Imtafaw minutes. 1 was unable to get n sight of
her afterwards. On both occaniona when she run in
to us 1 enquired (several times for her uame, but
received 110 answer. She was u screw steamer with
painted ports and a bust head figure head. Our ves
sel was totally disublod. I cut away the wrock be
fore the bows, some bunds attending lo the pumps.

anchor, uud fotty-ilve fathoms 011 the first bower,
the wind blowing u'benvy gale. It was theu about
3 o'clock in the morning. In the iuterim 1 gotthrue
boats overboard in order iliat I might lighten the
ship and havo them in caso of her going down,
which I fully anticipated, there Going a heavy sea
running aud tho vostol making considerable water.
Iu geiliug the boats overboard the skiff got stove
aud went adrift; we attempted to gut iuto the boats
for the purpose of plugging up tho hole in the stern
whore the water was flowing in, but the sea prevent-
1 thou caused all tbo sparo sail to be thrust
into tbo apurturu from below, us far as was practi
cable, aud then umlor-drow a new lower studding
sail double under the quarter, as the ouly chuttco of
lopping tbo leak, which we fortuuately partly sue-
ended ill doing. I then unbuttoned tho hatches
and looseuod the iron, that 1 might be prepared if
occasion required, to throw it overboard, so as to
ightoii her. At 10.30 A. M., having a su-iikI fora
pilot hoisted, a fishing smack named the Adventure,
of Loudou, came to my assistance, nnd the muster
of it coming on board, I agreed with him to stop by
mo till the gale was over ftir the sum of £40, aud
thon go to Grimsby for a couple of steam tugs to
low tin: vessol up to Hull. As soon as the gulo de
creased the smack lo(i» and on tho steumer urriving
tho ship was taken iu tow and wo arrived at Hull
about one o’clock ou the following duy.

Hopes were entertained that some of the unhap
py creatures might have docn picked up by the
coasters, which almost hourly pursuo the track
here the steamer went dowu, but the time that
has intervened since her loss, without any such
gratifying intelligence being received, loaves little
doubt but that tho wholo must liavo perished.

girls who took lodgings ou Friday night ...
the Merrimack House, were found dead in their beds
Saturday luoruing. They were girls of good ad
dress and appearance, and were uuknown to Mr.
Drake, the landlord, or bis clerk. Ou iuquiry they
were found to be Elizabeth Burnham, alias Bradley,
aged twenty years, aud Anuuliuo Sampler, aged
nineteen. The facts 111 the case wo learn are us fol
lows >
Ou Wednesday evening the girls called at the of
fice of the clerk, and stated Hist they intended to at
tend the dance at Phuraix Hall that night, aud wished
to secure a lodging. They were accordingly directed
to a room, aud iu the morning stated that they wure
goiug away fur the day, but should probably want
return at night, and wished to take the koy of the
om, which wus granted. They did return
Thursday night, uud ou Friday morning, a woman,
the mother of the Sampler girl, called for them, nud
they came down, paid their bill, and, leuviug the
koy, departed. Ou this occasion Mr. Drako, the
landlord, saw them for the first lime, did not like
the appearance of the woman, and was ubout
some directions to Ids clerk in the matter, but fluking
that they had settled thoir bill mud were about leav
ing, retrained.
On Friday night, at ball-past tan o'clock, the bell
of the room rang, and the clerk not aware that the
room was occupied, answered the summons. To
his surprise the door wus opened by cue of (lie girls
who occupied the room tho night beforo, uud who he
did not kuow lud returned to the house. Shu staled
that they were cold and much chilled, aud wished
some hot peppermint. This was soul up, aud noth
ing more wus heard from them duriuf the night ex
cept by nue lodger in the house, wlio heard some
groan* from the room between two and three o'clock.
Ou euleriugfbe room iu the morning, the Sampler
girl wai found in bed, ou the pillow, apparently
having died quietly, aud without a struggle. The
other girl nppeured lo have attempted to rise, and
to have fallen in the net, with her head near the foot
of the bed, und her hands spread out over tho sido,
but iu an easy position. Tho tumbler was found ia
the room empty, uol smelling strougly of tho pep
permint. Two pairs of uew shoes, which they bud
purchased the day before, were ou the table. It ul*o
appears that they had purchased sumo articles of
dry goods the day before, but whether they were
the room or not we have nut learuod. Thera was
also some money found ou them, but nothing which
gave any explanation of the mutters.
The bodhs were taken to the Almshouse, aud
Coroner Cook callod an inquost upou thorn. The
stomachs were tukeu out and sealed up for chemical
examination, and the verdict will not probably be
rendered till after this has taken place.
We learn that there is 110 trace of poison apps/-
mu upou a superficial examination of tliostomarchs,
which would probably have been the case, if auy of

See. 9ih. That the Butchers shall. If required by
auy person or persons, w ith the approbation of the
Market Committee, divide their email meat as
follows: Evury calf, heifer, hog, goat or lamb, the
quarters thereof shall be divided into two parts, die
loin from the leg, or the breast from the quarters,
and the quarters of beef shall be cut up into pieces,
so as to suit the buyers. These regulations to
commence *t the opening of the Merket, and con
tinue to the hour before mentioned, and any person
or persons neglecting or refusing tu comply with the
term* of this soctioo, shall for every ntglsci or re
fusal, be fined ia arum not excecdingfilO, and every
person cutting up the meat shall, wear n long white
apron every day whilst abMarket.
Sec. 16th. That Council may at any time, by re
aotuiion, forbid and prevent atiy free person of color
or slave from selling or disposing of any articles of
food, or other articles usually sold at Market, for
auy offeuce committed by a free person of color or
slave, contrary to the laws of the State, or Ordinan
ces of t$n City, and no person of color haviug a
badge to .ell small wares, shall be permitted to pur
chase or sell any fruit whatever, at or in the vicini
ty of the Market before nino o'clock in the morning,
and in case of violation of this section of the Ordi
nance, by any such person of color, lie or she shall
.be fined in a stun not exceodiug thirty dollars, aud
the article so exposed to the sele shall be forfeited,
aud ns such seized by the Clerk of the Market, aud
no slave shall act as butcher, cut up meat, or sell the
same, unless iu the presence of the owner, employer,
or employees, or lii«, her, or their ageut, being u
white person. And if such slave dues set as butcher
cut up meat, nr sell, or offer the same fur sale, con
trary to the provi.ious of tills sectiou, bis owner or
owners, employer or employers, shall be fined iu a
sum nut exceeding thirty dollars.
Sec. 18. That no butcher, bringing ment of any
kiud to Alarkot, for sale at any of the Stolls, und
that no other person, bringing live stuck, or any
other species ol provisions to Market for side, ahull
be permitted, or allowed to keep any wagon, cart,
or any othor carriage, vehicle, horse, mule, uss or
ox, nearer to thu said market, or fur a longer time
titan tho Market Committee, or Clerk of the Mun-
ket may direct, ami such butcher or other perror
shall be compelled to draw up Ins, her, or their wa
gon, cart, or vehicle, iu such uiMunur, aud lit such
