There were in Ward’s Island and In the Mnrinc Ho/ipi- tul, last week, 1,407 persons. At this time last year the number was 1,053. Southern Cultivator.—The October number of this valuable journal has been received, and is fully up to its reputation us one of the best as well ns the cheapest ag ricultural and horticultural publications in the South. Fremont Electoral Ticket in Mary- Land.—We lenrn from the National Era, that an electoral ticket for the State of Ms- Tylnnd has been agreed upon by the Fro- mont men in that State, mid will be pub- lished in a lew days. Tho “ War” in Ksnsns seems to be about closing. The Missouri Republican stales tlmt tho “ Border Rufiiaus” will re tire from ihfc territory, and Gen. Orane, from Charleston, with cotton and wheat, one case of remit tent fever, seven days. Among the speakers announced to bn present nt a Fremont gathering nt Pitts burg, Pa., on Wednesday, was Charles Sumner, of Massachusetts, who, it would seem, has at length recovered from tho Cfleets of the assnult upon him by “Bully Brooks.” Poor Mr. Sumnp.r bus had a relapse.— The lucid interval which succeeded the gutta perclia treatment ofMr. Brooks hav ing passed, the rabid symptoms of his dis ease have manifested themselves, and he has again fallen to raving as bad as ever. When fnnatneism becomes chronic it re quires more than one “course of sprouts” to cflect a cure. jT&r* Bennett, of the New York Herald, is indignant at the insult offered to Gree ley by the Republican State Convention, held at Syracuse last week, which in the bal lot for candidate for Governor gave the Phi losopher only one vote, and nominated John A. Kino. Bennett says he won’t support Mr. Kino. He asserts that tho Herald and Tribune nominated Fremont, and that they and his friends were opposed to the Pathfinder until they were forced by populnr opinion to join in supporting him for the Presidency. Strange ! The Mails.—We received our Northern mail due on Sundny afternoon, yesterday afternoon, by way of Augusta. This has dispatch from advised to leave her and remain in the Thnddeus Hyatt, at Boston, saying that country, which she resolved to do, not- \ ladies of that city had made n thousand withstanding her own manifest attachment | suits of clothing to be sent to Knnas. A to her benefactress and her children. Tho girl besides having been well instructed in the more common branches of an Knglish education, had been tuught both Ftencli and Italian, under this beneficent core.— She had, moreover, been repeatedly assured that sho might consiJer herself as tree, whenever she could advantageously change her circumstnnccs. Yet the influence of numerous advisers hero lias prevailed, and she remains in n land of strangers, under the alarming conjurations of Italian imagi nations. A New Orleans lady lost a fa vorite domestic in the same way a f’e.v months since, and the poor creature, hav- dispatch was also received from Governor Reeder, requesting the chairman to stulo that the Kansas people were starving and almost destitute of clothing. After some remarks by the chairman. Mr. Warren, of Kansas, and Mr. Massy, of Cincinnati, a collection was taken up amounting to $900 lor general distribution in the shape of clothes and food, besides $tS0 in behalf of Mr. Warren. Later from Kansas.-— Columbia, Sept. 22.—We have telegraphic advices of the 20th from St. Louis, from which we learn that a light occurred on the 13th nodr Grasshopper Falls, between a hand of fifty ing thus deprived liorselt of early iisauciit- j So,iihroris, under Robinson, and n Northern tions, ai ,d a sitre stipiiorl,. lost her wns in ,| mt >vns ellga([ ed in plunder and in- va8ion. Ladles Furs. The fancy fur trade of this country, which centres in New York, is one of in creasing importance. By reference to the Custom House hooks, it appears that the total importations of “furs” this year, up to the present time, is not less than $1,928,- 000, while for the whole of last year the nmount was not quite $1,500,000. This represents the foreign cost of the goods, to which must be added freight and oilier charges, besides a duty of 20 per cent, lor dressed and 10 for undressed, except furs from the British American Provinces, free by the reciprocity treaty, which would in crease the valuation about 33 per cent. By far the larger portion of these nrc “ fancy,” or such ns are worn by ladies. We find 'olicn. t'lntttioru ft < 1 ft Hertz, }Y U Dickson. We are too glad to get our Northern mail at any time to find fault with its traveling through the State before it reuches us, ns is sometimes the case. PHILANTHROPIC, Another Nuob preparing to travel. Anothe r literary Fmglishman is about to visit us, and us a matter of course comotic- os a preparatory line of abuse of us and our affairs. It is wonderful how suddenly John Bull can jump at once into n perfect knowl edge of our internal affairs, and with what complacency he sets hinist If up to judge us. The correspondent of tho Journal of Commerce,in his let tor of Aug.25 f thus speaks of this inan.wlm, ns we are informed by the English papers, is soon to visit the United States, and who will doubtless he received with fawning adulation by the multitude who nrc always ready to fall down and worship anything that has an “European reputation.” You will remark umong the new Adver tisement of Longman & Co., of London, a five shilling volume entitled American Slavery. It comprises the rancorous article with the same title of the Edinburgh Re- iew, No. 206, a report of Mr. Sumner’s kindred speech, and a notice of the events which followed that speech. The journal called the Weekly London Newspaper is edited by Douglas Jerrold, one of tlie most populnr humorists or caricaturists. It is in• •redible how violent and bitter ho is with eterence to American affairs. In the number of yesterday, we have some para- rraphs from him, under the head of The Huflian ami his victim, relating to the Brooks and .Sumner ease: he describes Mr. Brooks us “the dastard who was at once the bully and the Representative of the accursed system of Shivery.” Health of Augusta. Mayor’s Office, City Hall,) Augusta, Sept.22, 1856. J To the Editor of the Chronicle, (f- Sentinel : Learning from undoubted authority, that it is currently repuried in upper Georgia that the Yellow Fever prevails in this city, deem it advisable to contradict raptly ; and do now say that there is in the city a single case of Yellow Fc- . nor hns tnero been, except one, which was brought from Charleston, and which passed through without stopping in the city. Tho Board of Hculth have pledged themselves to notify tho public should it occur here, and they may rest assured that it will be done. The city was never more death healthy than at present—not u single having occurred the past week. Very respectfully, &c., W. Evans, Mayor C. A., Jambs M. Dye, Chairman Board of Health. Gbq. [From tlie Jouraat of Commerce.] Kollaioun i'rltlclsin. Messrs. Editors:—The N. Y. Evangel ist, in its issue for the present week, closes an editorial review of Mrs. Beecher Stow’s new Anti-Slavery novel, “Dred,” with the following remarkable criticism: “The fault we find with the work is, not so much that a large tection of the Church of Christ is CARICATURED and MISREPRESENTED by a gular perversion of facts, as that Art hns been sacrificed to passion, and that the pre rogative of the poet has been made second ary to the zeal of the partisan.” That n minister of the gospel could deliberately assert that a “caricature” of the church of his master based upon absolute falsehood (and that, too, a church of his own name, the Presbyterian,) is less reprehensible than ,aV8: a breach of the requiiemeuts of Art (!) is significant of the effect of the doctrines of our modern reformers, even upon our reli- f pous teachers. We would commend to dm and to the authoress who sets herself up us the “accuser of her brethren,” the solemn words of Him whot* tobe the Judge: “Whoso shall offend one of these little ones who believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he was drowned in tho depth of the furs, will this year reach something like $1,375,000, which much exceeds the busi ness of any former year. The principal dealers throughout the country, except in the Eastern States, have laid in theirstoek9 for the winter, and uro busily engaged in mnking them up, preparatory to the open ing of tho retail trade next month. Tho Leal business is divided ns follows, as nearly as ean be calculated : Amou.it ef sales in Maiden Lane, exclusive of C. G. Gunther & Sons, (whose sales this year are about $500,000, but being principally to other local traders, should not all he in cluded) $300,000; ditto in Water street, over $450,000: in Broadway, $225,000.— There are at least ten firms that will do a business of $50,000, or upwurds; and five others that range from $20,000 to $50,000, their stocks being uncommonly large. The trude in hatters’ furs and buffalo robes is entirely distinct. The styles to he observed will not vary much from those oflust year; hut it is no ticed that American furs such ns the mink and opossum, will he used much more gen erally,—the great increase in the sale of fancy furs being of this description. The effect has been to enhance the value of American furs beyond precedent. Mink, which formerly commanded from 30 to 50 cents, is readily bought up by our furriers ut $3,50 to $4; ordinary Western, which was worth 25 to 30 cents, now brings $2, 50; other furs, too, are much dearer. Furs are now the fashion, and fashion is quite independent even of common sense. An example was afforded last winter: With the mercury down to zero and heavy far capes and cuffs in vogue, it was still fash ionable to wear open sleeveR measuring from two feet, to twenty-eight inches in circumference, through which the wind whistled ad libitum. Furriers formerly de sired cold weather, but this is a subject re specting which they uro now indifferent.— There are low priced furs ns well ns high priced,—a set of coney, or colored rabbit, selling for $1,50; while “crown” or Rus sian sable sometimes reach $1,500. The latter are called crown sable, because they us well us the ermine, are chiefly monopo lised by the Russian government for the use of the roynl family und nobility. Not withstanding, a considerable number are annually brought to the Leipaic Fair by Jewish traders, who obtained them from exiles in the mountains of Siberia. Last spring and summer u very large quantity of choice furs were received here from the Russian American Company nt Sitka, who choose to make this a market, rather than encounter tho hazards of war by sending the in. to Europe. Wc yesterday saw a box of Russian sa ble, not more than three feet long, and of ordinary proportions, (of camphor, wqod which contained 400 small skins bearing the Real of the Russian government, valued at fourteen thousand dollars. Some ot the skins cost $51 or $52,each. The latter are almost black, and on that account bring fabulous prices. A lower grade, of inferior color, are worth $28 and some not morn than $16. These are commonly sold at n profit of 30 or 33 per cent. Sixteen or eighteen skins are required to make a full sized cape, so that the cost of a choice quality garment of this description would be about nine hundred dollars Adding the cost of making and the profit, such an article could not be procured for much less than fourteen hundred dollars. Hud son’s Bay sable cost this year about $25 per skin. It may be mentioned that our largo fur riers employ no other means to preserve their goods from insects, than heating and airing them every three or four weeks.— N. V. Jour. Commerce. the I. force under Her- und after two hours hard lighting and the loss of three .Southerners and twelve Northerners, an armistice was asked by Hcrvey, and agreed to for thirty days. Additional.—We have advices from Kansas to the 15th. on which day it is stated that 2,500 Missourians were at Franklin, preparing immediately to reduce that town, and that several skirmishes had taken place between the advanced guards of the two parties. The free-soil marauders under Hervoy, have been captured by tho United States dragoons. New Orleans, Sept. 22.—Tho sales of Cotton to-day wore 1,800bales, at unchanged prices. The reports from every direction indicate that considerably loss than an aver age crop may he expected. Sterling Exchange 9%. Cheap City Printing.—The newspaper proprietors of San Francisco must be a lib era! and patriotic set. The city printing having been let out to the lowest bidder, the Town Talk sent in its proposal to do all the city printing for three months for one dollar. The Daily Globe offered to do all the city printing for three months for twen- ty-fivo cents. The Common Council, de sirous of giving each of the journals a share of the city pap, divided it between them.— This action of the Common Council 4he (Rohe bitterly complained of. It thinks it ought to have had the whole job, when its proposal was seventy-five per cent, lower than its competitor.—True Delta. Frke-Sptt. Calico.—AVe have seen a specimen of Fi.mont and Dayton calico, from the Cocheco print works, which is quite unique. Running through one of the stripes are the words “Fremont—Day*on,” repeated indefinitely. The general effect is such, however, that they would hardly be noticed except upon a close examination.— Boston Journal. That’s the way they use our slave grown cotton. .
