as well to remind your readers of w hat our
Revolutionary fathers sutTered in “the limes

from an account of Washington's campaign in
New Jersey, during the memorable winter of
1779—'80, which will give an idea of the scar
city and hard living, and the “high prices” o!
that period.
“The principal encampment in the winter ‘
of 1779—’SO, was about lour miles Soul beast j
of Morristown. Dr. Thatcher, in his Militaryj

December, 1779, reached “this wilderness,where I
I am therefore of opinion that we shall be

On the 20i.li of the same month he writes :
“The wages ol teams are LJO ncr day and

That very spring Abiaham ('lark “shuddered
at the prospect,” when, “with a vigorous war
to prosecute, our money is reduced almost to

teeu ibousaud Bix hundred dollars ($13,000)j
This looks like a lurge aiiioiiniol inouc) i<
expended for a winter’s dancing, when so i
poor fellows were barefooted, naked uud s
lug within four miles ol Morristown, w
the assemblies were belli—for, says L'api. Wil
liam Till lie, “There was a path which led from
the Wickn House down lo the Jersey camp,
aud I have often seen that path uuiikcd with
blood, which had beeu squeezed from ihe crack
ed uud nuked feel ol some of our soldiers, » Ii »
had goue up to the house to ask an alius.” And
yet there was dancing at O’Hara’s tavern, and
thirleeu thousand six hundred doll irs were sub
scribed to puy the dancing muster and the tav
ern keeper! But what was the real value id
this subscription ? In the old newspapers ol
that day you will hud “one thousand t.'unimen -
la! dollars rewuid” oHerud lor ihe “i ecu very ol
my negro man T'ouy,” while iu the saiuu papei
auotber party proposes to give “thirty Span
ieh milled dollars iorthe recovery ol Ins mulat
lo lellow Jack ” The thirty silver doll irs were
worth us much as ihe thoiisuud Qout mental
dollars, und the eulire Mini subscribed lor the
dancing assembly was not worth more than
three hundred si ner dollars. “Forty paper did
luis,” says Sparks, “were worth only one m
specie.” Iu u memorial seut by the idlb-ers « I
tlie Jersey brigade to the Legislature, they say:
“Four mouths’ pay of a private will not pro
cure bin wre'ched 'tile and children u bu-bel ol
wneal. * * The pay of a colonel will not
purchase the. ouis lor his horse, nor will hG
whole day’s pay procure him a single diuner.”
The Justices of Morris county, N J., met in
the winter of 1779 aud established the lollow-
lug prices lor hay and gram, to take effect ou
the 1st ol December :
For hi»v, Ural quality, £100 per ton; second
quality, £30 per ton; thud quality, £oU per [

per uight, $3; corn per bushel, $ ;U. wheat p-1 i
bushel, $ r *d; rye per bushel, *-.*»; oais per,
bushel, $2U.
By pulling this price current and the sub- j
scripliou to tbe dauclug assembly alongside ol j
each other, the reader will be enabled to form j
some idea oi the ditliculiies which met Wash- I
ington in his efforts to keep IS,000 or 20 000
meu together aud to encourage them to per-j
severe in the conflict with the mother eountiy.
