NAPOLEON'S MEMOIRS.
It was quite natural to conjecture ma
ny things but the reality, respecting the
Memoirs of Napoleon, by himself. For
instance one will expect him to rail bit
terly, ami unceasingly, at the powers
who reduced him to his present conditi
on, and to complain as vehemently of his
treatment in St. Helena. We had upend
ed this volume with eager expectation to
find Inin unravelling the plot, and the
circumstances which conspireddo his as-
tonishing though short lived success in
1015—since the annunciation ofthis, the
ninth book, informed us that it comprised
the events of the period between his em
barkation from Elba, to his defeat at Wa
terloo. But nothing is farther from his
dispositions. The first chapter is head
ed, ‘The Bourbons are driven from
France and he relates the bold ro
mantic adventure in almost as many
words ns the leagues he strided over, in
liis unexampled march to the capital of
Trance—Thus :—
* Napoleon departed from (lie island of
■Elba on the f?6tli of February, 1815, at
nine o’clock in the evening, lie em
barked on board the sloop of war lncon-
atant, which, during the whole passage,
displayed a white (lag bespangled with
bees. On the 1st of March, at 5 o’clock
in the afternoon, he disembarked on the
shores of the bay of Juan near Cannes
His small army assumed the tricolored
cockade. It consisted of 1,100 men, the
greater part soldiers of the old guard.—
On the second, he inarched through
Grasse, and at 9 o’clock arrived at Ser
non, having that day traversed twenty
leagues. On the third he passed the
night at Barreme. On the fourth, his
advanced guard, commanded hy General
Cambronne, took possession of the forti
fied place of Sisteron. On the fifth, he
entered Cap : the seventh, at 2 o’clock
in the afternoon, on the heights, in ad
vance of Vizilla, he fell in with the ad
vance guard of the garrison of Grenoble,
marching against him. He went to meet
them alone, harangued them, made them
mount the tricolored colors, placed him
self at their head, and at eleven o’clock
at night entered Grenoble, having in six
days passed over eighty leagues of a ve
ry difficult mountainous country. This
is the greatest march recorded in his
tory. 1
‘He remained at Grenoble on the’8th,
»n,l left it un the 9th at the head of 8000
troops of the line, and thirty pieces of
cannon : and at nine in the evening he
entered Lyons, the second town in
France. Count Defargues, Mayor of the
city, presented him the keys thereof.—
The Count d’Artois, the Duke of Or
leans, and Marshal Duke of Tarentchad
alone left the place at ten in the morn
ing. Their unexpected arrival at the
Thuilleries threw the court into the ut
most consternation. At length on the
20»h of March, the birth day of his son,
at eight in the evening, the Emperor en
tered Paris. Forty thousand troops of
the line of every description, success
ively arranged themselves under his
■tandards. 1 he following day the small
army of Elba arrived, having in twenty
days performed a march of 240 leagues.
He is too vain to acknowledge any de
pendence upon a traitorous conspiracy
for his success, but constantly holds out
the idea that all France desired his re
turn—he had only to show himself, and
raise his eagles for the nation to rally a-
round him. Lilt whatever enthusiasm
his presence may have excited, history
«vill imi attribute his success altogether
to his personal attributes. A conspiracy
had been formed months previous to his
sailing from Elba. The heads aTe only
suspected, since it was not thought politic
to investigate tho plot; the circumstances
which did transpire, show that it was
organized and mature* The violet was
worn even in Paris, imdwasthc symbol
of Napoleon’s return in the spring.—
When a Frenchman asked another “ ai-
mez voits la violette?” it was, are y
in the conspiracy : nnd if the person
whom he thus sounded was a conspira
tor, he answered “Eh bien! rile repnrai-
tra au printe us. ’* Indeed, Ferrand
who was minister under the Bourbons,
and entrusted with tbc genera! post of
fice declared he had read the whole pro
ject in letters which he broke open ; but
it is suspected that the cunning conspire
tors indicted these letters toputthe Bour

hons on a false scent, and contrived that
Fnrrand should be the dupe to lead them
into it.
His success—the alacrity with which
troops (locked to his eagles, and within
how short a time after he landed the tri-
coloured (lag was hoisted in most of the
provinces ofFrance—is mentioned, not
a« the result of premeditated concert, but
in his vaunting manner, as if upon know
ing that Napoleon was again in France,
the people rose spontaneously in favor
of their emperor ; and lie tells ns in con
tempt of the wisdom of Louis XVIII,
that the trotips ordered to he encamped
at Lyons, Ax. “ seemed as if stationed to
escort Napoleon.in his triumphant march
from the hay of St. Juan to Paris.” He
insists that-it was not contrived by Soult,
the minister of wwr, but that it was advi
sed hy the French Plenipotentiaries at
Vienna, and expressly ordered by the
king.
It would he nn idle speculation to en
quire whether the emperor might have
regained his throne without a previous
arrangement, and defection in sonic of
the Officers entrusted by the reigning
dynasty. A few loyal troops might.
have immolated his scanty band where lie
landed—hot no such troops were there,
On the other hand the history of the
French leaches us, that he needed hut
partial success to draw his old compan
ions in arms to his side ; and one brilliant
victory to establish his power again over
France.
