EY CKACE WEBSTER HINSDALE
Thou giv’st me but thy- cheek—a year ago
Thy glowing lip was pressed to mine; in
vain
I seek the fulness of thy love again!
No reason do I ask that I may know-
W hy coldly thus thou meet'st my kiss: I go
Front thy dear side, and leave thee free to
bless
One who may surer win thy fond caress.
I will not wait to check the richer flow
Thou couldst not lavish on my hungry heart,
Nor will I stay the jealous watch to keep
My love would prompt, if lingering where thou
art.
Give now thy best to one who dares to reap
Such golden field—forev.r more I part
My life from thine, that I, alone, may weep.
LIFE.
0 let the soul her slunrbeiS break,
Let thought be quickened, and awake :
Awake to see
How soon this life is past and gone,
And death comes softly stealing on,
IIow silently!
Swiftly our pleasure glide away,
Our heaits recall the distant day
With many sighs;
The moments that are speeding first
We heed not, but the past,—the past,—
Mui tJ JTT j BO I - —
Onward its course the present keeps,
Onward the constant current sweeps,
Till life is done;
And, did we judge of time aright,
The past and futuie in their flight
Would be as one.
Let no one f <ndly dream again,
That Hope and all her shadowy train
Will not decay;
Fleeting' as were the dreams of oid,
Remembered like a tale that’s told,
They pass away.
Our lives are rivers, gliding free
othat unfathomed, boundless sea,
The silent grave !
Thither all earthly pomp and boast
Roll, to be swallowed up and lost
In one dark wave.
Thither the mighty torrents stray,
Thither the brook pursues its way,
And tinkling rill.
There all are equal. Side by side
1 he poor man and the son of pride
Lie. calm and still.

1 not here invoke the throng
Of orators and sons of song,
deathless few;
Fiction entices and deceives,
And, sprinkled o’er her fragrant leaves,
Lies poisonous dew.
To One alone my thoughts arise,
he Eternal Truth,—the Good an Wise,—*
o Him 1 cry,
Who shared on earth our common lot,
But the world comprehended not
His deity.
This w r J is but the rugged road
Whic 1 tends us to the bright abjdo
Of peace above;
So let us choose that narrow way,
Which loads no traveller's foot astray
Fiom realms of love.
Our cradle is the starting-place,
In life we run the onward .race,
And reach the goal;
When, in the mansions of the blest,
Death leaves to it3 eternal rest
The weary sonI.
Did we but use it as we ought,
This world would school each wondering
thought
To its high state.
aith wings the soul beyond the sky,
Up to that better world on high,
For which we wait.
Yes,—the glad messenger of love,
To guide us to our home above,
The Saviour came ;
Born amid mortal cares and fears,
lie suffered iu this vale of tears
A death of shame.
Behold of what delusive worth
The bubbles we pursue on earth,
The shapes we chase,
Amid a world of treachery !
They vanish ere death shuts the eye,
And leave to trace.
Time steals them from us—chances strange,
Disastrous accidents, and change,
That come to all;
Even in the most exalted state,
Relentless sweeps the stroke o( fate ;
The strongest firil.
Tell me,—the charms that lovers seek
In the clear eye and blushing cheek,
The hues that play
O’er rosy lip and brow of snow,
When hoary age approaches slow
Ah, where are they ?
The cunning skill, the curious arts,
The glorious strength that youth imparts
In life’s first stage;
Tbc3e^sliall become a heavy weight,
When Time swings wide his outward gate
To weary age.
The noble blood ot Gothic name,
Heroes emblazoned high to fame,
In long array;
How, in the outward course of time,
The landmarks of that race sublime
Were swept away!
Some, the degrade slaves of lust,
Prostrate and trampled in the dust,
Shall rise no more ;
Others, by guilt and crime, maintain,
The scutcheon, that, without a stain,
Their fathers bore.
Wealth and the high estate of pride,
With what untimely speed they glide,
How soon depart!
Bid not the shadowy phantoms stay,
The.vassals of a mistress they,
Of tickle heart
These gilts in Fortune’s hands ;:r_ found,
Her swift revolving wheel turns round,
And they are gone !
No rest the inconstant goddess knows,
But changing, and without rep jse.
Still hurries on.
Even could the hand of avarice s:.vr
Its gilded baubles, till the grave
Reclaimed its prey,
Let none on such poor hopes rely;
Life, like an empty dream, Cits oy,
And where are they ?
Earthly desires and sensual lust
Are passions springing from the dust—
They fade and die ;
But, in the life beyond the tomb.
They seal the immortal spirit's doom
Eternally!
The pleasures and delights, which mask
In treacherous smiles life’s serious task,
What aie they, ail,
But the fleet coursers of the clia-e,
And death an ambush iu the race,
Wherein we fall ?
No foe, no dangerous pass, we heed,
Brook no delay,—but onward speed
With loosened rein;
And, when the fatal snare is near,
We strive to check our mad career,
But strive in vain.
Could we new charms to age hnpart,
And fashion with a cunning art
The human face.
As we can clothe the soul with light,
Aii-a Uo ginrious snirit bright.
With heavenly g r ace,—
How busily each passing hour
Should we exert that magic power.
What ardor show,
To deck the sensual slave of sin.
Yet leave the freeborn sou! within,
In weeds of woe.

Joshua Barnes.—A lady, who
was a great admirer of Joshua
Banns, the professor of Greek at
Cambridge, retpiesnd leave to settle
an hundred a year upon him, after
her death. 'Lite professor, however,
stranger. He paid her bills, assist
ed her to the cars, and accompanied
her to Buffalo.
At parting she requested his ad
dress. Two months later lids stran
ger was seated in his office at Alba
ny. A stranger entered, and, after
some conversation, presented the
doctor with a Government bond for
8500, as a reward for his kindness
to that old lady, saying : “Site was
my mother. She died a few days
after reaching me and I recovered.
Had it not been for your kindness
she would have died on ’.he road,
am her son who was sick. 1 am a
banker; but money can never repay
the debt I owe to you for your gen
erous kindness to my dear, good
mother. God bless you !”
May God bless and tlie world ap
plaud such noble acts of lx nevo-
lenee as Dr. T. D. Crothers, of Al
bany, bestowed on this occasion,
and which this old lady’s son so
richly rewarded.
Curious Custom.—The causes
for which a Mahometan woman may
demand a divorce are clearly and
broadly laid down in the Koran, and
her evidence is sufficient, because
the Mahometan law supposes that sr
woman must be violently aggrieved
before the modesty of her sex will
allow her to appear in public with
such application. So careful is this
law to spare her feelings, that she is
not even required to recount her in
juries, unless of her own free will;
all she has to do is place her slipper
reversed—that is, with the sole up
ward—before the cadi, and the case
is finished ; the divorce is granted
without further inquiry.
appy in her person, which was none
of the most engaging. The lady re
plied, that she “could ri fuse nothing
to Joshua, for whom the sun stood
still ;” and they were accordingly
soon after married.
Work.—“You don’t do work e-.
nough to earn your salary,’ 3 said the
head of a department in the Custom
House to one of his cleiks. “Work!”
exclaimed the young man ; “I work
ed hard enough to get here; surely
you don’t expect me to work now I

Low Spirits.—Exercise for the
body, occupation for the tnind, these
are the grand constituents ot health
and happiness, the cardinal points
upon which everything turns. Mo
lion seems to be a great preserving
principle of nature, to which ever
inanimate things are subject; for the
winds, waves, the earth itself, ar
restless, and the waving of trees
shrubs and flowers is known to he
an essential part of their economy
A fixed rule of taking several hours
exercise every day, if possible, i
the open air, if not under cover, will
be almost certain to secure one ex
emption from disease, as well a
from attacks of low spirits, or ennui
that monster who is ever waylaying
the rich and indolent. Low spirit
cannot exist iu the stmosphere o!
bodily and mental activity.
Time for Peace.—The venera-
lc Dr. was through his long
ministry unequally yoked with a
■erv ill-tempered wile. In ihe fur
nace she tended so constantly, he
was, we doubt not, purified for the
Master’s use, and at the age of near
ly ninety passed to his rest. When,
a few months later, the death of his
widow was announced, an old pa-
pishooer expressed great regret, say-
ng, “he had hoped the doctor would
have h id lime f >r a little peace be
fore she followed him.

A curious instance of the effect of
nervous shock is to be seen in one
of the hospitals of Dresden, in the
case of a soldier who was found on
the field after the battle of St. Pri-
vat. He is not wounde 1, but is in
a stale of extreme prostration. He
sees nothing, feels nothing, and per
ceives no sound. The battle itas so
shaken his nerves that he has even
lost lhe power of speech entirely.—
There is another in the hospital at
Baulzon who presents much the
same appearance of insensibility;
but he moves his fingers about as if
