A Man Falls Forty Feel and Lodges
Over a Precipice of 1200 Feet.
On last Salurdaj 7 , between two
and three o’clock, Major John B.
Steward, who lives on his farm near
the north base of Stone Mountain,
thought he heard the voice of a man
in distress on the steep side of the
mountain. On looking up he saw
the head of a man, and saw him wav*
ing'his bands for succor. The man
called to Major Steward for a drink
of water, and said that he had but
little money but he would give it all
to be taken from the place where he
was. Major Steward asked him if
he was not hoaxing him ? The man
replied that he was in earnest. Maj.
Steward was a gallant wearer of the
gray and has a heart open to the cry
of the distressed. Cautioning the
man to keep quiet, he proceeded to
town at once and obtained assist
ance.
The news spread like wild fire
over town, and every heart ran out
in anguish for the condition of the
unfortunate one. Those who went
to the rescue made “quick time” to
get there. Men were stationed at
the base on the north side to signal
the party on the top at what point
to descend.
Securing the rope to a cedar tree
firmly imbedded between two mas
sive rocks, Col. J. T. Willingham
and F. P. Juhan made the perilous
descent to rescue the man. About
three hundred feet from the top of
the mountain they came to him. He
was lying in agulch, or water-course,
furrowed out of the rock by rains.
One foot was jammed in a crevice,
and the other bent under his body.
He was hugging the rock closely,
while one hand was grasped in the
strap on the collar of his coat. A
small tablet of rock, two or three
feet long and a foot or so wide, was
all that was between him and a fall
of some 1200 feet to the ground.
Had he moyed two or three feet, ei
ther to the right or left, he would
have been precipitated 1200 feet to
the bottom, and only a horrible mass
would have been found to tell the
tale.
He had Iain there from Friday
evening late until Saturday evening
about 5 o’clock, a period of nearly
24 hours. His anxieties and suffer
ings were intense, no doubt. His
feet were swollen, lacerated and
blistered by the hot rocks; the sun
poured upon him its fiercest rays,
causing the most excruciating thirst,
and producing almost entire blind
ness. Death seemed to stare him in
the face on all sides. Return, with
out friendly aid, he could not. He
was afraid to move either to the
right or left, or get up, for that terri
ble fall was beneath him. Without
succor, he must die a lingering, tor
turing death of thirst and starvation.
In adjusting the rope, several rocks
were in the way, and fearing that
the rope might dislodge them and
bring them down on the unfortu
nate man, they were removed and
thrown ofl in such a direction as not
to strike on the spot occupied by the
man. With a crashing noise they v
rolled to the brow of the precipice
on a line with him, and then plunged
down that terrific| distance, burying
themsel/es in the earth at the base.
Reaching the place, the rope was
tied around the man, and, assisted
by Col. J. Willingham, he was con
ducted to a place of safely, and Mr.
Willingham returned and assisted
Mr. Juhan to get back. Upon reach
ing the summit the rescued man was
so thirsty, that he would have emp
tied a bucket of water at one or two
draughts had he been suffered to do
so. He wa3 carried to Col. Wil
lingham’s store and cared for. Much
praise is due to Maj. Steward, Col.
Willingham and F. P. Juhan for
their priseworthy and humane ef
forts.
HOW THE MAN GOT THERE.
On Friday evening, the man al
luded to, reputed to be a Mr. Mc
Carty, of Villa Rica, Carroll county,
went on the top of Stone Mountain,
taking with him a bottle of whisky.
He drank rather freely, and, per
haps, was light headed. He started
down in search of the “Devil’s Cross
Roads,” and finding the descent was
becoming abrupt he pulled off his
boots, He had not gone far when
he recollects falling and scrambling.
His boots were found by Master
George Jones, with an empty bottle,
at the foot of a cedar tree, some one
hundred feet above where McCarty
was found. Hence it is supposed
that he fell and scrambled together
some forty or fifty feet. He recol
lects leaving his boots there. The
accident occurred about nightfall.—

Success in Life.
Benjamin Franklin attributed his
success as a public man, not to his
talents or his powers of speaking—
for these were but moderate—but to
his known integrity of character.
“Hence it was,” he says, “that 1
had so much weight with my fellow-
citizens. I was but a bad speaker,
never eloquent, subject to much hes
itation in my choice of words, hard
ly correct in language, and yet I
generally carried my point.” Char
acter creates confidence in men in
high station as well as in humble
life. It was said of the first Empe
ror Alexander of Russia, that his
personal character was equivalent to
a constitution. During the wars of
the Gironde, Montaigne was the on
ly man amongst the French gentry
pv •**«» wuawv/ gulua UUDdll CU j
and it was said of him that bis per
sonal character was worth more
to him than a regiment of horse.
That character is power, is true in a
much higher 3ense than that knowl
edge is power. Mind without heart,
intelligence without conduct, clever
ness without goodness, are powers
only for mischief. We may be in
structed or amused by them, but it
is sometimes as difficult to admire
them as it would be to admire the
dexterity of a pick-pocket or the
horsemanship of a highwayman.—
Truthfulness, integrity and good
ness—qualities that hang not on any
man’s breath—form the essence of
manly character, or, as one of our
old writers has it, “that in-bred loy
alty unto virtue which can serve her
without livery.” When Stephen of
Colonna-fell into the hands ot his
base assailants, and they asked him
in ^derision, “Where is now your
fortress f” “Here !” was his bold
reply, placing his hand upon his
heart. It is in misfortune that the
character ot the upright man shines
forth with the greatest lustre; and
when all else tails, he takes stand
upon his integrity and his courage.
A young Texan skinned a cow
that died of a cattle disease, became
inoculated with the virus, and died
of it himself.

is scarcely an individual upon the face of the earth
whose body is exempt from the presence of worms. If
is not upon the healthy elements of the body that
worms exist, but unon the diseased human, and slimy
