.Macon, April 5th 1860.
Late from Central and Smith America.
New York, Nov. 2.—The steamship North
ern Light has arrived from Aspinwall.
A difficulty arising out of a personal affair,
was pending at Panama, between the American
ami British naval forces stationed there.
Peru has rejected the American ultimatum,
relative to the demand for indemnity for the
seizure of American vessels and seamen. It was
probable that the American Minister would de
mand his passports and withdraw.
Direct Southern Trade.—The project of di
rect trade is conducted under the auspices of
the Cotton Planters' Association. They hare
sent agents to Europe, principally, it appears,
to Belgium, to awaken a general interest in the
project, and with a special invitation to that
manufacturing people to participate in the
Southern fair, to be held at Macon, Ga.. in Dfc»
cembcr next, by the exhibition at that time and
place, of their own manufactures, directly im
ported on the ground. The opportunity thus
afforded for mutual inspection of each others’
stock in trade, and for mutual exchange of opin
ions and sympathies, is to furnish the beginning
of the anticipated commercial intercourse be
tween the
admitted that.the spirit
tion, as thus for exhibi-
their President, Howell
*ntly moderate, candid and
tages to be gained from
success in the scheme are not exaggerated, nor
arc the difficulties to be encountered in its exe
cution covered up, hut clearly stated and dis
cussed. Such a_ spirit at the inception o( an
enterprise is the best surety of its success.—
And one can scarcely consider this subject bet
ter than to pass over it in very much the same
order as that followed by Mr. Cobb, and with
the same candid spirit.
First, then, the scheme is for direct trade
with the inhabitants of Belgium. Belgium is
selected, if we understand correctly, first, be
cause the Belgians are eminently a manufactur
ing people, and manufacturers of such goods as
the Southern people need, while they are con
sumers of the distinctive products of the South,
and especially Cotton; second, this channel of
trade is a new one.
The advantages to be derived are, to the Bel
gians, direct intercourse with their customers,
and therefore better prices for their raw mate
rial. To the South the advantages are of a sim
ilar kind.—Nl Y. World.

The Cotton Industry of England.—Late
statistics of British industrial enterprise show
that five millions of persons are supported in
England by cotton; that thirty million spindles
are employed in the production of the yarn ; and
that the capital absorbed exceeds §750,000,000.
Four-fifths of the cotton consumed in England
(80i),0 0,000 pounds) is American; 120,000,000
pounds came from other foreign countries, while
only 8 per cent. (80,00(J,000 pounds) are receiv
ed from British Colonies and Dependencies.
THE-PROMPT CLERK.
1 once knew a young man said an eminent
K rcaeher, whtvwis commencing life as a clerk.
ne day his employer said to him, “Now, to-
morrtrtv that cargo of cotton must be got out
and weighed and we must have a regular ac
count of.ifc” •
lie was a young man of energy. This was
the first time lie had been intrusted to super
intend the execution of this work ; he made
Ills arrangements over-night, spoke to the men
about their carts and horses,.and, resolved to
begin very carl}* in the morning, instructed all
the laborers to be there at half-past 4 o’clock.
So they set to work, and the thing was done;
and about ten or clove® o’clock iu the day his
employer came in and seeing mm seated in the
counting-house, looked very blank, supposing
that his commands had not been executed.
“I thought,” said he, “you were requested to
get out that cargo of cotton this morning.”
“It is all done,” replied the young clerk, “and
here is the account of it.”
He never looked behind him from that mo
ment—never-! His character was fixed, con
fidence was established. He was found to be
the man to. do the thing with promptness. He
yvt^jsoofi came to be the one that could not be
spiu'gd—he was as necessary to the firm as
' anyone Of the partners. He was a religious
man, and went through a life of great benevo
lence, and at his death was able to leave his
children an ample fortune.

EXERCISES IN ENGLISH.
The Field & Fireside copies from the New
York Albion the following samples of English
fnno a Portuguese work called a ‘‘Guide to
Conversation in Portuguese and English”:—
Take for example this little sentence, conclu
ding the preface, wherein the author sets forth
his own reasonable expcctationswith regard to
the success of the volume:
“We expect, then, who thelittlc book (for the
care what we rote him, and for her typographi
cal correction) that may be worth the accepta
tion of the studious persons, and especially of
the Youth, at which \vc dedicate him particular
ly- , ,
We might look forward to some remarkable
Dialogues after reading this, and accordingly we
have them. For instance :
“Do you study? Yes, sir, i attempts to trans
late of french by Portuguese. Do you knowal-
rcadv the principle grammars rules ? I am ap-
pleed my self at to learn its by heart.”
Wc quote now some horse-talk that is enough '
to excite a horse-laugh :
“Here is a horse who have a bail looks. Give
ini another ; i will not that. He not shall know
to march, he is pursy, he is foundered. Don’t
you are ashamed to give me a jade as like ? he
is undshned, he is with nails up ; it want to
lead to the farrier. He go limp, he is disable,
he is blind. That saddle shall hurt me. The
stirrups are too long, very shorts. Stretch out
the stirrups, shorten the stirrups. The saddles
girths are roted, what bat bridle ? Give me
my whip. Fasten the ploak-bag and my cloak.
Your pistols are its Toads f”
The anecdotes, however, constitute the most
diverting portion of the manual, if all that are
included in it are as perspicuous as the two we
subjoin. The old story of Dr. Franklin, and the
oysters for his horse, takes a new form here :
“A traveller, which a storm had benumb
of cold, he come in a field’s inn, and find it so
fill of companies that he cannot to approach of
the chimney. “What carry to the my horse a
oyster’s basket,” tell him to the host. “To your
horse cry out this. Do you think that he wake
eating them?” “Make what i command you,” re
ply the gentleman. At the words, all the assis
tants run to the stable, and our traveller he get
warm him self. “Gentleman,” tell the host
coming again, “i shall have it upon my head the
horse will not it So, take again the travel
ler, which was very warmed one’s then it must
that i eat them.”
Joe Miller himself would hardly recognize
this second anecdote, could he come back to
read it, familiar to him as it was of old:
“Two friends who from long they not were
seen meet one’s selves for hazard. “How do is
thou ? told one of the two. “No veiy well,”
told the other, and i am married frootn that i
saw thee.” Good news ! “Not quit, because i
had married with a bad woman.” So much
worse 1
“Not so much great deal worse; because her
dower was from two thousand lewis.” Well
l: that comfort. “Not absolutely; why i had em-
Joid this sum far to buy some muttons, which
to all deads of the rot.” That is indeed very
sorry ly’tNot so sorry, because the selling ofhere
hide have bring me above the price of the mut
tons.’ So you are indemnified ? “Not quit,
Because thy boom where I was deposed my
noney, finish to be consumed by the flames.”
Oh! here is evgtoat misfortune! “Not so mat
iff* 1 1 either, because my wile and mv house sire
