Dr. Strelec reflects on
upcoming retirement
“You cannof
compromise your
soul. When you
compromise your
soul, you become
ineffective.” —Dr.
John Strelec
By Rhonda Jones
AUGUSTA FOCUS Staff Writer
On Saturday, Jan. 7, Superin
tendent of Schools John P. Strelec
announced his plans to retire.
The announcement had been
preceded by speculation from
some Board members who were
eager to get a jump on finding a
replacement.
At the October School Board
meeting, District 8 trustee Mary
Oglesby had suggested that the
Board begin the search for his
replacement and ask Dr. Strelec
to stay on as interim. District 4
trustee Andrew Jefferson took
the position that the interim
should be the Assistant Superin
tendent, as the charter specified.
Dr. Strelec considered it inap
propriate that it even be dis
cussed before his announcement,
which would come in January
after the new Board members
were elected and had assumed
their positions. “I did not feel the
Olympic-Sized spending.
See article on page 16
outgoing Board members should
be making decisions that would
affect the new Board members,”
he maintains.
Now that he has revealed his
decision, Dr. Strelec says he
would not serve as interim if
asked. “I'm holding fast to that "
he says of his announcement. He
considers it unprofessional for
him to become involved, and will
not comment on the Board’s de
cision to conduct a national
search. He says it is “dangerous”
when Board members and ad
ministrators don’t understand
their roles, and that the choosing
of a Superintendent is the “most
important decision a Board mem
ber can make.”
Despite the announcement, Dr.
Strelec says he will “work just as
hard as [he’s] ever worked for
the next five months.”
After that, he says, he’s going
to “hang loose.”
“I've got a lot of catching up to
do with good reading ... good lei
sure reading.”
Then, he wants to become more
involved with committees and
church ... and with other priori
ties. “I think the most important
thing would be to enjoy my fam
ily,” he said.
When asked tocharacterize his
12 years as Superintendent, he
replied, “I think it's a matter
where I was able to establish a
climate ... where we could meet
the challenges that faced us ...”
His advises his successor to
rememberthat the students come
first, and says that she or he
must go with gut feelings. “You
cannot compromise your soul.
When you compromise your soul,
you become ineffective.”
