MODERNPrimitive
Webster’'s New World
Dictionary defines
“primitive” as “of or
existing in the
beginning or earliest
times or ages; original,”
or, in the context of
primitive art as,
“characteristic or
imitative of the earliest
ages.” And so the
description of Mary
Candelario as a
primitive artist is an
accurate one. Her work
has both a child-like
qualityof the ancients,
with bright colors and
elementary renderings,
and a timelessness of
subject and mood.

and in my father’s studio. The

My guessis, it’s silky and invit

curious enough to find out, go to
this month’s installment of the
Evening With the Author Series
at the Ergo Sum Gallery and
hear it read by the author, Paul
Sladky, who teaches at Augusta
College. Its title is “The Place I

But wait — there’s poetry too.
