The Paine College Lions split a
pair this weekend when Tigers
tried to invade the den. On the
ladies’ side, it was the Tigers of
Voorhees College that faulted to
the Lady Lions 66-43. Onthemen’s
side, Coach Spry’s Lions dropped
another game, losing 90-76 to the
Morehouse Tigers.
Defense was the name of the
game in the first half of Paine’s
game against Voorhees. Coach
Minniga’s Lady Lions held

resultingin only three shots made
out of the 31 attempted by
Voorhees. For the game Voorhees
would shoot 19 percent, the low
est field goal percentage shot
against Paine this year.
The wind was taken out of
Voorhees’ sails early as its super
star and leading scorer, Elenor
Jeter, injured her ankle on the
first play of the game as she drove
to the basket hard and landed on
the foot of a Paine player. Jeter
would make an effort to rebound

from her injury as she saw her
team down by as many as 17
points, but her pain was too se
vere and she sat the rest of the
game.
Leiah Young was the dominant
force in the middle for Paine as
she finished the game with dou
ble-double (digits), 28 points and
20 rebounds.
The win was a big one for Coach
Minniga. Although it was a non
conference game, it helped the
Lady Lions regain their confi
dence after several losses to con
ference foes.
they were defeated by the No. 1
team in the SIAC Conference,
Morehouse.
The inside game was the differ
ence. Productivity in the middle
has been Paine’s Achilles’ heel
throughout the year as Donald
Daniels and Leroy Grant share
the center position. Daniels and

Grant both lack the physical size
and presence that most centers
bring against Paine. Against
Morehouse, Daniels didn't score,
and Grant finished with 13 and 8
rebounds. In contrast,
Morehouse's center 6'10", Sarran
Marshall, finished with 26 points,
pulled down 13 rebounds, and was
sent to the line 16 times. Paine
was also out-rebounded 52-38.
Paine fell behind to Morehouse
early 14-3 as it couldn't establish
any kind of rhythm. At half time,
Paine was down 41-29 and shot a
dismal 32 percent from the field.
With sminutes left toplay, Paine
had dug itself into a 75-58 hole.
But guard Julian Parker put on
his hard hat and hit three 3-point
ers as Paine went on a 16-6 run
that closed the gap to 81-74.
Morehouse broke the press ap
plied by Paine and sealed the vic
tory 90-76.

Amplified team spirit
Charles Mathis showed unequalled team spirit by singing and
becoming an impromptu cheerleader to show support for
Paine at last weekend’s contest. It is with great pleasure that
we make Mr. Mathis the Augusta Focus Fan of the Week.
