Okay all you “nuthin’-to-do-in-
Disgusta” humbugs, picture this.
A sprawling building with ant
like social activity. Not like a
churchy old community center,
but a place where you can go and
be with people who are like you,
who like to do the things you like
to do, whatever that may be. A
meet-market sans noisy drunken
people, where you can hear lec
tures. relax with a cup (or five) of
coffee, have lunch, sit, read, feed
your own ego, hang out ... See
yourself in here anywhere?
On Friday, Nov. 24 Barnes &
Noble, Inc. (really big bookstore)
isinvadingthe CSRA with legions
of titles, what company represen
tatives call an “extensive choice
on everyimaginable subject.” And
what’s more, they’ve been watch
ing us, so there are sections on
things like golf.
“Booksellingisalocal business,”
said Steve Riggio, chief operating
officer of Barnes & Noble, Inc.
“Barnes & Noble operates under
the philosophy that each store is
unique to its community. While
some 50,000 titles are common to
all of our stores, the balance is
carefully crafted sothat each store
reflects the lifestyles and inter
estsofits customers. Before a store
opens, our buyers spend consider
able time studying the communi
ty and its local publishers and
authors. After the store opens, our
store manager has the responsi
bility to further adjust the selec
tion to meet customer needs.”
They’ll order stuff for you too.
Anything you want. “Our stores
handle an average of 500 special
orders per week, most delivered
within seven days,” said Mr.

more titles we stock, the more
titles people want.”
Not only that, but they have a
Discover Great New Writers pro

new titles each year. Example:
The Chess Garden by Brooks
Hansen, in which a medical vol

writes a series of letters home
about his adventures in an imag

letters his family and friends back

of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
Another example: High Fideli

a35-year-old Londonrecord-store
owner, and takes a look at the life
of a “single urban guy.” We get to
laugh at him as he finds himselfin
weird, uncomfortable situations.
GQ magazine calls it “As funny,

The Software Etc. department

The department will also stock a

of how-to videocassettes.
The Barnes & Noble in-store

well as cold drinks and “a variety
of reasonably priced gourmet

classic bistro setting.”

When Does Area Code 770 Go Into Effect? Area Code 770
was officially introduced on August 1, 1995. However, to
allow additional time to get used to the new area code, until
November 30, customers may dial either Area Code 404 or
770 for local and long distance calls to numbers in the new
770 area. Beginning December 1, only the new area
code can be used to complete calls to the
770 area. POLK

Why Add Another Area Code? Due to a sig- ol

services — such as fax machines, computer ~ §----oco
modems, cellular phones, pagers, and residential LuHEAR2
second lines — Atlanta is once again running out of tele
phone numbers.
How Does Adding A New Area Code Change The Way I
Call Around Town... And The Way People Call Me? First,
the new area code does not impact the expansion of the
Atlanta local calling area. The new area code does not affect your
tollfree calling area, either. However, there will be changes in
the way you dial local calls between the 404 and 770 areas.
Here are examples to show you the new dialing procedures:
* To call numbers within the same area code, you simply dial
the seven-digit telephone number as always.
* To call from the new 770 area code to the 404 area code,
you simply dial all 10 digits, for example, 404-351-XXXX.
* To call from Area Code 404 to Area Code 770, simply dial
all 10 digits, for example, 770-917-XXXX.
* Bell South customers who prefer to dial all calls within
the Metro Atlanta local calling area using 10 digits
(the area code and the telephone number) may do so.
NOTE: You should not dial a “0” or a “1” before dialing
the 10-digit telephone number.
Are You Ready?
If your area code is changing;
* notify those who call you%ong distance and from within
the 404 area,
* update printed materials that list your telephone number
— stationery, checks, business cards, advertising, etc.
« whether or not your area code is changing, you may need to
reprogram or replace your telecommunications equipment
to accommodate the new area code — speed calling lists, -

fax machines, cellular phones, PBXs, etc. Please note that
it may not be possible to program some telecommuni
cations equipment to recognize the new area code
formats which no longer contain a “0” or “1” as the
middle number. To determine if your PBX system rec
ognizes the new 770 area code, dial (770) 666-9999.
You should hear a message that your call has been
successfully completed. If you do not receive such a
message, you should contact your PBX vendor to
determine what changes may be necessary. Check
with your equipment vendor for more information.
« if your telephone is in the Metro Atlanta local dialing area
and you have an automatic dialer, a computer dialing
system or other programmable dialing equipment, take
note. Many of these systems automatically insert a “1”
when an area code and telephone number (10 digts)
are dialed. Consult with your equipment or software
vendor to ensure that your dialers will accommodate local
