Had it not been for an assas
sin’s bullet, the Rev. Martin Luth
er King Jr. could have celebrated
his 67th birthday Jan. 15.
In his absence though, numer
ous gatherings across the coun
try were held in honor of the
famed civil and human rights
leader.
Before a nearly standing-room
only audience of about 1,000 in
Augusta College’s Grover C.

terrecently, a well respected col
lege administrator shed light on
King who, because of his I Have
a Dream speech, is often type
cast as a dreamer.

dreamed of an America where
everyone would be treated hu
manely and equally. He dreamed
of an America that would give
each child his or her birthright to
equal opportunity. And yes, he
dreamed of an America where
people would be judged by the
content of their character, rath
er thanby the color of their skin,”
said Dr. Joseph H. Silver, assis
tant vice chancellor for Academ
ic Affairs in the University Sys
tem of Georgia.
Because they thought Mr. King
was too busy dreaming to make
his wishes a reality, those who
opposed King’s mission felt a false
sense of comfort, Mr. Silver said.
What they didn’t know, though,
was that this visionary was also
hard at work realizing his
dreams.

dreamer. He was a doer. Hewas

who understood that one reality
is worth more than a thousand
dreams,” Mr. Silver said.
I Have a Dream, referred to by
Mr. Silver as an “architectural
wonder,” was the blueprint for
King’s actions toward creating
human co-existence.
“Dr.King,inhisl Have a Dream
speech, methodically crafted one
that will stand the rains of rac
ism, withstand the coldness of
bigotry, and withstand the
storms of division.... In that
speech, Dr. King successfully

Church offers Fresh Start
First Presbyterian Church an
nounced today that it will offer a
divorce recovery seminar to help
persons cope with the experience
of separation and divorce. The
seminar, to be presented Janu
ary 26 - 27, is available to any
one, regardless of religious affil
iation.
The seminar, which will take
place on Friday evening and all
day Saturday, includes both for
mal presentations and small
group discussions. Topics to be
presented include “The Stages of
Divorce and Recovery,” “Begin
ning Again: Biblical Insights for
the Divorced,” and “Working
through Bitterness — Learning
to Forgive.”
In addition to these topics, par
ticipants may also choose to at
tend electives which will include

Special guest will be Pastor J. L.
