“Don’t get caught doing the
stufflusedtodo,” Mike said, and
commented that his instrument
was “fashionably out of tune.”
He had also lost his pick, which
Candy now spotted, and tried to
cxplain where it was, camou
flaged on the colorful floor. “I
thinkit’s trying toget tothe bar,”
Gavin said, and suggested they.
play “the ice-cream song.”
“I don’t know what the ice
cream song is,” Candy said.
“Rocky Road to Dublin.”
And sowentthe night: relaxed,
unpredictable. Fun.
There isn't a single piece they
do that I don’t like, but my per
sonal favorite is one called “Fire
in the Glen,” about a Scottish
[armer whose land has been
burned by the English army. The
images are sad and beautiful.
“There’s fire in the glen,” the
song goes, “but nofire in the eyes
ofaHighland man,” whose “kins
men are huddled along the
shoreside.”
“The losing side always has
the best songs,” Gavin said.
- “Ahh..” said Mike, after an
other, particularly touching
piece. “Nothing like a good ship
wreck.”
And it was time for another
round.
Bungle Rye also performs at
('entral Case, the Case Du Teau,
and the Highlander Inn across
the 13st Street bridge. They have
been participants in the Georgia
Renaissance Festival and are
hooked again for the spring. They
have playedatthe Aikenlibrary,
First Friday in Augusta, the
Augusta Arts Festival, and the
Morris Museum. They have also
played different Atlanta venues,
and appeared with the group
(C'astleKelly at Evening in Ire
land, the Augusta Scottish Her
itage Society,and Hopeland Gar
dens in Aiken. Before Bungle
Rye, the members had built up
cxtensive experience with other
Celtic bands.
In real life, Mike is a local at
torney, and the Winships own a
homebrewers’supply shop called
The Brewer’s Barrel.
