monthy meeting
The American Society for
Training and Development
(ASTD) Augusta Chapter will
hold its monthly meeting on
Monday, January 20. The topic
is “Developing the Developer -
Inner Growth, Burnout and Ho
listic Health.” The speakeris Dr.
Jesse F. Lewis, former Chief Psy
chologist of the Augusta Area
Mental Health Center. ASTD
will also present three Jewel
Lynch Scholarships to three lo
cal college students. ASTD will
meet at Shoney’s Inn on Wash
ington Road at Rt. 20 in Augus
ta. Social hour at 5:30 p.m.,

St. John Towers
Association names
1996 officers
A slate of 1996 officers for St.
John Towers Residents’ Associa
tion was installed in a ceremony
at that facility on Tuesday, Jan
uary 9, 1996, conducted by Dr.
Anita Bozardt, Associate Pastor,
St. John Methodist Church.
Installed in the ceremony were
incoming President Lamar
Rush; Vice-president. Joanne
Davis; Treasurer Virginia
McElmurray; and Secretary
Lisbeth Goldwire.
Mr. Rush moved up from Vice
president, a post he had held the
past twoyears; Ms. McElmurray
was installed as Treasurer for
the second consecutive year.
Ms. Davis and Ms. Goldwire
were recently elected to their
respective posts.
St. John Towers is the Augus
ta retirement facility of Atlanta
based Wesley Homes, sponsored
by the North Georgia Confer
ence of the United Methodist
Church.

Recently the Augusta VA Med
ical Center appealed to their
employees during a medical cen
ter-wide food drive to support
those less fortunate. As a result,
more than 2,100 pounds of non
perishable food was donated to
the Golden Harvest Food Bank.
The Food Bank has historically
lent support to veterans who are
in need.

Lou Rawls Parade of Stars
Telethon exceeds goal
The Lou Rawls Parade of Stars
Telethon, which benefits the 1995
Paine College-United Negro Col
lege Fund (UNCF) Joint Cam
paign, raised $31,200 on Janu
ary 6,1996, exceedingits $30,000
goal. Nationally, the telethon
generated over $12.5 million.
The telethon is the final
fundraising event for the 1995
Paine College-UNCF Joint Cam
paign, which generated $148,010
this year. The goal for 1995 was
$145,000. This year’s campaign
was chaired by Dr. Audsey Wood,
principal of Tobacco Road Ele
mentary School, and Mr. Patrick
Blanchard, President and CEO
of Georgia Bank & Trust Compa
ny:

was broadcast on WAGT TV 26
and simulcast on WFXA FOXIE
103. The hosts were TV 26 news
anchors Steve Parrett and
Cassandra Lawton, and Michael
Thurmond, a 1975 graduate of
Paine College who is the Direc
tor of the Division of Family and
Children Services for the state of
Georgia.
Paine College is a church-re
lated, four-year, residential, lib
eral arts college located in Au
gusta, GA. Its mission of provid
ing an education of high -quality
in a wholesome and nurturing
environment has not changed
since its founding in 1882. Paine
