The land of Oz
With honesty and determination, Oz Nesbitt makes a difference
By Rhonda Y. Maree
AUGUSTA FOCUS Staff Writer
Asachild playing in the parkin’
Sunset Homes in the 19705, for
Oz Nesbitt, the sight of policemen
chasing young men through the
project grounds was as common
as cars driving by. For the past 11
years, he has been doing the chas
ing as a deputy with the Augusta-
Richmond County Sheriffs De
partment. But not just for the
sake of catching a criminal; more
so to save a trouble-prone kid’s
life.
“Iwanttochasetheseguysdown
and say, ‘Hey man, you can do
better. You don’t have to sell the

it.’ I want them to see that there
arebetter ways,” said the 29-year
old T.W. Josey High School alum
nus and 1986 graduate ofthe Geor
gia Police Academy.
The recent recipient of the Au
gusta alumni chapter of the Kap
pa Alpha Psi fraternity’s Citizen
of the Year award, Mr. Nesbitt
decided long ago that growing up
in the projects wouldn’t prevent
him from having a productive,
honest life.
- “My drive and determination
came from looking around me and
deciding I wanted something bet
ter,” Mr. Nesbitt said with a seri
ousness that penetrated his wire
framed glasses. “I've had a lot of
doors slammed in my face. I've
heard a lot of no’s,” he said. But
negativity wouldn’t win.
The community-oriented frater
nity annually awards an individ
ual concerned about people’s wel
fare —especially that of youths —
who work selflessly to improve
conditions.
Asked how he felt when he
learned he was the chosen one,
Mr. Nesbitt said, “I was surprised.
I was overwhelmed by the sup
port from the community. I was
really honored to be recognized
with such an award from a frater
nity as vocal and visible as the
Kappas. These are people that see
and appreciate what you’re doing,
and they want to let you know.”
Although he takes pride in the
award, Mr. Nesbitt said the great-

est pleasure derived from his in
volvement is seeing the difference
he helps make and knowing that
children appreciate his guidance.
“When kids from the programs
call me from college or write me a
letterletting meknow how they’re
doing, that’s whenyou know you’ve
done some good,” he said.
And Mr. Nesbitt has been doing
a lot of good.
He grew up as an active mem
ber in Beulah Grove Baptist
Church, where he participated in
the Royal Ambassadors, anorga
nization offering spiritual guid
ancetoboys. Asaman, Mr. Nesbitt
now counsels boysin the program.
He helped develop the youth
group Positive Posse with former
Augusta Youth Center Director
Pat Jones.
In 1993, he helped start the
local chapter of Law Enforcement
Explorers. An extension of the
Boy Scouts, the program gives
13-to-21-year olds who areinter
ested in careers in law enforce
ment a close-up view of the pro
fession.
He is a member of 100 Black
Men, a mentor program for black
boys.
Mr. Nesbitt'smost recent project
is The Male Room. Founded in
1994, the Male Room’s mission is
to teach 7-to-14-year-old boys ed
ucational, social and economic
skills.
Inaddition to the high visibility
he has because of his heavy in
volvement with youths, Mr.
Nesbitt’s voice is also recognized
by many on Foxie 103’s morning
trafficreport, and he’s seen giving
traffic updates on WRDW TV 12’s
morning news show.
Those who don’t want to know
Mr. Nesbitt are the drunken driv
ers he picks up in the Sheriff's
Department DUI Task Force mo
bile testing unit. As a member of
the six-man team that specializes
in getting drunken drivers off the
road, Mr. Nesbitt drives the “jail
on wheels” on which he operates
an alcohol analyzer.
Equipped with a 10-person
holding cell to transport those
who fail the test to the county
jail, and a video camera to cap
ture subjects in their drunken
state, the black and gray vehicle
hasbeen operated by Mr. Nesbitt
for the past four years.
When he’s not working or vol
unteering his time to youths,
soon-to-be married Mr. Nesbitt
